Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA green dashboard does not prove a customer request reached the application—or that the full customer journey worked. It proves only that the monitored signals, for the traffic and conditions they represent, stayed within their configured thresholds. To detect a broken route, monitor the critical path from outside it, validate a meaningful response, and use traces and step-level results to locate the failure.
Why can users be blocked while dashboards stay green?
Every metric has a producer and a scope: a particular component emits it, for a particular set of events, under particular reporting conditions. A dashboard can accurately show healthy infrastructure while omitting requests that failed earlier in the path, or while showing a metric that does not test the customer action in question.

AWS documents this distinction for Application Load Balancers (ALBs): its metrics are reported when requests are flowing through the load balancer, at 60-second intervals when requests flow. If no requests are flowing, or there is no data for a metric, that metric is not reported. ALB metrics also exclude health-check requests. Those semantics do not make ALB metrics defective, nor do they establish that a particular outage occurred. They do mean that an ALB graph alone cannot prove that a real customer request reached the application and completed successfully. AWS explains ALB metric reporting and health-check exclusions.

List the customer-facing route in order—for example, DNS, edge or load balancer, application, and any required downstream service. For each dashboard signal, record which component emits it, what events it counts, and what conditions cause it to be absent. Then ask where the first evidence of an actual customer-like request should appear.

- A healthy host or process shows that a resource is up; it does not establish that the public route works.
- A load-balancer signal describes traffic the load balancer observes, not necessarily every attempted visit or a completed workflow.
- A health-check result proves only the check it performs, such as receiving an acceptable response from one endpoint.
How can you tell whether a request reached the application?
Run an active check from outside the application path being monitored. It should use the customer-facing route and verify a response that means something to the user. AWS describes CloudWatch Synthetics canaries as scheduled scripts that follow customer routes and actions, check endpoint or API availability and latency, and can run even when the application has no customer traffic. AWS documentation says a canary can run as frequently as once per minute; that is a product capability, not a recommended frequency for every service. Set the cadence according to the route’s importance, operational needs, rate limits, and monitoring cost. AWS documents CloudWatch Synthetics canaries.
A useful check validates more than connectivity when the customer’s success depends on more than connectivity. A response code may be successful while the page is incomplete, the expected content is missing, or a required downstream call has failed. Encode the success condition the user actually needs: expected content, a usable API response, or completion of the essential steps in a transaction.

Choose the check depth to match the route
For a simple public endpoint, a basic HTTP(S) health check can provide a lightweight signal. For a journey that spans multiple calls or dependencies, use a scripted synthetic transaction with separate outcomes for its important steps. AWS guidance describes canaries that make multiple HTTP(S) calls, monitor sequences and endpoints with downstream dependencies, and publish step-level metrics that can be measured and alarmed on independently. Canaries can also reach private VPC resources and reachable on-premises workloads. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes synthetic monitoring approaches.
Should you use a health check or a scripted synthetic transaction?
These checks answer different questions. A basic health check is simpler and narrower; a scripted canary can represent a deeper customer journey and provide more diagnostic detail, at the cost of more planning and maintenance.

| Decision point | Route 53 HTTP(S) health check | Scripted CloudWatch Synthetics canary |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | Checks one endpoint response. | Can exercise a sequence of calls, a customer route, or endpoints with downstream dependencies. |
| Validation | Considers a 2xx or 3xx response healthy and can look for a specified substring in the first 5,120 bytes returned. | Can encode custom checks for the response and steps in the journey. |
| Network reach | Suitable for public endpoints. | Can reach private VPC resources and reachable on-premises workloads. |
| Setup effort | Requires less planning and effort than a customizable canary. | Requires more planning and effort, in exchange for greater flexibility. |
| Diagnostic detail | Primarily provides the health-check result. | Can provide step-level metrics; failed-run investigation may also use reports, screenshots, logs, and HAR files where available. |
A status code or response substring is useful for checking an endpoint, but neither alone proves that a multi-step workflow or its dependencies succeeded. Choose the least complex check that establishes the outcome you need; add scripted steps where a single endpoint result leaves important parts of the journey untested. AWS’s synthetic monitoring guidance covers the distinction between Route 53 checks and canaries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you locate the failing boundary?
Use the synthetic result to identify what failed and service telemetry to narrow down where. When tracing is configured and the relevant services emit telemetry, AWS Application Signals can show service and dependency topology, service metrics, SLO health, canaries, and client requests. AWS says canary calls can appear associated with services when X-Ray tracing is configured. A service or operation with no activity in the selected time window may not appear, so a service map is a way to investigate observed telemetry—not proof that every missing request has been traced. AWS describes Application Signals and its telemetry views.

- Dual DC power inputs for enhancing overall system availability
- Start with the failed journey step. Compare the canary’s result at each step to determine the last successful action and first failed one.
- Check the corresponding boundary. Look for the request in the logs, metrics, or traces emitted by the component expected to receive it.
- Follow the dependency path. If the application received the request, inspect the downstream call and its result; if it did not, investigate the earlier route components.
- Use artifacts to examine the failure. For failed CloudWatch canary runs, AWS points to the SuccessPercent metric, step reports, screenshots, logs, and HAR files when available. AWS lists canary troubleshooting data and guidance.
AWS recommends setting a timeout of at least 15 seconds for its canary setup to accommodate Lambda cold starts and instrumentation startup. Treat that as AWS-specific guidance for canaries, not a universal timeout for other monitoring tools or for every customer request.
What should a practical monitoring review change?
- Define the customer outcome. Name the route and the result that counts as success, rather than relying on a generic “up” signal.
- Mark the first observable boundary. Identify where a real or synthetic request should first appear and which telemetry confirms it.
- Pair signals with their scope. Document what each dashboard metric represents, including traffic exclusions and conditions where data is not reported.
- Alarm on meaningful failures. Alert on failed critical journeys or their individual steps, not only on host health or infrastructure averages.
- Rehearse diagnosis. Confirm responders can access the canary result and relevant reports, logs, screenshots, or request archives, then follow the path to the component that owns the failure.
The AWS examples here describe AWS-specific behavior and features; they do not establish that AWS is the only suitable monitoring provider or the best fit for every architecture. The underlying principle is provider-neutral: an infrastructure graph is evidence about its own signal, while an outside-in check tests whether the customer route works.
