GORE-TEX is not automatically warmer, more breathable, or more waterproof than every alternative. For winter gear, the finished jacket matters as much as its membrane: seam sealing, face fabric, backer, fit, ventilation, insulation, and care all shape performance. Compare complete garments for your activity rather than choosing by fabric name alone.
What the fabric name does—and does not—tell you
Waterproof-breathable outerwear is a construction, not just a membrane. A face textile sheds water, a membrane or coating blocks liquid water while allowing some moisture transfer, and an optional backer protects the inside or changes how it feels. Seams also need waterproof tape, and manufacturing quality matters. GORE-TEX says waterproof apparel depends on more than laminates and tape, including construction standards, approved components, rain testing, and certified factories. See GORE-TEX’s FAQs.

That is why a membrane label cannot by itself establish how warm a jacket is, how comfortable it feels during exertion, or how well a particular finished garment will hold up. Insulation and layering drive warmth; the shell’s pattern, vents, textile, and construction affect comfort and protection.

| System | Manufacturer-described construction | What to take from that description |
|---|---|---|
| GORE-TEX | GORE describes laminates using a membrane bonded with selected textile layers. Current membrane descriptions say most use a bi-component layer of expanded polyethylene (ePE) or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) combined with polyurethane (PU). Different 2-layer, 3-layer, and other constructions are available. GORE-TEX membrane overview. | The brand covers multiple constructions; check the specific garment’s layers, backer, face fabric, and seam sealing. |
| Pertex Shield | Pertex describes a woven face fabric, membrane, and optional backer, in 2-layer, 2.5-layer, and 3-layer forms. Its membranes may be non-porous, moving vapour by molecular diffusion, or microporous, with hydrophobic pores. Pertex Shield. | “Pertex Shield” covers different builds and membrane approaches, not one uniform jacket specification. |
| Pertex Shield Air | Pertex describes an electrospun nanofibre web with an interconnected open-pore structure that allows air through while resisting liquid water. Pertex Shield Air. | Air permeability is an expressly intended attribute, not proof of a universal performance advantage in every garment or condition. |
| The North Face FUTURELIGHT | The North Face describes a nanospun polyurethane fibre structure intended to let air and vapour permeate while maintaining waterproofness. FUTURELIGHT. | Consider the shell’s full construction and intended activity alongside the technology description. |
| The North Face DryVent | The North Face describes a semipermeable polyurethane coating that lets vapour out while blocking water. Garments are offered in 2L, 2.5L, and 3L forms with differing intended use and protection. DryVent. | Compare the particular garment’s layer build and protection claims, not just the DryVent name. |
These are manufacturers’ descriptions of their technologies and intended attributes. They are not controlled, cross-brand test results. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner among these systems.

How to compare winter shells that you might actually buy
1. Check waterproof construction
Look for whether the garment is fully seam-sealed, what the maker says about its intended use, and what face textile and membrane or coating it uses. A membrane’s reputation does not answer whether the seams and garment assembly are designed for the conditions you face.
2. Understand the layer build
Two-layer, 2.5-layer, and three-layer constructions differ in how the membrane is protected and how the interior feels. Layer count alone does not predict overall quality. Check the product description for the backer, fabric weight, and intended activity rather than treating a higher layer count as an automatic upgrade.
3. Match moisture management to your activity
For high-output activities, airflow and vapour transfer may matter more than they do for a mostly stationary day. Pertex Shield Air and FUTURELIGHT are specifically described by their makers as air-permeable, while other systems may emphasize vapour transfer through a membrane or coating. None of those labels, on its own, predicts how comfortable you will feel: exertion, temperature, humidity, layers underneath, vents, and fit all contribute.

4. Look at garment-level durability and fit
Check the shell’s fabric weight, reinforcement in likely wear areas, cut, and intended use. A membrane name alone is not evidence of a particular garment’s durability. Fit matters too: a shell should allow the layers you plan to wear without restricting movement, while its openings and vents should suit your activity.
5. Separate the shell from insulation
Waterproof-breathable shells are commonly intended to be worn over base layers or insulation. A shell may protect against wet weather, but that does not make it an insulated winter jacket or establish how warm it will be. Choose insulation and layering for the temperature and activity, then assess the shell for weather protection and moisture management.
What the waterproof rating does—and does not—prove
GORE says its laminates consistently meet a waterproofing standard of over 28,000 millimeters (mm) water column, according to its membrane page accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year. This is GORE’s stated laminate standard, not an independent result for every finished jacket and not evidence by itself that a GORE-TEX garment outperforms every competitor. Water resistance also depends on the finished garment, including seam construction and the condition of its face fabric. A single number or membrane label cannot capture every factor that affects protection in use.
DWR, wetting out, and care
Durable water repellent (DWR) is a treatment on the outer face fabric, not the waterproof membrane. It helps water bead and run off. If the face textile becomes saturated, it can feel cold or clammy even if the membrane is still blocking water; wetting out does not automatically mean the membrane has failed. GORE explains this distinction in its DWR guidance.
Follow the garment’s care label, since instructions vary. GORE advises washing with warm water and a small amount of liquid detergent, avoiding powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach. Washing and drying can help restore DWR; when water no longer beads, GORE says washing and heat may reactivate it, or reapplication may be appropriate. Its Australia DWR page describes its current PFAS-free DWR as made without intentionally added per- and polyfluorinated substances, while noting it may contain trace amounts.

Repairs and guarantees are product-specific
GORE describes its Fabric Repair Kit patches as a temporary fix for minor punctures and tears until an authorized repair center can assess the garment. Its UK guarantee terms say qualifying product issues may result in repair, replacement, or refund after evaluation. The guarantee is based on useful life rather than a fixed period, and exclusions include damage, misuse, wear and tear, and improper care. It does not apply as a blanket promise to every item with a GORE-TEX label; the black “GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY” tag identifies eligible product ranges. Check the current terms for the relevant product and region at GORE-TEX Guarantee & Returns.
Which should you choose?
- Choose by garment first. Confirm seam sealing, construction, fit, face fabric, and intended use before weighing the membrane brand.
- For demanding activity, pay close attention to vents, fit, and the maker’s airflow or vapour-transfer claims; these are not substitutes for a garment-level comparison.
- For frequent abrasion or heavy use, compare fabric weight and reinforcement rather than assuming the membrane label guarantees durability.
- For winter warmth, evaluate insulation and layering separately from waterproofness.
- For long-term performance, follow the garment’s care instructions and distinguish a saturated face fabric from a failed membrane.
No independent controlled head-to-head results establish a best overall choice across current GORE-TEX, Pertex Shield, FUTURELIGHT, and DryVent winter garments. Choose the specific shell whose construction, protection claims, fit, and activity match your use.
