If you want to avoid hostile player encounters, choose Joint Operations (PvE). If you want the chance to fight players from opposing factions as well as AI enemies, choose Warfare (PvEvP). Gray Zone Warfare does not call its latter option a pure PvP mode: it combines player-versus-player encounters with the game’s AI threats. Both modes support solo play or squads of up to four.
What is the difference between PvE and PvP in Gray Zone Warfare?
MADFINGER Games calls its PvE option Joint Operations and its PvEvP option Warfare. The distinction is whether other players can be a threat:

These rules and group-size details are described in MADFINGER Games’ mode overview. Its support article summarizes Joint Operations this way: “In PvE mode, players cannot attack or loot each other and can only engage with AI enemies.”

Can you avoid PvP?
Yes. Select Joint Operations if avoiding hostile interactions with other players is your priority. The official rule is that players cannot attack or loot one another in this mode; your combat opponents are AI enemies.

Choose Warfare if you are comfortable with the possibility of meeting and fighting players from opposing factions while dealing with AI. It is best understood as PvEvP, rather than a PvP-only server type.
What are Conflict Zones?
MADFINGER describes Conflict Zones as areas where players from opposing factions can come into contact. The studio’s Conflict Zones support article says they are 200 meters in diameter and active for five minutes by default; the duration can extend when another player joins.
Those details explain how the studio describes Conflict Zones, but they do not establish that every possible PvP interaction is restricted to those areas. If you want to avoid player combat, Joint Operations is the clearly stated choice.
Which mode should you choose?
Choose Joint Operations if you want a PvE-focused run
- You want to focus on missions and AI enemies without being attacked or looted by other players.
- You prefer a more predictable threat profile than one that includes opposing-faction players.
- You still want the option to play solo or with a squad of up to four.
Choose Warfare if you want faction-versus-faction uncertainty
- You want player encounters to be part of the experience, alongside AI combat.
- You are comfortable with the risk of meeting hostile players from opposing factions.
- You want the same solo or up-to-four-player squad options available in Joint Operations.
Neither choice is objectively better; the right fit depends on whether player combat is something you want to avoid or welcome. These recommendations follow from the published mode rules, not from comparative data on difficulty, population, or queue times.
Do you need a particular edition to play PvE or PvEvP?
The publisher’s April 2026 edition overview lists Standard, Tactical, Elite, and Supporter editions, with different in-game items and storage benefits. It says included items can be obtained in-game. The page does not establish that a higher edition is required to access either Joint Operations or Warfare, so do not treat an edition upgrade as a mode unlock based on that information.

MADFINGER Games has said the game focused on PvE from the beginning and that its design direction is to expand player choice and improve both PvEvP and PvE. That is the studio’s stated direction, not evidence that one mode currently has better quality or a larger player base.

As of October 4, 2026, the official site described Update 0.5: Rogue Ops as upcoming and announced October 19 access for Supporters. That date was a planned milestone at the time, not confirmation that the update had already released. Check the official site for current release status.
A pinned developer FAQ on Steam says major updates bring global wipes roughly every six months. It does not establish whether progression is shared or isolated between Joint Operations and Warfare; the available mode information is not enough to promise either arrangement.
