Fix Windows 10/11 Startup Repair Loops Without Losing Your Files

The “Your PC Did Not Start Correctly” screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with Startup Repair, then choose a recovery option based on the likely cause and the files or settings you need to preserve.

The “Your PC Did Not Start Correctly” screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with Windows Recovery Environment’s Startup Repair; if it cannot help, choose the next recovery option based on what changed and what you need to preserve. Before using recovery tools, have your BitLocker recovery key ready if the drive is encrypted.

What the error means—and what to try first

Windows has failed to start normally and has opened its recovery tools. The cause could be a damaged boot configuration, an incompatible driver, a recent update, or another startup problem. The message alone does not establish that the drive or another hardware component has failed.

Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a built-in Windows recovery tool that helps fix issues preventing the operating system from starting.” In Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart. Startup Repair scans for common startup problems, including missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. If it cannot repair the problem, Microsoft says it provides a report of the issues found. Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions explain the tool.

Startup Repair is not a guaranteed fix for every cause of a loop. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, or the computer returns to the same screen, use the recovery options below rather than repeating the same attempt indefinitely.

How to reach WinRE when Windows keeps returning to the error

WinRE is Windows’ built-in set of tools for troubleshooting and repairing common system problems. If the recovery screen is already open, choose Advanced options. If Windows cannot reach it on its own, Microsoft documents this manual route:

  1. Turn on the PC and wait for the Windows logo.
  2. Hold the power button until the PC shuts down.
  3. Repeat the interrupted start once more. On the third start, Windows should show Automatic Repair; select Advanced options.

This deliberately interrupts startup twice. Use it only to reach recovery, and follow the device maker’s guidance if it gives a different procedure.

If WinRE is unavailable and you do not have a recovery drive or repair disc, create Windows installation media on another working PC with Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. Start the affected PC from that media, select Repair my PC, then enter WinRE. You may need to change the boot order using the computer manufacturer’s instructions. Check Microsoft’s current media-creation requirements before preparing a USB drive; its required capacity and compatibility details can change. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment instructions.

Choose the recovery option that fits what happened

Once you can open Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose based on the likely trigger and the changes you can accept. The options below differ in scope; a tool that rolls back Windows changes is not the same as reinstalling the operating system.

Option When it may fit Effect on files, apps, and settings Availability or requirement
Startup Repair Windows will not start and the cause may be a common startup fault. Attempts repairs; it is not a reset or reinstall. In WinRE. A BitLocker recovery key may be required.
Uninstall Updates The problem began after a recent Windows update. Microsoft says this action does not affect files or apps. In WinRE, under Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
System Restore A restore point exists and a recent system change may be responsible. Rolls back system files and settings, not personal files; it can affect recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings. Available on Windows 10 and Windows 11; requires a usable restore point.
Quick Machine Recovery A repeated startup failure is associated with a known widespread issue and a Microsoft-provided fix is available. Applies a fix through Windows Update from WinRE; does not reset the PC or affect files, apps, or settings. Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, when enabled. Enabled by default on Home; Pro and Enterprise devices may require an administrator to enable it.
Reset this PC Less disruptive recovery options have not resolved the problem. Offers a choice to keep or remove personal files; apps and settings are removed. Available through Windows recovery options; review the chosen reset option before proceeding.
Reinstall Windows from installation media Windows needs reinstalling, or built-in recovery is unavailable. Setup can offer to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or remove everything. A clean installation removes personal files, apps, and settings. Requires installation media. A PC maker’s recovery media may include device-specific drivers and factory apps not included in generic Microsoft media.

If the loop began after an update

In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. This is the most directly relevant option when the timing points to a recent update. Microsoft says uninstalling a recent update may fix a problem that began after it and does not affect files or apps.

If a previous system state may be more stable

System Restore returns system files and settings to an available restore point without rolling back personal files. It may remove or undo changes from recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings. Review the restore point and its affected items if Windows shows them before confirming.

If the PC meets the Quick Machine Recovery conditions

Quick Machine Recovery is for repeated startup failures tied to a known, widespread issue—not a general-purpose repair for every loop. On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, when enabled, it can connect through WinRE to Windows Update and apply a Microsoft-provided fix automatically. Microsoft says it is enabled by default on Windows 11 Home; an administrator may need to enable it on Pro or Enterprise devices.

Protect access to an encrypted PC

BitLocker encryption can change what you need before recovery can proceed. Microsoft says the recovery key is needed to complete Startup Repair on an encrypted device and is required for most WinRE options. If Windows asks for the key, find it before continuing; without it, you may be unable to use the selected recovery tool.

When boot-repair commands are appropriate

Command-line repair is a specialized step, not a universal response to the “Your PC Did Not Start Correctly” message. Microsoft Learn’s boot-issues guidance associates missing or corrupt BCD, boot files, MBR, boot sector, or Bootmgr with boot-loader-phase problems. It documents commands such as BOOTREC /FIXMBR, BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, Bootrec /ScanOS, and a BCD rebuild sequence for relevant boot-code or BCD problems.

Do not run a sequence of boot commands simply because Startup Repair failed. These commands change boot configuration, and Microsoft notes that Fixmbr may not resolve corruption affecting the partition table. WinRE drive letters can also differ from those used during normal Windows operation. Match any command to a specific diagnosis and follow the scenario-specific instructions in Microsoft Learn’s Windows startup issues troubleshooting guide. It also documents the Startup Repair log location as %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt.

That guide treats other failures differently: for certain kernel-phase problems, it recommends trying Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking and reviewing Event Viewer if either starts. It also covers pending-update rollback and offline system-file checks for particular symptoms. Those paths depend on the failure and environment; they are not interchangeable general fixes.

Reset or reinstall only after reviewing the data consequences

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and lets you choose whether to keep or remove personal files, but apps and settings are removed. Reinstalling from installation media has different choices: setup may preserve personal files and apps, preserve personal files only, or remove everything. A clean installation removes personal files, apps, and settings.

Read the option labels carefully before confirming, and do not assume “reinstall” means your files will be preserved. If device-specific drivers or factory applications matter, Microsoft recommends checking with the PC maker about recovery media; an OEM recovery image may include items absent from generic Microsoft installation media.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; whether a particular PC is eligible depends on that device. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery information for recovery guidance and its current support context.
