Google Wallet Not Working on Your Pixel? 4 Ways to Fix Tap to Pay

Four checks for Pixel tap-to-pay failures, from NFC settings and card verification to device security and the store’s reader.

If Google Wallet won’t pay when you tap your Pixel, check four layers: NFC and the default payment app, card setup, device security, and the phone’s interaction with the reader. A failed tap isn’t always a phone fault—it can also come from the card issuer or the store’s terminal.

1. Check NFC and the default payment app

Google Wallet needs NFC enabled, and it must be selected as the default contactless payment app. Menu names can vary by Android version; the quickest route is to search Settings for “NFC.”

  1. Open Settings and search for “NFC,” or go to Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC.
  2. Turn on Use NFC.
  3. Open Contactless payments and select Google Wallet as the payment default.

If there is no NFC setting, the Pixel does not have NFC and cannot make contactless payments. See Google’s Pixel instructions for contactless payments.

2. Check the card’s setup and issuer support

In Google Wallet, open the payment setup area and check the status shown above the card. Complete any setup or bank verification prompt. If Wallet says the card is suspended, contact the issuing bank.

A physical card’s ability to tap does not establish that the bank supports using that card for Google Wallet contactless payments. Availability also depends on the supported country and card. Check Google’s card setup and eligibility guidance and Wallet’s instructions for paying with a phone.

3. Verify the screen lock and device security

Set a supported screen lock and use it to verify the payment when prompted. Google Wallet can block in-store payments if the device does not meet its security requirements. Rooting, a custom ROM, an unlocked bootloader, or uncertified or modified software may be the cause; check Play Protect certification as part of troubleshooting.

On Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, Face Unlock is not supported for tap-to-pay verification. Use a supported screen-lock method instead. If payments worked before and stopped after a software update, Google advises contacting the device manufacturer. See Google’s verification guidance and Wallet’s device and app requirements.

4. Retry the tap and check the reader

Unlock the phone, hold it close to the contactless reader for a few seconds, and try another orientation. The NFC antenna may be near the top or bottom of the phone. During testing, remove a thick case or wallet-style case with payment cards; a case or nearby NFC chip can interfere.

If Wallet displays a check mark but the cashier says the payment failed, try another reader and ask whether the store accepts mobile payments. Google’s guidance for tap-to-pay transaction problems and Pixel contactless payments covers reader position and case interference.

Use the symptom to choose the next step

  • “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet” or no NFC option: Enable NFC if the setting exists. If the Pixel has no NFC setting, it cannot make contactless payments.
  • “Card not set up” or a verification prompt: Finish Wallet setup and any issuer verification.
  • “Card suspended” or a decline: Contact the bank; the issuer may be declining or restricting the transaction.
  • “Phone isn’t certified” or a security error: Check Play Protect certification and whether the phone is rooted, modified, running a custom ROM, or has an unlocked bootloader. If the problem began after an update, contact the manufacturer.
  • The terminal asks for chip or swipe after a tap: This can be a security fallback or a mismatch between the card network and the contactless networks the terminal accepts. Unlock and verify the phone, then ask the cashier for help or use another payment method.
  • The phone asks for a PIN: Enter the Android screen-lock PIN on the phone. Do not enter the card PIN on the terminal in response to a PIN prompt on the phone.
  • Wallet crashes or will not open: Restart the Pixel and check for Android updates, then try again.

Who to contact if it still fails

Match the next step to the failing part of the payment: ask the bank about a suspended card, issuer verification, or decline; ask the retailer to check its reader or whether it accepts mobile payments; contact the device manufacturer about certification or an update-related problem. If the issue is limited to Wallet opening or loading, restart the phone and check Android updates first.
