Start with your phone, country, and exact bank card. Those determine whether either wallet will work. For a non-Samsung Android phone, Google Wallet is the practical choice, subject to device and issuer support. On a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Wallet may suit you better if you want a supported Samsung integration such as Samsung Pass, a digital key, transit, or tickets. Neither wallet supports every card or feature everywhere.
How to choose between Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet
Use this order to avoid choosing based on a feature your phone, bank, or local provider does not support:

- Check your phone and region. Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later and current Google Play Services, along with security-compliant software. Samsung Wallet is for compatible Galaxy devices; support varies by model, country or region, carrier, and firmware. See Google’s device requirements and Samsung’s US FAQ.
- Check the exact card. Search for your issuing bank and specific card in the wallet’s country-specific support information, or ask the bank. A contactless symbol on a physical card does not guarantee Google Wallet support, and Samsung notes that some cards from participating banks are not supported. - Check the feature you actually need. Confirm support for your local transit system, ticket or boarding pass provider, ID issuer, or digital key. A feature listed by a wallet may still be limited to particular partners, countries, or phone models.
- Choose the wallet that passes those checks. If both work, use Google Wallet for a cross-brand Android option; choose Samsung Wallet on a compatible Galaxy if its Samsung-specific features matter to you.
What each wallet is best for

Feature availability is regional and partner-dependent. Google’s country and feature guidance describes differences by country, device, and partner. Samsung’s US feature page also makes availability dependent on supported partners and compatible devices.
Does Samsung Wallet work on any Android phone?
No. Samsung Wallet is intended for compatible Galaxy devices, not Android phones in general. Samsung’s US FAQ describes Android 9 or later for its listed support, but that minimum does not mean every Galaxy model or every Wallet feature is supported. Check the exact phone and feature in Samsung’s device compatibility matrix; the matrix notes, for example, that digital-key registration is restricted to supported models.

If you use another Android brand, Google Wallet is the relevant option to check, provided your phone meets Google’s software and security requirements.
Will your bank card work with either wallet?
Possibly, but the card network logo or ability to tap the physical card is not enough to establish support. Google says the card issuer determines whether a card can be used, and explicitly warns that contactless support on the physical card does not guarantee compatibility with Google Wallet. Samsung likewise cautions that some cards from participating banks may not be supported.

Verify the exact issuing bank and card for your country before changing wallets. Google’s supported payment methods information is country-specific; Samsung’s US guidance recommends checking with the bank when a card is not supported.
What you need for tap-to-pay
Google Wallet
Google’s tap-to-pay guidance requires NFC, a supported payment method, a screen lock, security-compliant phone software, and Google Pay selected as the default payment app. Google also says Android 9 or later and current Google Play Services are needed to download Wallet. Samsung Wallet
Samsung’s setup guidance says to enable NFC and select Samsung Wallet/Samsung Pay as the default contactless payment service. The label and available settings can vary by device and software; Samsung’s US instructions are at its default payment service page.

The available official descriptions do not establish a head-to-head security winner. Google’s setup requirements include a screen lock and software that meets its security requirements. Samsung describes encryption, tokenization, and Knox protections in its security guidance. Those are vendor explanations, not an independent comparative test, so they do not support a claim that one wallet is categorically safer.
