If Google Wallet tap to pay fails, check three separate things first: NFC must be on, Google Wallet must be Android’s default contactless payment app, and the card you intend to use must be ready for tap to pay. Then check the phone’s security status and how you’re holding it to the reader. A declined or suspended card may need attention from your bank rather than a change to your phone.
1. Turn on NFC and set Google Wallet as the payment app
NFC is the short-range wireless connection your phone uses to communicate with a contactless reader. Google’s instruction is to make sure NFC is enabled and set up correctly before using Wallet. Google Wallet Help: Turn on near field communication (NFC)

- Open your Android phone’s Settings and search for “NFC.” Turn NFC on if it is off.
- Open the NFC or contactless payment settings, then choose Google Wallet as the default payment app.
Settings names and menu paths vary by device, so searching Settings is often the quickest route. If your phone has no NFC setting or does not support NFC, it cannot make a contactless payment through Wallet.

2. Confirm the right card is ready in Wallet
Android’s default payment app and Google Wallet’s default card are different settings. The Android setting chooses which app handles a tap; the Wallet setting chooses which card that app presents. Check both when more than one payment method is available.

Check the card’s status
Open Google Wallet and inspect the card. If Wallet says it is not set up, follow the in-app steps and complete any verification. If it says Card suspended, contact the bank that issued it. Google’s guide covers setting up a phone for tap to pay and common card-status issues: Tap to pay with your phone.
Choose the default card
Google says the first payment method you add becomes the default for contactless payments. To use another card, open that card’s details in Wallet and select Make default for tap to pay. See Change your default payment method in the Google Wallet app.

3. Check the phone’s lock, software and eligibility
Set a screen lock and unlock the phone before paying. Google requires a device that meets its security requirements and recommends checking whether it is Play Protect certified. Rooting, an unlocked bootloader, custom ROMs, developer or uncertified software can prevent tap to pay. Google Wallet does not support work profiles.
- Check that your device is Play Protect certified and is running supported, unmodified software.
- Keep Google Play Services and Google Wallet up to date. Google’s download guidance requires Android 9 or higher for the phone app; other eligibility requirements still apply.
- Check that Wallet and your card are supported in your country or region. Availability depends on the supported card and issuer, not just the phone.
Google’s requirements and troubleshooting guidance are detailed in Tap to pay with your phone and Download the Google Wallet app. If tap to pay stopped working after a software update, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer.

4. Retry the tap with the reader in mind
Once settings and card status look right, make another attempt with the phone unlocked. NFC antennas are not in the same place on every handset, so adjust the phone’s position rather than assuming the reader is directly behind its center.
- Look for the contactless-payment symbol on the terminal, or ask the cashier whether it accepts mobile payments.
- Hold the unlocked phone close to the reader for a few seconds. If it does not respond, try moving the top or middle of the phone over the reader.
- If you use a thick case, remove it for the retry in case it is interfering with the connection.
- If the terminal asks you to swipe or insert after a tap attempt, follow its reset instructions or ask the cashier to reset it, then try again with the phone unlocked.
Moving the phone away too quickly, holding it too far from the reader, or a thick case can interrupt NFC communication. Google’s transaction guidance is at Fix problems with contactless transactions.

5. Ask the issuer about card setup or declines
A card can work for contactless payments as a physical card and still be incompatible with Google Wallet. Google explicitly cautions that physical-card contactless support does not guarantee Wallet compatibility. Check Google’s supported payment-method guidance for your region, and confirm with your bank that it supports adding that card to Wallet.
