If an AI agent deleted a file, stop the agent and pause any desktop sync first. Then identify where the file lived, check the computer’s Recycle Bin or Trash, check the storage service’s deleted-items area, use version history if the file was overwritten rather than removed, and finally restore from an independent backup. Recovery is controlled by the storage service, account type, permissions and retention period—not by a universal AI-agent undo command.
The recovery order that minimizes further loss
Do these checks in order. The first steps preserve whatever copy may still exist; the later steps handle provider-specific recovery.

1. Stop the agent and freeze synchronization
Terminate the AI agent or revoke the task that is still running. If a desktop client is synchronizing the affected folder, pause or disconnect it before restoring anything. Continuing synchronization can propagate a deletion, an empty replacement file or damaged content to other devices. Google’s ransomware-recovery guidance specifically recommends signing out of Drive for desktop so encrypted or damaged files cannot overwrite recoverable versions.
2. Establish what happened
Find the original path and determine whether the file was deleted, moved, renamed or overwritten. A file that still exists with the wrong contents is a version-history case. A file absent from its folder is a deleted-items case. A moved file may be recoverable simply by searching the account, while a renamed file can often be found by its extension or recent-modification date.

3. Identify the storage location
Record whether the source was a local Windows or macOS disk, a synchronized folder, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or a separate backup. The same AI action has different recovery rules in each location. An online-only file, for example, will not be present in the computer’s local trash.
4. Work from the least destructive copy
Do not empty a trash folder, run a cleanup utility or let the agent resume while you investigate. First inspect local trash, then the provider’s deleted-items view, then version history and finally an independent backup. When a provider offers a restore command, restore to the original location only after synchronization is paused and verify the result before reconnecting devices.
Choose the correct recovery route
| Where the file lived | What happened | First recovery location | Retention or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Windows disk or synchronized folder | Deleted | Windows Recycle Bin | Depends on whether the bin was emptied and local system settings |
| Local macOS disk or synchronized folder | Deleted | Mac Trash | Depends on whether Trash was emptied |
| OneDrive | Deleted | Web Recycle Bin, after checking local trash for synchronized content | Personal accounts generally 30 days; work or school accounts generally 93 days, subject to administrator settings |
| Google Drive | Deleted or damaged by a sync event | Drive’s deleted-items area and Google’s restoration workflow | Restoration options depend on the account and the available revision window |
| Google Drive | Overwritten or changed | Restore file versions | Google says Drive keeps the last 25 days of revisions |
| Dropbox | Overwritten or changed | Version history | Depends on plan, elapsed time and permissions |
| Dropbox Backup | Deleted | Restore a recently deleted Backup folder from the source computer or external hard drive | Available only while Dropbox’s applicable recovery period and access rights allow it |
| Any service after its recovery window | Deleted | Independent backup, such as a separately stored external hard drive | Works only if a usable copy was made before the deletion |
Check the computer’s Recycle Bin or Trash
For a file that was in a synchronized folder, look locally before using the cloud interface. OneDrive’s documented workflow says a deletion from a synced folder may appear in the Windows Recycle Bin or Mac Trash. A cloud-only item does not download to the computer, so it will not appear there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows
- Open Recycle Bin from the desktop or Start menu.
- Sort by deletion date, original location or file type, then search for the name and any likely renamed copy.
- Right-click the correct item and choose Restore. Windows returns it to its original folder.
- Open the restored file while synchronization is still paused and confirm its contents, size and modification date.
macOS
- Open Trash from the Dock.
- Use Finder search or sort by date added to locate the item.
- Control-click it and choose Put Back.
- Verify the file in its original folder before allowing a sync client to reconnect.
If the local bin is empty, do not assume the file is gone. Continue with the storage service’s deleted-items view and any backup.
Recover a deleted OneDrive file
OneDrive AI agents are stored as ordinary .agent files in OneDrive. Microsoft documents that they can be renamed, moved or deleted like other files, so normal OneDrive recycle-bin and version-history rules apply.

Use the web Recycle Bin
- Pause or disconnect OneDrive on computers that contain the affected folder.
- Open OneDrive on the web and select Recycle Bin.
- Search by file name, path, deletion date or file type. Select the item.
- Choose Restore, then check the original folder and open the file.
- Reconnect synchronization only after confirming that the restored copy is correct.
Personal OneDrive accounts generally retain deleted items for 30 days. Work and school accounts generally retain them for 93 days, but an administrator can change that policy. Treat those periods as service defaults, not guarantees for every tenant.
Use OneDrive version history
Version history is appropriate when the file still exists but the AI agent replaced its contents, saved an earlier draft over it or made unwanted edits. Open the file’s version-history command in OneDrive, select a timestamp from before the agent’s action and restore that version. Microsoft 365 subscribers can also use OneDrive’s option to restore the entire OneDrive to an earlier point, which is useful when many files were changed in one incident; review the proposed changes carefully before applying a broad rollback.

Microsoft Support states: “You can’t restore files or folders after they’ve been permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin.” If the item has been permanently removed, the documented recycle-bin process will not bring it back. A separate backup or an administrator-managed recovery facility is then the relevant path.
Recover files in Google Drive
Google Drive recovery has two different jobs: retrieving a removed file and rolling back content that still exists. Keep Drive for desktop signed out while investigating a suspected mass deletion or corruption event so a damaged local state cannot replace good cloud revisions.
Find a deleted item
- Stop the agent and sign out of Drive for desktop on affected computers.
- Open Google Drive in a browser and go to the deleted-items or Trash view.
- Search by name, owner, location and deletion date.
- Select the file and use Restore. Check the original folder and permissions after restoration.
- Inspect the restored file before signing Drive for desktop back in.
Roll back changed content
If the file remains in Drive but contains the wrong data, use Google’s Restore file versions tool. Google says Drive keeps the last 25 days of revisions. The tool can roll back multiple affected files, making it more suitable than opening each document individually after a broad agent error. Select a revision from before the incident, review the affected set and start the restore only after confirming that newer legitimate edits will not be lost.

When the revision window has passed
Once the available revisions have aged out, version history is no longer a dependable source. Search for exported copies, shared-folder duplicates or an independent backup. Google recommends regularly copying important files to another location precisely because cloud revision history is time-limited.

Return an existing file to an earlier state
Dropbox version history is designed for a file that still exists but needs to be returned to an earlier version. Open the file’s version-history control, choose a timestamp before the AI agent changed it and restore that version. The exact recovery period depends on the Dropbox plan, how much time has elapsed and your permissions, so an account may show fewer versions than another account.
Restore a deleted Dropbox Backup folder
Dropbox documents restoring recently deleted Dropbox Backup folders from the source computer or an external hard drive. Use that workflow when the missing material was part of Dropbox Backup rather than an ordinary synchronized Dropbox folder. Confirm that the source drive is connected and that you are signed in with the account that owns the backup.
Permanent deletion
Dropbox states: “If you selected Delete permanently to delete a file or folder, it cannot be recovered.” A permanently deleted item is outside the normal recovery process. Look for a separate backup, an exported copy or another authorized collaborator’s copy instead of repeatedly searching the Dropbox interface.
Deletion and overwrite require different tools
Deleted-item recovery looks for an object that the service has marked as removed but retained temporarily. Version history looks for earlier content attached to an object that still exists. Confusing the two wastes time: version history cannot restore a file that has disappeared from the account, while a recycle bin will not usually contain an earlier draft of a file that was merely overwritten.

Restore from an independent backup
A backup is independent only when it is not changed by the same synchronization event. A second folder inside the same continuously synced workspace is not a reliable fallback; an external hard drive or another separately maintained location is safer.
Use an external hard-drive copy
- Disconnect the affected sync client before connecting the backup drive.
- Locate the dated copy made before the agent’s deletion or overwrite.
- Copy the file to a new quarantine folder on the computer rather than immediately replacing the current cloud copy.
- Open the copy, verify its contents and scan it according to your organization’s security policy.
- After validation, place it in the intended working folder and let synchronization upload it as a deliberate new state.
Google recommends copying important files to another location, and Dropbox documents restoring recently deleted Dropbox Backup folders from a computer or external hard drive. These practices matter after cloud retention or version history has expired.
Check for multiple backup generations
If the backup drive contains dated snapshots, choose the newest snapshot that predates the incident but does not include the agent’s unwanted changes. Keep the original backup untouched until the restored file has been verified and opened successfully.

The agent is still running
Stop its process, cancel its queued task and remove write access temporarily if necessary. A successful restore can be undone within seconds if the same automation continues operating.
Sync resumes and removes the restored copy
Pause or sign out of the desktop client again. Restore from the web interface or a disconnected backup, verify the result, and reconnect one device at a time. Watch the sync activity rather than reconnecting every computer simultaneously.

The file is not in local trash
Determine whether it was cloud-only. Cloud-only content never had a local filesystem copy, so continue with the provider’s web deleted-items view.
The deleted-items view is empty
Check that you are using the correct account, workspace and owner identity. Managed work or school accounts can have administrator-controlled retention and permissions. Also search for a moved or renamed copy before concluding that the item was permanently deleted.
Restore is disabled
You may lack ownership or restore permission, the retention period may have expired, or the item may have been permanently deleted. Ask the workspace administrator to verify policy and ownership, then use an independent backup if the provider cannot restore it.

The restored file opens but is wrong
For an existing but damaged file, select an earlier version rather than repeatedly restoring the same current copy. Compare timestamps and file sizes, and preserve the first recovered copy in a separate folder while testing.
Prevent the next AI-agent deletion
- Keep important working files in a location with documented recycle-bin and version-history support.
- Maintain an independent backup on a separately stored external drive or other location.
- Use least-privilege access for agents: grant write access only to folders required for the task.
- Require confirmation before bulk deletes, moves, renames or overwrites.
- Record the agent’s task time and affected paths so you can choose the correct pre-incident version.
- Test a sample restore periodically; a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery plan.
- For managed accounts, ask the administrator how long deleted items and revisions are retained and whether policy differs from the provider’s default.
What the evidence establishes about AI-agent files
There is no single cross-platform AI-agent undo path documented for these services. Microsoft’s documentation treats OneDrive agent definitions as normal .agent files, while Google Drive and Dropbox apply their ordinary deleted-item and version-history mechanisms. The practical consequence is that you should investigate the storage layer first: identify the account, pause synchronization, and then use that service’s recovery controls.
Quick Recap
Final recovery checklist
- Stop the AI agent and pause desktop synchronization.
- Identify the original storage location and whether the item was deleted, moved, renamed or overwritten.
- Check Windows Recycle Bin or Mac Trash for synchronized content.
- Check the provider’s web deleted-items area.
- Use version history only when the file still exists with incorrect content.
- Check account type, permissions and retention policy.
- Restore from an independent backup when retention has expired or deletion was permanent.
- Verify the recovered file before reconnecting synchronization or allowing the agent to run again.
