“Green Lantern” is a mantle held by different characters, not just one hero. In DC’s later, Corps-centered stories, Hal Jordan is the first human Green Lantern; in publication history, Alan Scott appeared first. These distinctions answer many common quiz questions.
Who is Green Lantern?
Green Lantern is the name used by several heroes who wield powerful rings. DC identifies Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz among Earth’s notable members of the Green Lantern Corps. Which character a question means depends on the era, continuity, or adaptation.

Who was the first Green Lantern?
For publication history, the answer is Alan Scott, whose first appearance was in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. He is distinct from the later Corps-era Lanterns: DC describes Scott as an avatar of the Green, an elemental force tied to living growth on Earth, with his power focused through a ring. The familiar space-faring Corps framework, oath, and characters such as Sinestro came later. DC’s Alan Scott profile and DC’s history of Green Lantern explain the distinction.

Hal Jordan was the first human Green Lantern in DC’s Corps-centered account. He was a test pilot when the dying alien Abin Sur passed the ring to him and explained the Corps. DC lists All-American Comics #16 (1940) as Hal Jordan’s first appearance as a character, but that is not the same as his later role as a human Corps member. DC’s Hal Jordan profile gives his character background.
How did Hal Jordan get his ring?
Abin Sur’s spacecraft crashed on Earth after he was mortally wounded. Before dying, he chose Hal Jordan to receive his ring. Guy Gardner was also a possible successor: DC says he might have become the first human Corps member if he had been a few miles closer, but Hal was nearer and received the ring. DC’s Guy Gardner profile describes the alternate possibility.
What is the Green Lantern Corps?
The Green Lantern Corps is an interstellar organization of ring-bearing Lanterns. DC’s official profile says members speak an ancient oath before charging their emerald rings and doing their duty. The profile does not reproduce the complete oath, so its exact wording can vary by source or version; a quiz asking for the familiar full text should specify the version it expects. Read DC’s Green Lantern Corps profile.
Who are the main human Green Lanterns?
DC’s Corps profile names several prominent Earth members. Their origins and roles differ, so the name alone does not identify one definitive Green Lantern.
| Character | Useful trivia distinction |

| Hal Jordan | Test pilot who received Abin Sur’s ring; DC calls him the first human Green Lantern in the Corps account. |
| John Stewart | Introduced in 1971; DC’s retrospective identifies him as its first African American superhero. |
| Guy Gardner | Another possible successor to Abin Sur, but Hal was closer and got the ring. |
| Kyle Rayner | Received the final ring from a dying Guardian in Green Lantern #50, according to DC’s retrospective. |
| Simon Baz | Named by DC among notable Earth Lanterns; the cited retrospective includes him in later stories. |
| Jessica Cruz | Protector of Sector 2814; she wore the Ring of Volthoom before becoming an official Lantern. |
These are selected milestones, not a complete chronology across every continuity. DC’s retrospective provides the publication-history details for John Stewart and Kyle Rayner. See DC’s Green Lantern history.

Check whether a question is about the first character to appear, the first human in the Corps, a particular comic-book era, or an adaptation. For example, “Who was the original Green Lantern?” can mean Alan Scott in publication history, while “Who was the first human Green Lantern?” points to Hal Jordan in DC’s Corps account. Different continuities and adaptations may frame details differently, so a well-worded quiz names its scope.
