The finder does not locate an unpaired remote, and the way to trigger it differs by device. If the remote itself is unresponsive, check its battery light, use a phone as a temporary remote, then restart and re-pair it before trying a model-specific reset.
Check your device and how you trigger the finder
Find My Remote is documented for the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV with their compatible Google Voice Remotes. It is not a general locator for every Google TV television or generic remote. Google says the Voice Remote must already be paired with the streaming device for the finder to work. Google’s Find My Remote instructions describe these trigger methods:

- Google TV Streamer: Briefly press the finder button on the back of the Streamer. The paired remote should play a sound for 30 seconds, and the TV should display “Playing sound for 30 sec.” The rear button works with the Google TV remote, not an arbitrary remote.
- Chromecast with Google TV: Trigger the finder through Google Home or a supported voice assistant. Google’s instructions do not identify the Streamer’s rear button as the Chromecast method.
If the remote is simply missing, try the appropriate trigger again from close to the device and listen nearby. If nothing happens, continue with pairing and power checks rather than assuming the remote is broken.

A remote that has never paired, or has lost its connection, cannot be found by the feature. During Google TV Streamer setup, most remotes pair automatically. If the setup screen says “Start pairing,” hold Back and Home together until the remote’s light pulses, then follow the on-screen prompts. See Google’s Google TV Streamer setup steps.

If you have a working way to control the TV, check the connected remotes under Settings > Remotes & Accessories. The exact screen labels can vary by device. For a remote that is listed but does not respond reliably, proceed to the battery and restart steps; for a remote that is not connected, use the re-pairing sequence below.
Check the remote batteries and LED
Remove and reinsert both batteries, then watch the remote’s LED. Google’s troubleshooting guide uses the LED response to help identify battery or remote problems. If the light does not flash twice, reseat the batteries as directed in the guide; if it still does not flash, replace both cells with the original batteries or two fresh 1.5-volt AAA batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Follow Google’s remote troubleshooting instructions for the precise checks.

A missing flash does not by itself prove that the remote needs replacement. Test with fresh batteries before resetting or buying another remote.
Use your phone while the physical remote is unavailable
The Google Home app or Google TV app can provide a virtual remote for supported devices. This is useful for navigating settings when the physical remote will not connect. Google’s phone-remote setup is at Use your phone as the remote.

For the Google TV virtual remote, make sure the phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If it still will not connect, Google’s guidance recommends restarting the TV by disconnecting its power for 10 seconds, reconnecting it, and trying again. Restart the device, then unpair and pair the remote again
If fresh batteries do not help and the phone remote works, restart the streaming device. If the physical remote remains disconnected, use the virtual remote to navigate the settings and remove the old pairing before pairing it again.

- Restart the streamer. Reboot the Google TV Streamer or Chromecast with Google TV, then check whether the physical remote reconnects.
- Unpair the remote. With another control method, open Settings > Remotes & Accessories, select the affected remote and choose the unpair/remove option shown on screen.
- Reset the remote for its exact model. Use the relevant instructions in the next section; the reset combinations differ.
- Pair it again. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions for the streamer. If the Chromecast with Google TV pairing scan fails and stops, Google’s guidance says to reboot the device before it scans again. See Google’s Chromecast pairing-error steps.
Reset only with the procedure for your remote model
Remote resets are model-specific. Try them after battery checks and a device restart, not as the first step.
- Google TV Streamer Voice Remote: Hold Mute and Center/Select together until the LED becomes solid white.
- Chromecast with Google TV Voice Remote: Remove the batteries, hold Home while reinserting them, and release Home when the LED pulses.
After resetting, pair the remote again using the on-screen setup. Do not use one model’s reset combination on the other remote. Google’s complete procedures are in its remote troubleshooting guide.

If buttons work but the remote responds slowly
Slow response is different from a failed pairing. If button presses eventually register, try Google’s placement suggestions before resetting: move closer to the streamer, move the Wi-Fi access point away from it, or use an HDMI extension cable to move the streamer away from other HDMI cables. These are troubleshooting options for suspected placement or interference issues, not guaranteed fixes. See Google’s remote troubleshooting guide.
When to replace the remote
Consider replacement only after checking compatibility, batteries, restart, reset and pairing. Google documents replacement Voice Remotes for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer, and recommends using the remote included with the device for the best experience. Before ordering, identify your streaming device and the remote generation; a remote that fits one device family may not provide the same compatibility or features with another.
