When a Next.js 16 site works locally but breaks for some users, check three areas: bundler configuration, deployment version skew, and cache or runtime differences. These are useful diagnostic patterns, not an official or exhaustive list of failures that happen only in production.
1. Check whether Next.js 16 is using the bundler you expect
Next.js 16 makes Turbopack the default for both next dev and next build. A project that still relies on custom webpack configuration may therefore behave differently during an upgrade. The Next.js upgrade guide warns: “If your project has a custom webpack configuration and you run next build (which now uses Turbopack by default), the build will fail to prevent misconfiguration issues.” Next.js 16 upgrade guide.

This is often an upgrade or build-time issue, not a failure that first appears after launch. Treat it as an early configuration check rather than evidence that all post-deployment errors come from Turbopack.
What to check
- Review
next.configand project plugins for a customwebpackconfiguration. - Choose deliberately: migrate the configuration for Turbopack, or use the Webpack build path by running
next build --webpack. - Check the Next.js 16 documented minimums: Node.js 20.9+ and TypeScript 5.1+. The documented browser baselines are Chrome 111+, Edge 111+, Firefox 111+, and Safari 16.4+. Next.js 16 upgrade guide.
2. Look for version skew in multi-instance or rolling deployments
With a self-hosted deployment running multiple servers, or during a rolling release, a browser may send a request associated with one build to a server running another. Next.js documents possible consequences including missing assets, Server Function mismatches, and navigation failures. Next.js self-hosting guide.

Protect requests across deployments
Configure a deployment ID for version-skew protection, following the self-hosting guide. When Next.js detects a mismatch, it can trigger a full-page navigation so the browser loads a consistent deployment. This is a mitigation for build-version mismatch; it does not fix unrelated application errors.
For multiple instances, use the same Server Function encryption key on every instance. Otherwise, one server may be unable to decrypt an action created by another.

Evidence to collect
- Record the build ID or deployment ID associated with the affected request, along with the instance that handled it.
- Capture the request path, browser version, and server and client error details.
- For an incident during rollout, check whether the affected asset or navigation request crossed between builds.
3. Check cache coordination and production runtime differences
Self-hosted Next.js instances use a local filesystem cache by default. That can become a source of inconsistency when a deployment has multiple instances, ephemeral compute, or a CDN or reverse proxy. If instances do not share cache state or coordinate invalidation, one user may receive stale content while another sees an updated response. A proxy or CDN that does not respect cache directives or the response’s cache-key variability can also serve stale or mismatched variants. Next.js self-hosting guide.

Trace the response, not just the page
- Inspect response and cache headers for the failing route and determine whether the CDN or proxy preserves the intended directives.
- Check that the cache key varies on the inputs that distinguish responses, where applicable.
- For self-hosted multi-instance deployments, decide how cache storage is shared and how cache-tag invalidation is coordinated.
- Verify that data requests are cached as intended; the production checklist recommends checking actual behavior in a production-like run. Next.js production checklist.
Validate the built app before and after release
Next.js recommends exercising a production build with next start, rather than treating development mode as the only test. From the project directory, run:

next buildto create the production build.next startto serve that build locally and check production-like behavior.
Then run equivalent checks in a deployment environment that resembles production, especially when its runtime configuration, number of instances, CDN, or proxy differs from local development. The production checklist also recommends global error and not-found UI, monitoring and field data, and simulated Lighthouse checks; those measures help surface failures but do not replace investigating the affected request and response. Do not assume that a runtime incident is automatically a framework bug. Compare the conditions that differ between local testing and the affected release:
- Does runtime configuration match the configuration used to build the app?
- Are all instances running the expected build, and do they share the required Server Function encryption key?
- Is cache state shared or coordinated, and are invalidations reaching every relevant instance?
- Does the CDN or reverse proxy honor Next.js cache directives and cache-key variation?
- Do logs and field telemetry identify which instance and deployment served the request?
For a specific incident, preserve the exact deployment and build or deployment ID, instance count, runtime and browser versions, request path, response and cache headers, and server/client error evidence before changing configuration. Those details help distinguish a bundler or application issue from version skew, caching, or environment differences.
