Googlebook is Google’s announced premium laptop category built on Android technology with desktop foundations from ChromeOS; Chromebook remains Google’s cloud-first laptop category. The practical shift Google emphasizes is closer Android-phone integration, Gemini features and premium partner-made hardware. Google’s announcements do not establish that Googlebook replaces Chromebook, and they are not independent tests of performance or compatibility.
What is Googlebook?
Google describes Googlebook as a new laptop category combining an Android technology stack with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. It also integrates the Play Store and puts Gemini features at the center of the experience. Google frames Chromebook differently: the company says it introduced Chromebook more than 15 years ago as a laptop for a cloud-first world. Those are Google’s product descriptions, not a technical teardown showing that the operating systems are identical. Google’s introduction to Googlebook and its hardware overview explain the positioning.

Does Googlebook work with Android phones?
Phone continuity is one of Google’s central Googlebook claims. The company says setup can transfer Android phone settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages, with the transfer protected by end-to-end encryption. Google also describes features for resuming tasks from a phone, opening phone files and photos, and using phone apps in desktop windows.

What AI and work features has Google announced?
Google’s announced features extend beyond phone integration. Magic Pointer is described as bringing Gemini to on-screen content after a cursor gesture; Google says it activates only when summoned and can be turned off. Rambler is intended to organize spoken notes, while Create My Widget generates widgets from natural-language descriptions. Google’s developer story also names Antigravity and a Linux terminal.

What hardware and specifications has Google announced?
Google says the first Googlebook devices are made by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. It gives broad descriptions rather than complete model specifications: Acer’s device is presented as a convertible, ASUS’s as a 2.2-pound travel laptop, Dell’s as a balanced design, HP’s as aesthetics-led and Lenovo’s as a 15-inch productivity model. Those characterizations are Google’s; confirm dimensions, ports and configurations in the manufacturer’s listing before comparing laptops.

The announced processor choices are Intel Core Ultra Series 3 or Snapdragon X Elite. Google says the portfolio starts at 16GB of memory, with some configurations reaching 32GB, and cites NPU capability of over 45 TOPS for launch processors; that figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement.
Google reports up to 14 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of web browsing. These are workload-dependent manufacturer figures, not a single guaranteed battery-life result for every model. The pre-order announcement also states a general claim of up to 14 hours; actual endurance depends on configuration and use. Google’s hardware overview and pre-order announcement list the claims.

What does Google say about security, updates and included services?
Google says Googlebook shares ChromeOS security architecture, including a Titan hardware root of trust, defense-in-depth design and on-device malware detection. It also describes an isolated Linux environment running on a pKVM hypervisor. These are manufacturer statements, not an independent security certification.
Google says Googlebook OS will receive regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years. Treat that as Google’s stated maximum and check the support terms for the exact model rather than assuming every device receives identical coverage. The company also announced 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage and higher Gemini usage limits, plus three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and other benefits. Offer terms and eligibility can vary; confirm what is included with the local device listing. Google’s preorder announcement and hardware overview state these terms.
Which should you choose?
- Consider Googlebook if you want the Android-phone continuity Google describes, are interested in Gemini-centered workflows, and find a specific partner model whose configuration and local support terms fit your needs.
- Consider a Chromebook if a Chromebook model already meets your needs and you do not need the Googlebook features described here. Google has not established that the new category replaces Chromebook.
- Wait for model-specific evidence if your decision depends on real-world battery life, app compatibility, performance or a direct comparison. The cited announcements do not provide independent tests or a complete model-by-model comparison.
A promotional post says actor and producer Henry Cavill plans to build a video game with Google in November 2026. That is a future promotional project announcement, not a completed review or benchmark. Google’s September 29, 2026 post describes the plan.
