Yes, Googlebook bootloaders can be unlocked, and Google documents the process in its own Help Center. The Magisk part is less settled. Magisk developer John Wu has reportedly announced that Magisk is coming to Googlebook, but code and instructions had not been confirmed as released when this was written (October 7, 2026).
What Google officially says about unlocking
Google’s Help Center says most users don’t need to unlock their Googlebook’s bootloader. It still provides a supported procedure for those who do. It also warns that unlocking erases all data on the device and disables device security. Modifications Google doesn’t support can cause hardware, software or security problems, and may void your warranty.

Google does not say anything about Magisk or root in that guidance. Unlocking the bootloader is supported. Rooting is not.
How to unlock a Googlebook bootloader
Back up anything you want to keep first. The unlock factory-resets the machine.

What the Magisk news actually is
Android Authority reported on October 5, 2026 that John Wu, Magisk’s developer (the outlet identifies him as a Google employee), posted: “Magisk on Googlebook. New code and instructions will come in the following days.” The report links to an X post that returned an access error when checked, so the quote is best treated as reported by Android Authority rather than independently confirmed.
That is a statement of intent. Nothing available shows that:

Wait for the official Magisk instructions before changing anything beyond the unlock. Those instructions will likely depend on model, firmware build and recovery behavior. Don’t assume steps from phones carry over.

Why this matters
Googlebook is Google’s new laptop category. It combines Android technology with ChromeOS and the browser experience, and Google announced it on May 12, 2026. Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo are named as makers of the first devices. Google’s enterprise documentation describes Googlebook OS as built on the Android tech stack. That helps explain why Android-style bootloader unlocking and an Android tool like Magisk are even in the conversation, which is unusual for laptops.

- Data loss: everything on the device is erased.
- Security: Google states that unlocking disables device security.
- Warranty: unsupported modifications may void it. Check your manufacturer’s terms.
- Unknown compatibility: because Magisk support is unconfirmed, unlocking now gains you little beyond readiness.
The Bottom Line
Unlocking is officially documented, but it wipes the device and removes security protections. Magisk on Googlebook is only a reported promise so far. Unless you have a specific reason, wait for released code and instructions before unlocking.
