Improve a TeamViewer Connection: Fix Lag, Frozen Screens, and Failed Connections

The right fix depends on what “connection problem” means. If a remote session connects but feels slow, choose Optimize speed in the session’s Quality control. If the remote picture is stale, use Refresh screen. If TeamViewer cannot connect and shows “Not ready. Please check your connection,” troubleshoot internet access and TeamViewer reachability instead.

If the session connects but feels sluggish

Open the session toolbar’s Quality control and select Optimize speed. This setting favors fluidity and responsive control over graphic quality, so the remote image may look less detailed. Toolbar placement and available choices can differ by platform and session context.

Choose a quality mode for the work

Setting What it favors Trade-off
Optimize speed Fluidity and responsive control Graphic quality may be reduced
Auto select A balance between speed and quality Does not prioritize either as strongly as its dedicated setting
Optimize quality A more accurate visual display Connection fluidity may be reduced

For tasks where cursor response and movement matter most, start with Optimize speed. For work that depends on seeing fine visual detail, compare Optimize quality with Auto select. These modes are a responsiveness-versus-fidelity choice, not a universal performance ranking.

Custom settings

TeamViewer also provides custom controls for items such as color, quality, fast video streaming, and GUI animations. An application-compatibility option is available in some contexts, but it reduces performance; avoid enabling it as a general speed fix.

If the remote screen looks frozen or out of date

Choose Refresh screen from the session toolbar. It asks TeamViewer to update the graphics display and may help if the remote picture appears frozen or the remote computer is running many tasks. A refreshed image is a display update; it does not establish that a network bottleneck has been fixed.

If TeamViewer cannot establish a connection

For the alert “Not ready. Please check your connection,” work through these checks in order. Port guidance here applies to TeamViewer’s reported inability to reach the internet, not as a blanket firewall change for every user.

  1. Check general internet access. Open a webpage or another web application on the device running TeamViewer. If that also fails, resolve the device’s internet connection first.
  2. Check TeamViewer’s outbound reachability. If TeamViewer cannot reach the internet, its troubleshooting guidance says to allow outbound port 5938. If you manage a firewall, confirm whether that outbound traffic is blocked.
  3. Restart after a recent failure. If TeamViewer worked only minutes earlier, exit and restart the app. If needed, reboot the device.
  4. Check service status. A TeamViewer service issue can prevent a connection even when the local internet is working.

How to tell whether bandwidth is part of the problem

During an active session, open Connection Information and inspect the traffic coming to and going from the device. The reading can help you estimate usage for that particular connection. Traffic varies with what you do in the session, the devices involved, and the network; there is no universal minimum speed established by this guidance.

Use the measurement while reproducing the slow behavior, and interpret it in the context of the activity. A session’s traffic during a mostly static desktop view may not represent traffic during a different task.

Attended support and unattended access are different setup cases

For attended support, TeamViewer’s FAQ describes creating a session and sharing a session link. For unattended access, it describes installing TeamViewer Host. The FAQ characterizes session links as safer and easier than sharing passwords. These are ways to arrange access, not settings that make an established session faster.

A practical order for troubleshooting

  • Slow response in a connected session: try Optimize speed, then compare other quality modes if visual accuracy is more important.
  • Frozen or stale image: use Refresh screen to request a graphics update.
  • Unable to connect: verify general internet access, investigate outbound port 5938 if TeamViewer cannot reach the internet, restart after a recent failure, and check service status.
  • Unsure about traffic: inspect Connection Information during the session rather than assuming one bandwidth target fits every setup.
