A green build does not prove that a newly installed desktop app can create and keep a user’s first piece of data. Compilation, packaging, launch, persistence, and publication are separate claims. To verify the experience users actually get, test the exact packaged artifact from a defined profile state, create or import real data, save it, then close and relaunch the app to confirm that the data remains.
Why a green build can still fail on first boot
Each release stage answers a different question. A successful compile shows that source code built under a particular environment. A package job shows that an artifact was produced. Neither proves that the package installs and launches on a clean machine, that its first-run flow can write local state, or that the state survives a restart.

The crucial test is not merely whether the app opens. A user’s first-run experience is broken if the app cannot create or import data, save it to the intended location, and recover it on the next launch. A development build may behave differently from a packaged release because packaging, platform permissions, paths, and profile state can affect runtime behavior.

Use the actual release candidate intended for distribution—not just a source-tree run or a development build. Record its filename and digest so the result is tied to a specific artifact. Start with a specified clean profile, follow the real first-run path, create or import representative data, save, close the application, relaunch, and verify the data. Keep the logs and resulting files as evidence.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Identify the artifact. Record the package filename and digest, platform, and architecture.
- Define the starting state. State whether the profile is new, contains prior data, or is being upgraded from a supported release. For a clean-profile test, make clear how the clean state was established.
- Exercise a real user task. Create or import representative data through the application’s normal interface and save it.
- Verify persistence. Close the app fully, relaunch the same installed artifact, and confirm that the saved data is present and usable.
- Preserve evidence. Keep logs, the test steps and outcome, and the relevant resulting files. If launch fails, preserve logs and user data before attempting cleanup.
A useful test record says what happened, not just that it passed. Include the artifact identity, platform and architecture, profile condition, steps, expected result, actual result, and run evidence. “Fresh install passed” by itself cannot be reproduced or connected to a particular downloadable package.
Cover distinct first-run and upgrade conditions
One successful clean-profile run does not cover every way a release can encounter local state. Test these conditions separately, because each exposes a different failure class:

- New profile, online: Exercise the first run with network access available. This checks the normal connected path without assuming that online success covers offline behavior.
- New profile, offline: Run the same first-use flow without a network connection. This reveals whether essential setup or local persistence depends unexpectedly on connectivity.
- Existing profile with prior data: Open a profile containing representative user state and verify that the new release can read and preserve it.
- Storage permission denied or unavailable: Exercise the app where the intended storage access is denied or unavailable. Verify that failures are handled clearly rather than reported as a successful save.
- Upgrade from the previous supported release: Start with data from that release, upgrade using the intended release path, and verify that the updated app can use the data.
Report each run against its own starting condition and result. A pass for a new online profile does not establish that an upgrade, offline start, or denied-permission case works.
Keep release evidence separate by stage
Release confidence is easier to assess when each claim has evidence attached to the stage it describes. Do not let a green check in one stage stand in for checks later in the chain.

| Release stage | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|
| Build | The specified source and build configuration compiled successfully. |
| Package | A named artifact was produced; record its filename and digest. |
| Installed runtime | That artifact installed and launched on the stated platform and architecture. |
| Persisted state | A real create-or-import task saved successfully, and its result survived close and relaunch under the recorded profile condition. |
| Tag-time jobs | The checks triggered by the release tag completed; record them separately from local or pull-request checks. |
| Publication | The artifact made available to users is identified and matched to the tested artifact. |
This separation helps locate the gap when a release fails: build success is not package verification, and package verification is not proof of persistence or publication identity.
Browser storage needs its own failure handling
For desktop applications that use browser storage, persistence is not a blanket guarantee. MDN’s guidance on storage quotas and eviction criteria, last modified January 5, 2026, says origin data is best-effort by default and can be evicted under storage pressure. An origin can request persistent storage through the Storage API, but that does not remove the need to handle write failures.

Quotas vary by browser and storage type. MDN describes Web Storage as limited to 10 MiB total across browsers, with up to 5 MiB each for local and session storage per origin; writes beyond quota raise QuotaExceededError. IndexedDB, Cache API, and OPFS limits are browser-managed and vary. Treat these figures and policies as browser- and version-dependent implementation details, not as a guarantee that an application’s data is backed up or can never be lost. Handle storage errors and give users a meaningful outcome when a write fails.
What the WorldScript Studio report does—and does not—establish
A DEV Community article, “Green Build, Broken First Boot,” by qnbs, posted October 1, 2026 by the page’s context, reports that WorldScript Studio’s v1.28.7-to-v1.28.8 release history included an AppImage first-boot failure involving persisted state. It also reports that a later PR (#908) corrected handling of literal dot-files for Linux and macOS Tauri permissions. These are claims reported by that article; they are not independently confirmed here against release artifacts, repository changes, or CI records.

The reported correction should not be treated as proof that a released package passed every first-boot condition. The practical lesson is to connect a fix to evidence from the exact release artifact and the relevant profile, permission, and persistence tests.
