Google Translate Added 110 Languages: What the June 2024 Expansion Means

Google’s June 2024 expansion added 110 languages, including Cantonese, Manx, NKo, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), Tamazight and Tok Pisin. Here is what Google claimed, how PaLM 2 helped and what remains unverified today.

Google announced on June 27, 2024 that Google Translate was adding 110 languages—its largest expansion at that point. Google estimated that the additions represented more than 614 million speakers, or about 8% of the world’s population. The announcement marked when the change was disclosed; it does not mean all 110 languages appeared everywhere simultaneously, nor does it establish Google Translate’s language count in 2026.

Which languages were added?

Google’s announcement names examples rather than providing, in the material available here, a complete current feature matrix for all 110 additions. The examples span major languages, regional varieties, smaller-community languages and languages undergoing revitalization.

Language or variety Context Google gave
Cantonese A long-requested addition; overlap between written Cantonese and Mandarin made data collection and model training more difficult.
Manx Google said Manx nearly went extinct after its last native speaker died in 1974 and now has thousands of speakers connected with a revival movement.
NKo A standardized form of West African Manding languages, using an alphabet invented in 1949.
Punjabi (Shahmukhi) A Punjabi variety written in the Shahmukhi script.
Tamazight (Amazigh) An Amazigh language addition representing North African linguistic communities.
Tok Pisin A widely used language of Papua New Guinea.

Google also said roughly one-quarter of the new languages came from Africa, naming Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda and Wolof among the additions. These examples should not be read as a complete list of the 110 languages or as proof that every language has identical modes, scripts or quality.

How large was the expansion?

The speaker and population figures are Google estimates. They are useful for describing the intended reach, but they are not an independent census or validation of translation performance.

What technology enabled the additions?

Google said its PaLM 2 model helped Translate learn languages related to languages it already supported more efficiently. In its examples, Awadhi and Marwadi are related to Hindi, while Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole are French creoles. This explains Google’s stated development approach; it is not an independent assessment that these languages translate as accurately as Hindi or French.

Google described a different technique in a 2022 announcement covering 24 earlier additions: zero-shot machine translation, in which a model learned to translate into a language without seeing a direct example in that language. The 2022 and 2024 announcements document separate expansions and methods. Neither establishes equal quality across all supported languages.

Why dialects, scripts and spelling affect the result

Adding a language is not simply switching on one universal dictionary. Google says support involves choices about dialects and spelling conventions, and some languages do not have one agreed standard. Its example for Romani is especially explicit: Google described the output as closest to Southern Vlax, with elements of Northern Vlax and Balkan varieties.

That qualification matters when a speaker asks whether Translate “supports” a language. The answer can depend on the variety, script, spelling and input mode. The announcement does not establish that text, voice, camera and offline translation are all available for every new language, so users should check the language selector in the current web service or app.

Can you use the new languages now?

Google directs users to translate.google.com and to the Google Translate apps for Android and iOS. Availability can change by product, account, platform and language. To check a particular language, open the language picker and search for the language or variety by its displayed name; then verify which actions—such as typed text, speech or camera input—are offered. The June 2024 announcement alone does not provide a complete present-day feature matrix.

What “suddenly” gets right—and what it does not

“Suddenly” describes the scale and timing of Google’s public announcement: 110 additions arrived in one major expansion rather than through a small, individually publicized update. It should not be interpreted as a claim that every language launched at the same instant worldwide or that support has remained unchanged since June 2024.

Google’s 2024 retrospective reported more than 240 supported languages after the expansion. Because that is a dated snapshot, it should not be presented as Google Translate’s current 2026 total without newer verification.

What users should expect in practice

  • Broader access: Speakers of languages such as Cantonese, Tok Pisin, Manx and NKo gained a route to Google’s translation tools where they previously lacked one.
  • Uneven coverage: A language may appear in the selector while offering fewer input or output modes than a major language.
  • Variety-specific output: Dialect and spelling choices can make the result differ from a user’s local form.
  • Human review remains important: The announcements provide no independent comparative quality testing, so legal, medical, educational and culturally sensitive translations should be checked by a fluent speaker or qualified professional.

Bottom line

Google’s June 2024 announcement added 110 languages, its largest expansion then, and claimed reach of more than 614 million speakers. The additions broadened representation across major, regional, African, endangered and revitalized languages. PaLM 2 and related-language learning were part of Google’s explanation, but the announcement does not prove equal accuracy, identical features or a current 2026 language total for every addition.
