It has a 1,050,000-token context window, supports text and image input, and is priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens at standard rates for prompts up to 272K input tokens. Use the Responses API for tool calling; compare its quality, latency, and total cost with GPT-6 Astra on your own workloads rather than treating OpenAI’s “near-Astra” positioning as a universal benchmark.
What is GPT-6.1 Sol?
GPT-6.1 Sol is a model available through the OpenAI API, released September 29, 2026. OpenAI positions it for complex coding, computer use, and professional work. Its model identifier is gpt-6.1-sol. The company describes its performance as “near-Astra” at lower cost; that is vendor positioning, not an independent benchmark result. Test it against your own tasks before choosing it over Astra.

Its large context window can accommodate long inputs, but context capacity is not the same as a guarantee that every detail in a long prompt will be used accurately. Monitor task success and latency in production, and use caching or compaction where they fit your workflow.
What are GPT-6.1 Sol’s specifications and capabilities?
| Specification | GPT-6.1 Sol |
|---|---|
| API model identifier | gpt-6.1-sol |
| Context window | 1,050,000 tokens |
| Maximum output | 128,000 tokens |
| Listed knowledge cutoff | April 30, 2026 |
| Input | Text and images |
| Output | Text |
| Audio and video | Unsupported |
| Streaming, function calling, structured outputs | Supported |
| Fine-tuning | Unsupported |
OpenAI lists these tools for the Responses API: web search, file search, image generation, code interpreter, hosted shell, apply patch, skills, computer use, MCP, and tool search. Tool availability and behavior can depend on the API workflow; consult the current model documentation before building around a specific tool.

GPT-6.1 Sol supports US and EU data residency. Fast mode is unavailable with EU data residency, according to the model page. Confirm current residency eligibility and applicable pricing before deployment.
How much does GPT-6.1 Sol cost?
OpenAI’s standard text-token rates, published in 2026 for prompts with up to 272K input tokens, are per million tokens:
Rank #2
| Token type | Standard price per million tokens |
|---|---|
| Input | $2.00 |
| Cached input | $0.10 |
| Cache writes | $2.50 |
| Output | $10.00 |
For prompts above 272K input tokens, OpenAI says input and cache rates are doubled and output is charged at 1.5 times the standard rate for the full request. The model page also lists different rates by processing mode: Fast is 2× standard, Batch and Flex are 50% below standard, and regional processing adds 10% where available. These are published rates, not a fixed estimate of what an application will spend; check the live pricing page before budgeting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cached input is listed at 5% of the uncached input rate, while cache writes are 1.25× that rate. To estimate a request, account for uncached input, cached input, cache writes, and generated output separately. Long prompts and processing mode can materially change the total. Tool usage may also have separate costs, so include it when estimating a workflow rather than counting model tokens alone.
How do you use GPT-6.1 Sol in the API?
Set the model to gpt-6.1-sol. Choose the API based on whether the request needs tools: use Responses for tool calling, or Chat Completions for a request without tools. The supported reasoning-effort values are low, medium, high, xhigh, and max; medium is the default. The values none and minimal are unsupported for this model.
- For a new workflow that needs tools, create a request with the Responses API and set
modeltogpt-6.1-sol. - Set
reasoning.effortto one of the supported values, or omit it to use the documentedmediumdefault. - Add the relevant supported tool configuration if the workflow requires it, then test the request on representative inputs.
- Track task success, latency, token use, and any applicable tool costs in production.
Chat Completions is available for requests that do not need tool calling. If a workflow depends on a capability such as image input or a specific hosted tool, verify it against the current model page before relying on it.

When should you choose Sol over Astra?
OpenAI recommends Sol for complex projects where cost matters and describes it as offering near-Astra performance for less. That claim does not establish that Sol matches Astra on every task. Run both models against representative work from your own application and compare the outcomes that matter to you.

| Model | Input per million tokens | Cached input per million tokens | Output per million tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra | $10 | $1 | $50 |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | $2 | $0.10 | $10 |
| GPT-6 Luna | $0.10 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
These are the family-guide’s published standard rates from OpenAI in 2026; they do not account for the long-prompt multipliers or processing-mode differences described above. Luna’s lower listed price alone does not establish that it is suitable for a complex workload.
Best Value
- Task quality: Evaluate correctness and task completion on representative prompts, codebases, and tool workflows.
- Total cost: Include input, cached input, cache writes, output, long-prompt rates, processing mode, and tool charges where applicable.
- Latency and reasoning: Measure the response time and reasoning effort your use case needs, not just the model’s token price.
- Capabilities: Check tool support and modalities; Sol accepts text and images but does not support audio or video.
- Residency: Confirm that the available data-residency and processing options meet your deployment requirements.
OpenAI’s family guidance recommends matching the model, reasoning effort, and speed to the task, then monitoring task success and latency in production. A short, repeatable evaluation using your own inputs is more useful than assuming one model is best for every project.
