Gradle Build Failed: How to Find the Real Error

The final “Gradle build failed” line is a summary, not a diagnosis. Trace the specific error and use Gradle’s help task to locate the failing stage.

Gradle build failed means the build did not complete; it does not explain why. The useful clue is the specific message above that summary: a configuration error, failed task, unresolved dependency, environment problem, or daemon connection issue. Find that evidence before changing versions or clearing caches.

What does “Gradle build failed” actually tell you?

It tells you the build stopped unsuccessfully, not what caused it. In some Unity-related output, the phrase appears in a wrapper such as CommandInvokationFailure: Gradle build failed. That wrapper is a category of failure, not a diagnosis, and the phrase is not limited to Unity.

Start with the complete console output. Look above the final summary for the first specific failure, such as a named failed task, a What went wrong explanation, an exception, a missing dependency coordinate, or a JVM message. The Gradle documentation recommends identifying the actual error rather than relying on the final build status (Gradle troubleshooting builds, documentation version 9.8.1).

Can Gradle start, and is the environment available?

First determine whether the problem occurs before Gradle can run at all. In a project that includes the Gradle Wrapper, run:

./gradlew --version

For a separately installed Gradle, use gradle --version. If the command cannot be found or launched, check the installation and the symptom-relevant settings: whether Gradle is on PATH, whether JAVA_HOME points to an available Java installation, and whether the wrapper or executable has permission to run. If Gradle prints its version, the command is starting; continue to the configuration test rather than treating the final build summary as an installation diagnosis.

The Gradle 9.8.1 manual’s setup example calls for JDK 17 or higher. That is not a universal rule for every project: Java compatibility depends on the Gradle version and the project’s requirements. Check the versions your project actually uses before changing its JDK.

Does configuration fail before the requested task?

Gradle configures the build before executing requested tasks. To test whether configuration itself reproduces the problem, run the project’s wrapper with the help task:

./gradlew help

If the same failure occurs, investigate build configuration: settings and build scripts, plugins, and other configuration inputs. If help succeeds but the original build fails, focus on the requested task and its inputs. Gradle’s troubleshooting guide explains: “If not, the problem exists when executing one or more requested tasks (Gradle executes configuration scripts first, followed by build steps).” Here, “not” refers to the error not persisting when running help.

How do you investigate dependencies, tasks, and daemon issues?

When a dependency cannot be resolved

Use Gradle’s dependency view to inspect the affected configuration and resolution reasons. The exact dependency-reporting command depends on the project and configuration, so use the report for the dependency named in the error rather than guessing at a missing coordinate or changing repository settings without evidence.

When a task fails without a clear explanation

Rerun the relevant task with --info to get more detail about its behavior. Keep the original output too: the first specific exception or task failure may be more useful than the final summary.

When daemon communication is implicated

Gradle’s daemon logs are under $GRADLE_USER_HOME/daemon/<version>/. Check them when the output points to daemon startup or communication trouble. Gradle documents NAT masquerading as one possible cause of a daemon connection problem; that is a specific network-related branch, not a general fix for any build failure.

What should you do before changing the project?

  1. Save the complete output. Record the first specific error, named task, exception, dependency coordinate, or JVM message—not just the last line.
  2. Check whether Gradle starts. Run ./gradlew --version for a wrapper-based project, or gradle --version for an installed Gradle.
  3. Test configuration. Run ./gradlew help and compare its result with the failing build.
  4. Follow the evidence. Investigate configuration, task execution, dependency resolution, environment, or daemon communication according to the output.
  5. Escalate with useful details. If the issue remains unclear, share the Gradle and project versions, full relevant output, and the checks already run in Gradle’s help forum or another relevant developer support resource. Gradle also lists Professional Services as a support option.
