Google Trends API in Python Without pytrends: What Works in 2026

Google offers a limited-access Trends API alpha, but its public documentation does not yet provide a Python implementation guide. Here are the supported data capabilities and realistic alternatives to pytrends.

Short answer: Google has an official Google Trends API, but it is still a limited-access alpha rather than a generally available service. Google’s public documentation describes its data and capabilities, but does not provide a Python authentication flow, endpoint schema, or working code example. If you are not accepted into the alpha, there is no documented, universally available official Python route to use in its place.

Is there an official Google Trends API?

Yes. Google calls it the Google Trends API alpha and invites developers to apply to test it. Google says access is limited, with priority for applicants who have a defined use case, can begin soon, and are willing to provide feedback. Applying does not guarantee access, and the announcement does not establish a date for general availability.

The current Google Trends API documentation explains the data and broad capabilities. The official pages covered here do not document how to authenticate, which request endpoints or parameters to use, or how to parse a response in Python. So although the API is programmatic, its public documentation is not yet a copy-and-run Python tutorial.

What the official API says it can do

Google describes a rolling five-year history and regional data at country, region, and subregion levels. The API supports daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly aggregation, and Google says it can compare dozens of terms. Its consistently scaled values also make it possible to join results from separate requests and monitor new periods without retrieving the entire historical range again.

Google’s July 24, 2025 launch announcement specifies 1,800 days of history and says data is available up to two days before a request. Those are dated launch details; consult the current documentation for behavior that may have changed. Google’s current materials and the launch post describe the website’s term-comparison limit differently, so this guide does not assign a number to the website limit.

What Google Trends values mean

Trends values represent search interest, not absolute search counts. On the public website, results are scaled from 0 to 100 for each request. Google says the API uses consistent scaling across requests, so its results can be compared and combined more directly than separately normalized website results.

That distinction matters in analysis and reporting: a value is not a count of searches, and a higher interest score does not by itself reveal how many people searched. Describe the metric as search interest unless you have a separate, supported source for absolute search volume.

Choosing a route without pytrends

Route What is established Access and support caveat
Official Google Trends API alpha Five-year rolling history, standard time aggregations, regional data, and consistent scaling across requests. Limited tester access; application required. Public official pages reviewed do not give Python implementation instructions.
pytrends Archived Python project whose code uses Google Trends website endpoints. The repository was archived on April 17, 2025, and is read-only. It is not Google’s supported API; upstream maintenance should not be expected.
Third-party hosted scraper or API A September 2026 tutorial result describes an Apify-based approach. The tutorial could not be verified beyond its search-result description, and its author built the scraper. Its capabilities, terms, pricing, and reliability are not established here.
Manual Google Trends website Google says Trends data remains available through its website. Manual use is not a Python integration.

What to do if you need Python access now

If you can apply for the alpha

  1. Open Google’s alpha announcement and follow its application route.
  2. Describe a concrete Trends use case, your readiness to start, and how you can provide feedback—the priorities Google identifies for applicants.
  3. If accepted, use the implementation instructions supplied for testers. Do not assume a particular Python package, authentication method, request URL, or response format from the public overview.

If you cannot access the alpha

Use the Trends website manually when that meets your needs. If considering automation of the public site or a hosted scraper, treat it as an unofficial route: it may break, may face access limits, and is not equivalent to Google-supported API access. Verify current technical behavior and applicable terms before building a dependency around it. Do not assume that avoiding pytrends makes another website scraper stable or officially supported.

Why pytrends is not the official alternative

The pytrends GitHub repository was archived by its owner on April 17, 2025. Its code makes requests to Google Trends website endpoints, rather than documenting access to Google’s official API. The repository also includes a removal notice for a method described as removed for incorrectness. Together, these facts make it a maintenance-risk choice, not a supported Google integration.

Replacing pytrends with another unofficial client does not resolve the underlying uncertainty: website endpoints and automation behavior can change, and the evidence here does not establish another client’s stability, permissions, or reliability.
