The green ring tradition is associated with willpower, while other Lantern groups draw on different colors and emotions. The roster, powers, and allegiances can change across DC stories and continuities.
What is the Green Lantern Corps?
The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic peacekeeping force made up of members from many sentient species. Its members patrol the universe with power rings, and its headquarters is on Oa. DC’s Green Lantern Corps character profile describes a force of 7,200 Lanterns patrolling 3,600 sectors; those are figures for the fictional organization in that profile, not fixed numbers for every era or continuity.

The Corps itself has been destroyed and rebuilt in its fictional history. That is one reason a character’s membership or role should be understood in the context of a particular story rather than treated as permanent across all DC versions.
What powers does a Green Lantern ring have?
A Green Lantern ring turns its wielder’s intent into green energy. DC’s character profile lists hard-light constructs, instant weaponry, force fields, flight, durability, and alien technology among the Corps’ powers. In practice, a Lantern might shape energy into a shield, restraint, tool, weapon, or vehicle.
#1 Best Overall
Willpower is central to the green-ring tradition. DC describes Lanterns as chosen for their strength and will to control ring power. The choices a wielder makes with constructs also make imagination and judgment part of how their power appears in a story.
Those profile descriptions are a broad guide, not a technical rulebook. A character’s precise abilities, limits, and ring mechanics can differ by story; there is no single set of exact limits that applies unchanged to every Lantern in every era.

Who are the best-known Green Lantern characters?
There is no short, definitive list of every Green Lantern. DC’s Corps profile and editorial features name many Earth-based members, while the Corps’ multi-species makeup means human characters are only part of its story.

- Hal Jordan: A test pilot and one of DC’s most prominent Earth Lanterns. He becomes a major Corps recruit after receiving a ring from Abin Sur.
- John Stewart: A long-running Earth Lantern. DC’s coverage of its 2021 Green Lantern series presents him in that series as an ambassador.
- Guy Gardner: One of the Earth-born Lanterns named in DC’s Corps profile and editorial coverage.
- Kyle Rayner: Another well-known Earth Lantern whose stories have involved the emotional spectrum and white-ring themes. Those storylines do not define a permanent status or his only role.
- Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz: Earth Lanterns identified as newer recruits in DC’s Corps profile.
- Jo Mullein and Keli Quintela: Featured in DC’s introduction to the 2021 Green Lantern series. Jo is described there as a detective investigating events on Oa, and Keli as Teen Lantern. Their devices and origins should not automatically be treated as identical to the standard power-ring story.
Alien Green Lanterns
Many Corps members are not human. DC’s September 2026 feature on alien Lanterns highlights Tomar-Re, Ch’p, and Mogo as examples, not as a complete list.
- Tomar-Re: A scientist from Xudar and a Corps Honor Guard member. DC describes him as the second Green Lantern Hal encountered after Hal received his ring from Abin Sur.
- Ch’p: An alien Lantern associated with Sector 1014.
- Mogo: A notable figure in the Corps. Mogo is one example of how varied the Lanterns’ membership can be.
What do the Green Lantern colors mean?
In DC’s emotional-spectrum framework, each color is associated with an emotion. DC editors Matt Idelson and Pat McCallum described the different colors as representing different emotions in the spectrum. The associations below are fictional lore, not a scientific taxonomy of emotion.
| Color | Association | Common group or context |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Willpower | The Green Lantern Corps’ central tradition. |
| Yellow | Fear | The Sinestro Corps is the familiar yellow-light counterpart. |
| Red | Rage | The Red Lantern Corps is fueled by rage. |
| Blue | Hope | Usually referred to as the Blue Lanterns or Blue Lantern Corps. |
| Orange | Greed | DC’s editorial interview described Larfleeze as the one-member Orange Lantern at that time. |
| Indigo | Compassion | The common Corps-level association in DC’s 2012 editorial interview. |
| Violet | Love | Often associated with the Star Sapphire Corps. |
DC’s 2012 interview gives the indigo Corps association as compassion, while a later official timeline uses “passion” for the indigo entity. The wording depends on whether a story is discussing the Corps-level association or the lore around an entity.

Black and white rings also appear in broader spectrum stories, with associations to death and life. They are useful parts of the wider Lantern mythology, but they do not fit neatly into the basic seven-color chart as equivalent, permanent Corps branches.
How is the Green Lantern Corps different from the Sinestro Corps?
The simplest contrast is the emotion each color represents: Green Lanterns are associated with willpower, while the Sinestro Corps uses yellow light associated with fear. DC’s description of The Sinestro Corps War frames the conflict as fear against will. Red Lanterns offer another clear contrast: their rings are associated with rage rather than willpower.
Other groups have their own histories, membership, and roles. DC’s coverage of Corps oaths and ring types includes the Blue Lanterns, Star Sapphires, Indigo Tribe, Orange Lantern, Black Lanterns, Phantom Ring, and Ultraviolet Corps. They are not all equivalent branches of one stable organization; their status and story function depend on the comic and continuity.
Where can you start reading about the Corps?
The Sinestro Corps War Compendium is an optional collected-print entry point for readers interested in the yellow-light Corps conflict. DC describes the paperback as collecting issues of Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, and related material. Edition details and availability can vary by territory and retailer.
