For the least reuse of your Grok conversations, turn off both model-improvement data sharing and personalization, use Private Chat for sensitive sessions when it is available, protect your X posts if you do not want them used by Grok, and delete stored conversations. These are separate controls: disabling training does not automatically disable personalization, and deleting a chat is not an instant, unconditional erasure.
The four changes that matter most
- Disable model improvement. This stops your ordinary prompts, voice inputs, outputs and interactions from being used for training or fine-tuning under the applicable setting.
- Disable personalization separately. Personalization can use account or platform data to tailor Grok even when model-improvement sharing is off.
- Use Private Chat for conversations you want excluded from training. The option is available only in supported versions and locations.
- Delete existing history and review X post visibility. Deleting conversations starts a removal process; protecting X posts is a separate control from chat-history deletion.
The exact labels and menu paths depend on whether you use Grok on X, the Grok mobile app, or Grok.com. Follow the section for your platform rather than assuming one toggle controls every data use.

Why voice conversations need their own privacy check
Voice is still conversation data, even when you never type a message. X says voice input may be transcribed or translated and shared with xAI for personalization. The SpaceXSI privacy policy treats audio and voice as user content. A spoken message can therefore create several records or processing steps: the audio stream, a transcription, your prompt and the generated answer.

Turning off model improvement addresses one downstream use. It does not necessarily prevent the service from processing audio to provide the live answer, keeping a conversation in your history, or using permitted data for personalization. For minimum reuse, apply both the training and personalization controls, then use Private Chat for an additional conversation-level safeguard.

Voice 3.0’s performance claims do not change those choices. In 2026 product information, xAI describes latency of under one second and reports, from Artificial Analysis on October 13, 2026, a Speech-to-Speech Index score of 86.9, Full Duplex Bench performance of 97.0%, Task Completion Task Success Rate of 94.8%, and a τ-Voice score of 71.6%. Faster, more capable voice interaction can make a session feel like a phone call, but you should treat everything spoken as data subject to the settings and retention rules below.

Labels can change as apps are updated. If a menu is missing, look for the equivalent under Privacy, Data, Data Controls, or Grok settings rather than enabling a similarly named feature by mistake.
How to lock down Grok on X
1. Disable Data Sharing
- Open Settings and privacy in X.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Choose Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Switch off Data Sharing, whose description allows public data and interactions, inputs and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
This opt-out is intended to stop personal data about your interactions, inputs and results from being used to train or fine-tune Grok. X says you can continue using Grok after opting out. It does not promise that every model or feature connected to Grok stops learning from every form of use.

2. Disable Grok Personalization
Remain in Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators and turn off Grok Personalization. This is a different purpose from training. If your goal is to prevent X data from tailoring answers, turn it off even after Data Sharing is disabled.
3. Protect your X posts
- Go to Settings and privacy → Privacy & Safety.
- Open Audience and tagging.
- Enable Protect your posts.
Protected posts are a separate lever: X says this prevents those posts from being used to train underlying Grok or xAI models or from being surfaced in responses. This setting affects post visibility and model use; it does not erase old Grok conversations.
4. Delete X conversation history
- Open Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok.
- Choose Delete Conversation History and confirm.
X states that deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days unless they must be retained for security or legal reasons. That is a general removal window, not a guarantee that every copy disappears immediately or that retention exceptions never apply.

How to lock down Grok mobile and Grok.com
Mobile app
- Open Grok and enter Settings.
- Tap Data Controls.
- Switch off Improve the model.
- In the same data or privacy area, switch off Personalize Grok using X if you do not want X data used to personalize the service.
- For a sensitive session, start a new Private Chat before speaking or typing.
- Use the available history controls to delete one conversation, all conversations, or the account.
Grok.com
- Open Settings.
- Select Data.
- Switch off Improve the Model.
- Turn off Personalize Grok using X when that option is present.
- Choose Private Chat for conversations you want excluded from model training, where the feature is offered.
- Use the data page’s controls to delete individual chats, all conversations, or the account.
The mobile and web controls are conceptually the same, but their wording and placement can differ. Check the state of the toggle after saving; a page refresh or sign-out can reveal whether the change actually persisted.

What Private Chat does—and what it does not erase
The SpaceXSI consumer FAQ says that, when available, content and interactions in Private Chat are not used for model training. Use it before you begin the conversation; switching modes after sharing sensitive information cannot retract what was already sent.
Private Chat is not a promise of instant deletion from every operational system. The SpaceXSI policy says deleted or Private Chat conversations are generally removed within 30 days, subject to exceptions. Data may be retained when needed for safety, security or legal reasons, or kept in de-identified or pseudonymized form after being disassociated from you. A conversation can therefore be excluded from training while still being processed temporarily for service operation, abuse prevention or compliance.

Do not treat the private label as permission to disclose secrets. X explicitly advises users not to share personal, sensitive or confidential information with Grok.

Opting out of model improvement does not cover every voluntary signal. X says thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may be used for training even after you opt out. SpaceXSI gives a similar warning for feedback supplied after opting out. If you want the smallest possible data trail, avoid sending feedback that contains sensitive details and do not include confidential material in the feedback text.
X also notes that deployed features powered by Grok can learn from normal use. In practical terms, the opt-out is a control over specified training and fine-tuning uses of your personal interaction data; it is not a guarantee that no system connected to a live product ever adapts from aggregate or operational signals.
Deletion, retention and account closure
What deletion starts
Deleting a single chat removes it from your visible history and starts the provider’s deletion workflow. Deleting all conversations applies the same request at account level. Account deletion is broader, but it does not override records that must be retained for legal, security or safety reasons.
The 30-day rule and its limits
X documents removal of deleted conversation history within 30 days, with security and legal exceptions. SpaceXSI uses the same general period for deleted or Private Chat conversations and adds de-identification and pseudonymization exceptions. During that period, the service may still hold data needed to complete deletion, investigate abuse, preserve evidence or meet an obligation.
What to do before deleting
- Export or copy anything you genuinely need; deletion may be irreversible.
- Remove sensitive text from the conversation itself before submitting feedback.
- Check every device and sign-in method you use, because X, mobile Grok and Grok.com can expose different histories.
- After deletion, sign out and back in to confirm the conversation no longer appears in history.
A practical privacy setup for common situations

Verification checklist after changing settings
- Reopen the settings page and confirm the model-improvement toggle is visibly off.
- Confirm the separate personalization toggle is also off if minimum reuse is your goal.
- On X, verify whether Protect your posts is enabled under Audience and tagging.
- Start a new Private Chat and check for the private indicator before speaking.
- Delete old conversations from the platform where they were created; do not assume an X chat and a Grok.com chat share one deletion control.
- Do not send thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback containing confidential information.
- Review permissions for microphone access and revoke them when you are finished using voice.

For a privacy-first Grok Voice 3.0 setup, disable model improvement and personalization, use Private Chat before sensitive conversations, protect X posts when appropriate, and delete existing history.
