A GoPro battery’s recording time depends on the camera and settings: GoPro’s published examples range from 81 minutes for HERO8 to 120 minutes for HERO10 with an Enduro battery at 1080p/30fps. If you mean how long a charged battery keeps its power while stored, GoPro’s reviewed guidance gives no general number of days or months; its MAX2 manual advises fully charging the camera before storage.
Recording time is different from stored-charge life
“How long does it hold its charge?” can mean either how long the camera records after charging or how long a charged battery retains power while unused. The available GoPro figures below concern recording runtime. They do not establish a general storage-retention period.

GoPro’s published recording-time examples
GoPro says runtime varies by camera and that higher resolutions and frame rates use more battery. These manufacturer-reported examples come from different models and settings, so they are not a head-to-head test or a guarantee for every camera.

GoPro also published HERO10 Enduro results at two temperatures. At 14°F (-10°C), its examples were 56 minutes at 5.3K/60fps, 50 minutes at 4K/120fps, 76 minutes at 4K/60fps, and 115 minutes at 1080p/30fps. At 77°F (25°C), the reported runtimes were 60, 51, 71, and 120 minutes at those respective settings. GoPro described the 60-minute 5.3K/60fps result at 77°F (25°C) as a 28% improvement over the standard battery. These are GoPro’s stated conditions for HERO10 Enduro, not estimates for other models or every use.

What changes how long a GoPro records?
Resolution and frame rate
Higher resolution and frame rates increase power use, according to GoPro. If longer runtime matters more than image detail or motion smoothness, try lowering one or both settings.
Screen, wireless use, and idle time
GoPro’s MAX2 manual recommends using the screensaver, lowering screen brightness, turning off wireless connections when they are not needed, using QuikCapture, and setting Auto Power Off. These are optimization suggestions, not promises of a fixed number of additional minutes; the manual does not quantify a universal gain.

Temperature and battery age
GoPro warns that cold reduces battery capacity and affects older batteries more. Its MAX2 manual also says extreme heat or cold may temporarily shorten battery life or affect camera operation. Avoid dramatic temperature or humidity changes.
How long does a charged GoPro battery last in storage?
GoPro’s reviewed storage guidance does not state a general number of days or months that a charged battery will retain power. Its MAX2 manual’s advice is: “Fully charge your camera before storing it away to help maximize battery life.” The manual also says not to store a battery with metal objects that could contact its terminals.

Charging while recording and charging time
GoPro’s June 23, 2022 guide gives broad historical examples of about two hours with a GoPro Dual Battery Charger and around four hours when charging through another device, such as a laptop. Charging time varies by power source, and those examples are not exact estimates for every current camera or charger.
The MAX2 manual says the battery does not charge while the camera is recording, even when connected to a power source; charging resumes when recording stops. The camera is not waterproof while its door is open for charging. Use an agency-approved power supply that meets local requirements.

When a spare battery or charger makes sense
If you need more recording time, a compatible spare battery is the most direct option. A dual charger can charge multiple compatible batteries, while an external battery grip may suit supported setups. Compatibility depends on camera generation: check the exact camera model and battery before buying. GoPro’s catalog lists Enduro batteries and dual chargers for named camera families; its HERO9/HERO10 battery listing describes a 1720mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery for those models. Product listings and availability can change.
- For a replacement or battery rotation: look for a spare that matches your exact camera.
- For charging multiple compatible batteries: check whether a dual charger supports your battery generation.
- For an extended supported setup: verify that an external grip works with your camera and intended configuration.
When evaluating runtime claims, compare only figures for the same camera, settings, and conditions. The published examples above use different models and configurations and should not be treated as directly comparable test results.
