The posted product receipt records goods received against a purchase order and moves its lines toward invoice processing. Microsoft documents the receiving workflow and integration concepts, but does not specify one universal X++ API or code sequence for every version and configuration.
What a GRN import must accomplish
In Dynamics 365, the corresponding business transaction is generally called a product receipt. Microsoft describes it as recording that ordered products have been received so the purchase order (PO) lines can be processed for invoicing. A successful integration therefore needs to complete the application’s receipt process; loading an import row alone does not establish that the goods were received. See Microsoft Learn’s Product receipt against purchase orders.

The inbound GRN should carry enough information to identify the correct PO and receipt details. Preserve the supplier’s packing-slip or product-receipt identifier: Microsoft says this reference is required for accounting and for checking the supplier packing slip against the goods received. The posted receipt journal is the record to review for receipt quantities and dates. See Record the receipt of goods on the purchase order.

Choose the receiving path before designing the import
The right path depends on how purchasing and warehousing are configured. A direct PO receipt and a warehouse-driven receipt are not interchangeable routes, and the quantities selected for posting can differ.
#1 Best Overall
| Receiving situation | What the import must account for |
|---|---|
| Direct receipt against the PO | The product receipt process can use ordered, receive-now, or registered quantities. Confirm which quantity the inbound GRN represents before posting. Microsoft Learn. |
| Warehouse registration or inbound-load flow | Registration may precede receipt posting; registered does not yet mean received. Load-originated and PO-originated posting can select different quantities. Product receipt posting requires a confirmed PO. Microsoft Learn. |
| Other configured handling | Check whether the process involves quality, batch or serial details, or license plates before selecting the integration route. The specific requirements depend on the target environment. |
Plan the X++ integration without assuming a universal API
Microsoft documents data entities as business-level abstractions for data exchange. The Data Management Framework uses source, staging, and target phases, and public entities can be available through OData V4. Those general integration capabilities do not establish that a particular product-receipt entity or posting API is available in every environment. Review Data entities overview and Data management and integration by using data entities overview.
Before implementing X++ code, confirm the target application version, enabled features, public entities, warehouse setup, customizations, and inbound message contract. Select the supported route for that environment: for example, a suitable public OData entity for an integration that needs that interface, or a Data Management Framework import and staging flow where the available entities and operational needs fit. The documented integration concepts do not prescribe an X++ class or method sequence for posting every product receipt.
Map and validate each inbound GRN
Use the following as implementation checks, not as a claim that Microsoft mandates a specific code design:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Resolve the target legal entity, vendor, confirmed PO, and applicable PO lines from the inbound document.
- Map the external line identifiers to the intended items and units, and validate quantities and receipt date against the agreed import contract.
- Retain the supplier packing-slip or GRN identifier as the product-receipt reference.
- Determine whether the quantity is ordered, receive-now, or registered, and whether warehouse or load processing must happen before receipt posting.
- Submit the receipt through the supported process selected for the target environment; do not substitute direct table writes for application validation and posting.
- After processing, verify the posted receipt journal, its quantities and date, and the PO’s resulting status. Track the external GRN identifier alongside the resulting receipt identity so that retries and duplicate messages can be handled deliberately.
Microsoft’s product-receipt guidance describes the journal and receipt workflow; the exact X++ implementation remains dependent on the environment and integration contract.
Handle corrections and cancellations as receipt transactions
A posted receipt has controlled correction behavior. Microsoft documents that a correction can reduce the received quantity; increasing the received quantity requires a new receipt. Cancellation creates a separate reversal transaction. Build error recovery around these behaviors rather than treating a posted receipt as an import row that can simply be overwritten. See Product receipt against purchase orders.

- The PO confirmation and purchase-order line mapping are correct for the intended vendor and legal entity.
- The inbound quantity agrees with the selected receipt route, including registration or load handling where applicable.
- The supplier packing-slip reference is retained and can be reconciled to the posted receipt journal.
- The chosen entity, import mechanism, or X++ posting approach is actually available and supported in the target version and configuration.
- Duplicate messages, posting failures, reductions, quantity increases, and cancellations have defined handling paths.
Inventory transactions can also affect inventory subledger and general-ledger accounting through posting profiles; see Microsoft Learn’s Inventory posting profiles.
