Laser effects or recognizable holiday pictures?
“Projector” can describe different display styles. Laser-effect models create light patterns, often moving or changing color; slide projectors use themed images or films to show recognizable shapes and scenes. Choose based on the image you want on the house, not just the coverage number.
- Choose laser effects if you prefer abstract, moving patterns. Govee H7073 combines RGB laser patterns with aurora effects.
- Choose replaceable slides if you want recognizable holiday themes. Govee’s Holiday Pattern Projector Light, model H3860, includes 16 replaceable films across six holiday themes, alongside a separate nebula effect. It advertises projection from 0–32 ft and coverage up to 1,500 sq ft; its manufacturer lists the projector as IP67 and the adapter as IP44. A stake and base are included. How far away should you put a Christmas projector?
Start with the distance needed to illuminate your intended area, then check whether your yard can provide that space with a clear line of sight to the wall. Coverage claims are tied to placement distance: for example, Govee advertises H7073’s maximum 5,069 sq ft coverage at 33 ft. A projector placed closer may cover less area or produce a different image size. BestReviews cautions that covering a large area can require positioning a projector roughly 30 ft from the house; that is a general placement consideration, not a universal requirement. - Compare that distance with the manufacturer’s stated projection range, and note the distance attached to any maximum-area claim.
- Consider obstacles, aiming range, and where cables and the adapter can be kept safely out of exposure.
Are Christmas light projectors waterproof?
Do not treat “waterproof” as a yes-or-no quality for an entire kit. Check the rating for the projector, control box, and power adapter separately. An IP rating describes protection against ingress under a defined classification; it does not mean every included electrical component can be left in the same conditions. For instance, H7073’s projector and control box are listed as IP65 but its adapter is IP44; H3860’s projector is listed as IP67 and its adapter IP44. Follow the manufacturer’s placement and use instructions for each component.

What controls, mounting, and setup features matter?
Included controls and installation options vary by model. Before buying, check the current product version for the features you will actually use:
- Image selection: number and type of built-in patterns, or whether films are replaceable.
- Control method: remote, app, timer, motion settings, or synchronization, where listed.
- Mounting: ground stake, base, or wall mount, plus the usable tilt and rotation range.
- Power arrangement: where the adapter and any control box must sit relative to the weather and the projection spot.
For H3860, Govee lists a stake and base. For H7073, Bob Vila’s noted limitation is restricted head movement. Treat advertised features as version-specific: verify the exact model and included accessories on the listing you intend to buy.
What to know about laser safety
Some holiday projectors use LEDs or other light sources; not every pattern projector is a laser product. If a product does use lasers, weather resistance and laser safety are separate questions. An IP rating does not establish that a beam is safe to view or use near people, animals, vehicles, or aircraft.
