If a dating app has shown your profile or photos somewhere you did not expect, first save evidence, then check the app’s current privacy notice and visibility controls. Contact the service with a specific request; if that does not resolve the issue, consider a complaint to the privacy or consumer regulator where you live. In the United States, a separate removal process may apply to qualifying intimate images shared without consent, but it does not cover every profile photo.
What to do first
- Document the disclosure. Note the app, dates, profile fields or photos involved, where they appeared, and how you found out. Save screenshots, messages, notifications, URLs, and copies of the relevant privacy notice or settings page. Do not repost or forward intimate material.
- Check the app’s notice and controls. Review the current privacy policy and in-app visibility settings. Look for whether the material was visible to other members, included in a shareable profile snapshot, or provided to a service provider or another company.
- Send the service a clear request. Use its privacy, support, report, or account controls. Ask what information was shared, with whom or which categories of recipients, for what purpose, and whether it can be restricted or deleted. Request confirmation of how the company handled your concern, and keep its reply and any case number.
- Escalate if needed. If the company’s explanation does not resolve the concern, consider contacting the relevant privacy or consumer-protection regulator in your jurisdiction. For a qualifying nonconsensual intimate image in the United States, also see the separate route below.
Check what the app actually says and shares
A privacy notice should explain who collects your information, what it is used for, and whether it is shared with other organisations. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) advises checking those points and asking the company for details if its notice is unclear. See the ICO’s online safety guidance.

Do not assume that one dating app’s practices apply to another. For example, Tinder’s international privacy policy says information members voluntarily put on a public profile is visible to other members. It also describes relevant Tinder communications, such as a profile snapshot sent in an email or notification to a potential match. That is an example of Tinder’s stated terms, not a rule for every service.

Then use the app’s controls to limit visibility if they address the exposure. If you are considering account closure, read the app’s policy first: deletion and retention terms are service-specific. Tinder’s policy, for instance, says account closure and deletion are handled under its stated terms; closing an account should not be assumed to erase every record immediately or where retention is required.

How to write to the dating app
Be factual and specific. Identify the account, material, date, and place where you saw it. Explain why the exposure was unexpected, and ask for the outcome you want. You can adapt this template:
I am contacting you about [profile information or photos] associated with my account [account identifier]. I learned on [date] that it appeared [where/how]. Please tell me what information was disclosed, the purpose, and the recipient or categories of recipients. Please restrict further visibility or sharing where possible, and tell me whether the material can be removed or deleted. Please confirm what action you take and whether any retention limits apply.

Use the service’s privacy or support channel, and attach only evidence needed to identify the issue. Avoid sending or circulating intimate images unless the platform’s reporting process specifically requires a safe submission method.

When a U.S. FTC report may be relevant
If you are in the United States and believe a company’s handling of your data contradicts its privacy promises, you can consider reporting it to the FTC. The agency’s March 30, 2026 announcement about Match and OkCupid described allegations that OkCupid gave an unrelated third party access to user data, including photos and location information, contrary to its privacy promises. The FTC alleged that nearly three million OkCupid user photos were involved; that is an allegation about photos, not a count of unique affected people or a finding of liability. The FTC’s case page listed the matter as pending when reviewed.

The FTC said its proposed settlement would prohibit misrepresentations about the collection, use, disclosure, deletion, and protection of personal information. This enforcement matter shows that privacy promises can be subject to agency action, but it does not establish that every unexpected disclosure is unlawful or ensure a particular outcome for an individual. If the material is an intimate image shared without consent
This is a different situation from an ordinary profile photo. In the United States, the FTC says that covered platforms receiving a valid request under the Take It Down Act must remove the reported qualifying intimate image and known identical copies within 48 hours. The FTC says the relevant provision took effect on May 19, 2026. The guidance covers qualifying intimate imagery, including real images and digital forgeries; it is not a general 48-hour takedown deadline for all photos or all platforms. Check the platform’s reporting process and the FTC’s Take It Down Act guidance for the applicable scope and submission requirements.

Rights and deadlines depend on where you live
Do not assume there is a universal right to delete every record or a single response deadline for every dating app. The app’s terms, the type of information, the circumstances of disclosure, and the law where you live all matter. If the privacy notice is unclear, ask the company to explain it; if the reply remains unsatisfactory, consult the relevant local regulator’s current guidance. The ICO’s advice is UK-specific, and U.S. FTC routes should not be treated as worldwide procedures.
