GrapheneOS is a privacy- and security-focused alternative to stock Android for supported Pixel devices. It adds operating-system-level controls and security hardening, while making Google Play optional. If you install Play, it runs as ordinary sandboxed apps rather than receiving special system privileges. That can preserve access to much of the Android app ecosystem, but it does not guarantee that every app—especially banking apps—will work. Official project materials do not establish that GrapheneOS is faster, slower, or more battery-efficient than stock Android on the same Pixel.
Is GrapheneOS better than stock Android on a Pixel?
It depends on what you want from your phone. GrapheneOS is based on Android Open Source Project code and focuses on stronger sandboxing, exploit mitigations, and privacy controls. Stock Android on Pixel provides Google’s integrated services and familiar app compatibility without requiring the user to configure an alternative operating system.

GrapheneOS may suit someone who wants more control over app permissions and Google integration, and is willing to check essential apps and manage a device transition. Stock Android may be simpler for someone who relies on apps or services that expect Google’s standard integration. Neither choice is universally better: compare privacy controls, your specific apps, device eligibility, and your comfort with installation before deciding.

GrapheneOS adds operating-system controls
GrapheneOS adds controls such as a per-app Network permission. If an app does not need internet access, you can deny it network access at the operating-system level. The project describes its broader approach as strengthening sandboxing, exploit mitigations, and the permission model. These are OS-level protections; they do not mean every app or online service becomes private.

Google Play is optional, not privileged
GrapheneOS does not bundle Google apps or services, and Google Play is not the backend for GrapheneOS operating-system services—even when Play is installed. Its sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer lets you install official Google Play apps as regular apps. They receive no special access or privileges and remain subject to standard app sandboxing and permissions. You can install Play in a chosen user or work profile rather than putting it on every profile.
Installing Play still means Google software is present on the phone. Conversely, avoiding Play entirely can remove functionality from apps that depend on it. GrapheneOS explains its approach at its sandboxed Google Play feature page.

Will your apps work, including banking apps?
GrapheneOS describes sandboxed Google Play as providing near-complete compatibility for apps that depend on Play, and its usage guide says the Play Store, app delivery, in-app purchases, and licensing functions are supported. That is a broad ecosystem-level description, not a guarantee for any particular app. Some features that require privileged system access are unavailable.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Banking apps are a particular uncertainty. GrapheneOS calls them a problematic category: some work, while many have extensive Play-services dependencies and other app-specific complications. Before switching, verify the exact apps you rely on—especially banking and payments, but also work, streaming, and transit apps. The project’s banking-app guidance describes the issue; it cannot establish that a specific app will meet your needs.
Official Android Auto is also available through an extension to the sandboxed Play compatibility layer, with reduced privileges. This illustrates that compatibility may depend on configuration rather than matching stock Android’s integrated setup.
Which Pixel phones support GrapheneOS?
As checked on October 7, 2026, the official GrapheneOS FAQ listed the Pixel 10a; Pixel 10, 9, and 8 family models; Pixel Fold; Pixel Tablet; and Pixel 7 and 6 family models as supported. That list can change, so check it for the exact model immediately before installing or buying.

GrapheneOS recommends Pixel 8-generation and newer devices for purchase because of newer security capabilities and a longer minimum update guarantee. GrapheneOS reports that Google provides a seven-year minimum update-support guarantee for Pixel 8-generation and newer devices. This is not the remaining support time for every Pixel currently on sale: model-specific support end dates differ. The FAQ also says these newer devices support hardware memory tagging, which GrapheneOS uses by default for the base OS and known-compatible user-installed apps.

Being a Pixel is not enough to establish eligibility. The exact device must be on the current support list and OEM-unlockable. Some carrier-sold devices, particularly in the United States, may be locked against installation. Check the model, carrier variant, and unlock status before committing.

Does GrapheneOS make a Pixel slower or improve battery life?
The official GrapheneOS home page says the project tries to avoid impacting user experience with its privacy and security features. That is a design goal, not a controlled performance result. The official materials reviewed do not provide a current, device-matched comparison of app launch times, sustained performance, battery life, or thermal behavior against stock Android.
There is therefore no supported basis here to claim that either operating system is faster or more efficient. A meaningful comparison would need the same Pixel model, app versions, settings, network conditions, battery health, and workload. Individual results may also depend on installed apps and configuration.
How do you install GrapheneOS?
GrapheneOS documents two official installation options: a WebUSB-based installer recommended for most users and a command-line method for more technical users. Use the current official installation guide, rather than third-party flashing instructions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm eligibility. Check the current supported-device list and make sure your exact Pixel variant is OEM-unlockable.
- Prepare your data and equipment. Back up data before changing operating systems. The WebUSB installer requires a computer with adequate free memory and storage, plus a USB cable. The guide recommends the high-quality, standards-compliant cable packaged with the device when possible; low-quality cables and hubs are common sources of installation problems. See the WebUSB installer prerequisites.
- Follow the official installer steps. Choose the WebUSB installer or command-line path and follow the current instructions for your device. Installation changes the device’s operating system; it is not a risk-free settings change.
Can you go back to stock Android?
Yes. GrapheneOS’s official installer documentation also explains how to replace GrapheneOS with the stock OS. Treat this as another device-flashing process: back up your data and follow the current official steps. Do not assume that changing systems will preserve data or be risk-free.
Quick Recap
How to decide
- Choose GrapheneOS if you value its additional OS-level privacy controls and hardening, have a supported and unlockable Pixel, and are prepared to verify your essential apps.
- Choose stock Android if you prefer Google’s integrated setup or do not want to manage app-specific compatibility and an operating-system installation.
- Before switching either way, check the live support list, confirm device unlockability, and test the apps and services you cannot do without.
