To connect your phone to a smart TV, choose a method supported by both devices: cast from a compatible app to play selected media, use screen mirroring to show the whole phone display, or connect by HDMI if your phone supports video output. The right choice depends on your phone model, TV and whether you want one app or the full screen on your TV.
Choose the connection method that matches what you want to see
| Method | What appears on the TV | What you need | Wi-Fi or extra equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cast from an app | Selected video or audio from a Cast-enabled app, rather than everything on the phone screen | A compatible app and Google Cast receiver | Google directs users to connect the phone and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network |
| Screen mirroring | The phone screen and its interface | A phone and TV that support the same mirroring method, such as AirPlay or Smart View | Wireless; exact requirements and steps vary by device |
| HDMI | Phone video on the TV | A compatible video-output feature, adapter or cable, and an available TV HDMI input | Wired; requires compatible hardware |
Cast a video or audio app to the TV
Use casting when you want to watch or listen to content from a supported app, not display every item on your phone. Google Cast app casting is distinct from full-screen mirroring.

- Connect the phone and the TV or streaming receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a Cast-enabled app on the phone and start the content.
- Tap the app’s Cast button, then select the TV or receiver.
If the TV does not appear, confirm the app supports Google Cast and both devices are on the same network. On iPhone or iPad, allow the app to access the Local Network when prompted or when needed for device discovery. Google lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12.0 or later as requirements for Cast-enabled apps; those are different from the setup requirements for Google streaming devices. See Google’s instructions for casting from Cast-enabled apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMirror the phone screen
Mirroring shows the phone’s screen on the TV, which is useful for displaying the interface rather than sending only a supported app’s media. The phone and TV need to support the same wireless method; menu names and availability depend on their models.

These are Samsung-specific statements, not compatibility rules for other TV brands. Connect by HDMI when wireless options do not fit
A wired connection is an option if the TV lacks a compatible wireless receiver or a wireless connection is unreliable. It requires a phone that supports video output and an adapter or cable compatible with that phone and the TV’s HDMI input. A USB-C connector by itself does not establish that the phone can send video to a TV.

Add a streaming receiver to a TV with HDMI
If a TV has HDMI but no Google Cast receiver, a compatible streaming receiver such as Chromecast or Google TV Streamer can add that option. Google’s listed requirements for these streaming devices include Android 9.0 or later or iOS 17.0 or later for setup. The device also requires HDCP 1.3 or higher; 4K playback requires HDCP 2.2, a 4K display and internet of at least 20 Mbps under Google’s stated requirements. Check the receiver and TV against Google’s device requirements before choosing this route.
