A universal remote is usually the more flexible choice for an older TV—but only if the remote supports that exact TV model. A Google TV voice remote is more convenient if you already use a compatible Google TV streamer and the TV responds to its power, volume and input controls. The set’s age alone can’t tell you which remote will work; check model compatibility and test the buttons you need before relying on either one.
How to choose between a Google TV remote and a universal remote
The key difference is what each remote is designed to control. A Google TV voice remote primarily operates its streaming device, with configurable TV controls. A universal remote is intended to control a TV and, depending on the model, other devices as well. Neither label guarantees compatibility with every older television.

Will a Google TV remote work with an old TV?
It might, but age alone does not establish compatibility. Google TV and Chromecast voice remotes can be configured to control TV power, volume and input, but Google warns that some device models will not work for each function. A remote might handle one control and fail at another.
Configure and test the TV controls
- On the Google streaming device, open Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons.
- Choose the device type and brand, then configure power, volume or input as needed.
- Test each function during setup. Confirm that the TV responds to the buttons you intend to use.
If the remote navigates the Google TV interface but cannot turn the TV on or off or change its volume, Google says the problem is probably related to IR. Confirm the streamer is on the TV’s selected input and review the configured remote-button settings; then reconfigure the affected control. For IR, check that the remote has a clear line of sight to the TV’s sensor.

Could HDMI-CEC help?
CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is another possible control path over HDMI. Google explains that CEC lets HDMI devices be controlled with one remote; with compatible equipment, it can switch the TV input, and some TVs can power on. The TV and connected setup must support the behavior. Google also says the streaming device needs wall-outlet power for this behavior, rather than power from the TV’s USB port.
CEC settings may be listed under a brand-specific name rather than “CEC.” Common names include Anynet+ (Samsung), Aquos Link (Sharp), BRAVIA Link or BRAVIA Sync (Sony), CE-Link or Regza Link (Toshiba), SimpLink (LG), HDAVI Control or VIERA Link (Panasonic), and EasyLink (Philips). The label and available controls vary by TV.

When a universal remote is the better choice
Choose a universal remote when you want to control the TV and other devices with one handset, or when you need a TV-control option beyond the Google streamer remote. First identify the TV’s exact model, then check the compatibility list or code list for the specific remote you are considering. A brand match by itself is not proof that the model or every function is supported.

Setup varies: a remote may ask you to enter a code, try codes in sequence, run an automatic search, use an app or learn commands from another remote. Follow the instructions for that model and test the controls you actually need—such as power, volume, mute, input, channels and menu. TCL’s support guidance, for example, recommends trying another setup code if the first does not work; if the available setup methods fail, the remote may not be fully compatible.

A concrete example: One For All URC7935
The One For All URC7935 is an example of a universal remote designed for a streamer as well as TV power, volume, mute and input. One For All provides a compatibility list and code-based setup: enter the code listed for the TV brand, test power or mute, and try another listed code if the first does not work. The manufacturer says its compatibility resources cover nearly 1,500 models of streaming boxes, TVs and audio devices; that is a manufacturer-stated total, not an independent test or a count limited to older TVs. Check the One For All compatibility list for your exact TV model rather than assuming the broad coverage claim guarantees a match.
Even if a universal remote operates basic TV controls, it may not reproduce platform-specific voice commands, app shortcuts, Bluetooth functions or special menus. Check the remote’s supported functions as well as its model list.

What to do if neither remote controls the TV
If the Google TV remote fails, check its configured buttons and, where relevant, CEC support and settings. If a universal remote fails, verify the exact code and compatibility information for the TV model, then try the other supported setup methods in its guide. When those options do not work, use a replacement remote designed for the exact TV model; TCL likewise points users to the original or a model-specific replacement when universal-remote setup options fail.
