For secure in-store payments, Google Wallet requires a device screen lock and verification using a supported unlock method. Check that setting first, understand the transit-payment exception, and know how to lock or erase a phone if it goes missing.
Set a screen lock that Wallet can verify
Google says a screen lock is required to make secure payments with Google Wallet. Its documented Android route is Settings → Security → Device unlock → Screen lock. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer; if yours differs, consult your phone maker’s instructions. Google’s screen-lock setup guide has the Wallet requirement.

For payment verification, Google lists PIN, pattern, password, and Class 3 biometric unlock as supported methods. Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics, as well as Smart Unlock and Knock to Unlock, are not supported for this purpose. If your biometric method is unsupported, use a PIN, pattern, or password instead. Verification can be requested again after it times out, so do not assume every payment will prompt in exactly the same way. See Google’s purchase-verification guidance.

Google Wallet has a transit-only option that can let you pay without unlocking your phone. In Wallet, open Profile picture or account → Wallet settings → Security → Verification settings → Transit payments, then turn off Verification required. Labels may vary between devices or app versions.

This is a convenience trade-off, not a general switch for contactless payments: other payments still require screen-lock verification, and some transit systems do not support skipping verification. Keep the setting on if you prefer to require verification for transit taps too. Google explains the option and its limits in its payment-verification help.
Know what to do if your phone is lost or stolen
Use Google’s Find and secure a lost Android device flow to locate, lock, or erase the phone. Google says a locked device cannot be used for in-store purchases because verification is required; erasing the device removes its payment information. These actions address the Wallet information on that phone, but the guidance does not say that they cancel the underlying bank card.

If you spot a charge you do not recognize, contact the relevant payment provider promptly. Google advises reporting unauthorized charges within 120 days of the transaction date; that is Google’s guidance, not a universal issuer deadline or legal rule. A screen lock is only one part of device readiness. Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to check that the phone supports NFC, Google Wallet is the default payment app, the device meets security requirements, and the phone is unlocked before payment. Use your bank’s instructions to verify a newly added card
If Wallet asks you to verify a card, the verification code comes from the bank, not Google Wallet. The available verification methods can vary by country or region. Follow the in-app instructions, and contact the card issuer if a code does not arrive or fails. Google’s card-verification guide explains the process.
