Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the jacket, not just the membrane label. GORE-TEX, Patagonia H₂No and Pertex Shield are not directly equivalent technologies, and none is a universal winner. Match a specific jacket’s construction, durability, ventilation and fit to your activity and weather; the name on the fabric alone cannot tell you how the whole garment will perform.
What the three labels actually mean
These names refer to different things, so treating them as three competing membrane materials can mislead. GORE-TEX is a branded membrane and product technology, H₂No is Patagonia’s performance standard, and Pertex Shield is a fabric system.

GORE-TEX: a membrane within a product technology
GORE-TEX describes its membrane as a thin layer at the core of its product technologies. The company says most current membrane constructions use two components—ePE or ePTFE combined with polyurethane—but jackets on sale can use different generations and constructions. Check the exact model rather than assuming every GORE-TEX jacket is made alike. GORE-TEX’s membrane overview and its product FAQ describe the technology and layer configurations.
Patagonia H₂No: a test standard
Patagonia says H₂No is not a particular technology or material. It is a testing standard applied to the company’s waterproof materials and products, covering waterproofness, breathability, surface repellency and long-term durability through laboratory and field processes. Its “Killer Wash” test begins at 20,000 mm of water pressure and retests material to ensure it maintains a 10,000 mm water rating. Those are Patagonia’s own thresholds, not a cross-brand ranking or a direct comparison with another company’s test. The H₂No Performance Standard page does not state a publication year.

Pertex Shield: a fabric system
Pertex describes Shield as a system that can combine a woven face fabric, membrane and optional backer. The exact fabric and garment matter: the family name alone does not specify the full jacket construction. Pertex also says membrane breathability is dynamic, with moisture transmission rising as the wearer’s output increases. See Pertex Shield’s technology description.
Why the jacket matters more than the name
A waterproof shell is a finished garment, not just a membrane. Its face fabric, membrane, backer or lining, layer arrangement, cut and features all shape how it wears. GORE-TEX products themselves use different layer configurations; the same label therefore does not guarantee identical weight, feel or durability.

- 2.5-layer: the construction uses a protective inner print or coating rather than a full fabric lining.
- Three-layer: the membrane is bonded between the face fabric and an inner backer.
These arrangements are useful starting points, not a complete performance ranking. Compare the actual jacket’s materials and design. REI’s guide to how rain gear works explains why fabric construction and garment design affect performance.

Start with where and how you will wear it. A jacket for commuting in showers has different demands from a shell for fast hiking, frequent severe weather or alpine use. Then compare the garments on the factors below rather than assuming the membrane trademark settles the choice.

For everyday rain and commuting
Prioritize a comfortable fit, useful pockets, hood coverage and easy care. If you will mostly walk or commute in ordinary rain, those garment-level details may matter more to you than the distinction between membrane brands. This is a practical inference, not the result of a controlled comparison of the three labels.
For high-output hiking or trail use
Pay particular attention to ventilation, fit and the maker’s information about the specific garment. Heat, humidity and exertion affect how dry a jacket feels inside; no membrane can make a warm, humid interior disappear. Pertex describes breathability as dependent on the wearer’s output, and REI discusses the role of warm, humid conditions in comfort. Pit zips or other venting, if present, may be relevant to your use.

For frequent severe weather or abrasion
Inspect the face fabric, construction and garment design for the conditions you expect. Do not use the membrane name as a stand-in for whole-jacket durability: the label alone does not establish how a particular model will hold up to abrasion or repeated use.
For material or chemical preferences
Check the current material and durable water repellent (DWR) statements for the exact jacket and season. Patagonia says it added GORE-TEX ePE products to its line in Fall 2024 and describes ePE as a material that enables durable waterproof gear without perfluorinated chemicals. That brand-specific update does not establish the chemistry of every GORE-TEX product or competing product. See Patagonia’s ePE explainer and verify model-specific information.

Can you compare waterproofness and breathability numbers?
Only with care. A number is meaningful in context: the test method, conditions and units need to match. REI cautions that specifications from different brands cannot be compared spec-for-spec, so a higher published figure from one brand does not by itself prove that its jacket performs better than another’s. H₂No’s 20,000 mm initial pressure and 10,000 mm post-Killer-Wash thresholds, for example, describe Patagonia’s own test—not an apples-to-apples contest against GORE-TEX or Pertex.
When comparing models, look for the maker’s garment-level information and identify what was tested and how. If the methods or conditions are not stated or do not match, treat the figures as brand-specific context rather than a ranking.
Wet-out does not automatically mean a leak
The outer face fabric usually has a DWR finish that helps water bead and roll off. When that surface becomes saturated, the jacket can feel cold and clammy even if its waterproof membrane is still working. Wetting out is therefore not, by itself, proof of a membrane failure. GORE-TEX explains the distinction in its DWR guidance.

A quick comparison checklist
- Does the jacket’s construction suit the weather, activity and expected abrasion?
- Can you move and layer comfortably in it, and does the hood, cuff and hem design work for your use?
- Are vents or other features suitable for your exertion level?
- Are any waterproofness or breathability figures supported by comparable methods and conditions?
- Do the model’s current material and DWR statements meet your preferences?
- Can you follow the care instructions for the specific garment?
Compare specific jackets side by side; a buying guide such as REI’s rain-jacket guide, updated June 13, 2025, can help frame garment-level questions.
