Google Wallet can do more than store payment cards: depending on your country, issuer and device, it can also hold tickets, transit and boarding passes, loyalty and gift cards, some IDs and health passes, and digital keys. These ten tips make eligible items easier to add and use, while helping you avoid common transit, transfer and privacy surprises.
1. Turn on Gmail auto-save for eligible passes
Wallet can save some loyalty cards, event tickets, train tickets and boarding passes from Gmail. On the Google Account you use with Wallet, enable both Smart features and personalization in other Google products and Wallet’s Auto save passes setting. Auto-save is limited to eligible items and configured accounts; it does not guarantee every confirmation email will create a pass. Google explains which items can be added to Wallet.

2. Use the issuer’s Add to Google Wallet button
When a ticket, loyalty card or other supported item offers an Add to Google Wallet button in an issuer’s app, website or message, use that route. The issuer’s button can add an eligible pass directly to Wallet. You can also add supported item types from within the Wallet app; what is available depends on the item, issuer and location. See Google’s instructions for adding items.

3. Reorder cards and passes you use most
Put frequently used items where they are quicker to reach. In Wallet, use Edit card order to change the order of payment cards. For passes, touch and hold one, then drag it to a new position. This changes how items are arranged in Wallet; it does not change which payment card is the default.

4. Check recent activity from a payment card
Open a payment card in Wallet and select View more transactions to see recent tap-to-pay activity available there. This is a convenient check, not necessarily a complete account statement. Google directs American Express users in the United States to their statement or the American Express app for full transaction history. Google’s Wallet overview describes the activity view.
5. Let linked passes appear automatically—or turn that off
An issuer can link related passes that are not private, allowing them to appear together in Wallet. You cannot create these links yourself. To control whether linked passes are added automatically, open your Wallet profile menu and look for Automatically add linked passes. The setting only governs issuer-linked passes that meet Wallet’s requirements. Google explains linked passes and why one might be missing.

6. Try tapping for transit without opening Wallet
Where the transit system supports it, you may be able to tap your phone at the reader without waking it or opening Wallet. Some systems instead require the phone to be unlocked and the relevant pass selected. Watch the reader for its confirmation and follow any instructions from transit staff; the local system determines the accepted procedure. Check Google’s transit guidance and your agency’s rules.

In participating regions, Transit Insights can show trips, activity, savings and progress toward a discount or fare cap. It is an information card, not a payment method: you need to use the linked payment card for the eligible transit travel. The transit agency sets the fare rules, and availability depends on the participating system. If you change which card is linked, use the Transit Insights card’s controls to select the other eligible payment card. Google describes Transit Insights and its limits.

8. Set a default card on a compatible watch for express pay
Paying from a watch is separate from paying with your phone. Google Wallet watch payments require NFC, Wear OS 2.0 or later, a supported card and a supported region. To use express pay where offered, add the supported card to Wallet on the watch and set it as the default payment card. Express-pay eligibility has additional restrictions and may vary by watch or rollout, so check the requirements for your device, card and country before relying on it. Review Google Wallet’s smartwatch requirements.
9. Check which payment source a transit tap will use on your watch
For transit express pay, an existing transit pass on the watch takes precedence over the default payment card. If you intend to pay with a bank card, check whether a transit pass is present and which payment method the agency accepts. There are system-specific exceptions: in San Francisco, a Clipper pass requires opening Wallet on the watch before tapping. Transit behavior is set by the system and may differ elsewhere. Google lists watch and transit-pass conditions.

10. Check transfer and pass-data settings before switching devices
Do not assume every Wallet item will move in the same way when you change phones, reset a device or switch accounts. Some payment cards and passes are stored on the device; some loyalty or gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes may be associated with your Google Account and appear across devices. Transit passes have their own transfer rules, which vary by provider. Removing the Wallet app or clearing its data can also remove a stored transit pass, so check the agency’s recovery or transfer process first. Google notes that in the documented multi-use transit-pass case, the pass can be tapped again after 10 minutes; that timing is not a universal transit rule. Read Google’s guidance on transferring passes and payment cards.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I factory reset my phone?
A reset can remove items stored on the device, and not every payment card or pass automatically returns on a new device. Account-linked items may appear again, while transit passes follow the transit provider’s transfer and recovery rules. Check those rules before resetting. Google’s transfer guidance explains the differences.
Why can’t I find linked passes?
An issuer must link eligible passes, and private passes are not treated as linkable passes. You cannot create the relationship yourself. Confirm the issuer supports linked passes and review the Automatically add linked passes setting. See Google’s linked-pass help.
