The Green Lantern Corps is a cosmic organization whose members use emerald power rings and follow an oath. DC describes the rings’ green energy as the energy of willpower. For a first look at the Corps, start with six notable human Lanterns—Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz—whose different origins and roles make them easier to tell apart than any shifting “strongest Lantern” ranking.
What is the Green Lantern Corps?
The Green Lantern Corps is a cosmic organization of ring-wielding members. DC’s overview names several human members, including Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz; it is a useful starting cast, not a complete roster or a definitive ranking. Which Lanterns are most prominent can change across comic runs and adaptations. DC’s Green Lantern Corps overview describes members as carrying out their duties with emerald rings and an oath.

How do Green Lantern power rings work?
At the beginner level, the essential idea is that a Green Lantern’s ring channels green energy associated with willpower. DC’s character profile for Hal Jordan describes the ring’s energy in those terms. DC’s Green Lantern profile establishes that central premise, but it is not an exhaustive guide to every power, limitation, recharge interval, or exception across comic continuities.
So treat broad claims about exactly what every ring can do, or what always limits it, with care unless they are tied to a particular story or version. The color of a ring can also change in story-specific circumstances; that does not necessarily replace a character’s usual affiliation.

What is the Green Lantern oath?
DC’s Corps page presents this as the ancient oath members speak before duty and charging their rings:
“In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power—Green Lantern’s light!”Rank #2

Hal Jordan: the classic entry point
DC describes Hal as a test pilot and the first human Green Lantern. His story is a direct introduction to the standard green-ring premise: a human receives a ring and joins the wider Corps. DC also calls him one of the most legendary wielders of a power ring. Read DC’s Hal Jordan profile.
John Stewart: the leader and tactician
John was first presented as an alternate to Hal, then developed into a Corps leader. DC highlights his leadership and tactical ability, making him a useful contrast to Hal’s test-pilot origin. Read DC’s John Stewart profile.

Guy Gardner: the near-first choice
Guy’s origin shows that Hal was not the only possible human candidate when the ring first sought a successor. DC says Guy would have joined first if he had been closer to the dying Abin Sur. That near-miss is a clear way into the Corps’ early history without treating Hal’s selection as inevitable. Read DC’s Guy Gardner profile.
Kyle Rayner: a Lantern with later roles
Kyle is one of DC’s named notable human Lanterns. A DC feature connects him with the White Lantern role, but that is a later, continuity-specific development—not a definition of every version of Kyle or his usual place in a beginner overview. It also does not settle which Lantern is strongest: claims of that kind are interpretations, not a neutral measurement. DC’s Corps overview names Kyle; DC’s feature arguing for Kyle’s strength is explicitly an editorial case.

Jessica Cruz: a story shaped by fear and agency
DC identifies Jessica as a protector of Sector 2814 and foregrounds how she overcomes fear. Her profile also notes an earlier connection to the Ring of Volthoom. Her story is about agency in the face of fear; it should not be reduced to the idea that fear simply disappears. Read DC’s Jessica Cruz profile.
Simon Baz: a newer human member
DC includes Simon among newer human Lanterns in its Corps overview. That overview establishes his place in the broader cast, but does not provide the detailed biography available for some of the other characters here. See DC’s Corps overview.

If you want a collected story that brings several human Lanterns together, DC lists Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps: Sinestro’s Law. Its premise centers on Sinestro’s Yellow Lantern Corps enforcing his version of order, and the collection features Hal Jordan, Jessica Cruz, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner. It is a specific run and story—not a complete introduction to every era or continuity. See DC’s collected-edition page.
