Google’s Android XR smart glasses have been shown as prototypes, not as a retail product with published Android compatibility requirements or performance tests. Google says the glasses work with a phone to provide hands-free access to apps, but it has not specified supported Android versions or phone models, nor published figures for speed, battery life, or reliability.
Do Google’s smart glasses work with Android phones?
Google describes its glasses as working with a phone, but that statement is not a compatibility guarantee for every Android device. The company has not published a supported-phone list, minimum Android version, hardware requirements, or connection details in the cited product demonstrations.

Google’s May 2025 demo describes the phone as a way to access apps hands-free. That confirms the intended design, not which apps or handsets will work in a consumer release. See Google’s Android XR glasses demo.

Google has described a camera, microphones and speakers, with an optional display built into a lens. The design pairs the glasses with Gemini and a phone: the camera and microphones provide context, while speakers let the wearer hear responses, listen to music, or take calls. The optional in-lens display can show information privately. These are Google-described features and demonstrations, not independently tested retail-device capabilities.

At I/O 2025, Google also outlined possible uses including messaging, making appointments, turn-by-turn directions, taking photos and live translation. The company named Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as eyewear partners and said it looked forward to working with Kering Eyewear in the future; those announcements did not specify consumer models, prices or shipping dates. Details are in Google’s Gemini on Android XR announcement.
What does “performance” mean—and what is still unknown?
There is not enough published information to rate Google’s glasses for Android performance as if they were a tested product. The official material describes intended functions, but does not establish measured responsiveness, battery endurance, thermal behavior, audio quality, display readability in different lighting, network dependence, or sustained-use reliability.

- Battery and comfort: No endurance or comfort results are stated.
- Display: The in-lens display is optional; no published readability measurements are given.
Until Google publishes specifications or independent testing is available, claims about which Android phone will work best—or how fast or long the glasses will run—would be speculation.
How the glasses fit into Android XR
Android XR is a broader platform covering more than one kind of device. Google’s initial announcement introduced the platform for headsets and glasses, described a headset as the first device category, and presented glasses as a future direction. Headset features should not be assumed to apply to the phone-connected AI-glasses prototypes. See Google’s Android XR platform announcement.

Developer updates have since added tools for AI glasses. The December 2025 preview described Jetpack Projected for connecting mobile devices with glasses sensors, speakers and displays, along with Compose Glimmer components for display glasses and emulator support for touchpad and voice interactions. These are developer tools, not consumer performance results. The Android XR SDK Developer Preview 3 update also discusses ARCore motion-tracking and geospatial capabilities.
Google’s June 2026 developer update describes optical-display legibility improvements, geospatial APIs for wired glasses, and Unreal Engine and Godot support. It identifies XREAL’s Project Aura as an upcoming wired XR glasses device and mentions a Developer Catalyst Program offering selected developers pre-release hardware access. Wired XR glasses are a distinct category from Google’s phone-connected AI-glasses prototypes; the update does not establish that their capabilities or performance are interchangeable. Project Astra is a research effort, not a consumer release
Google DeepMind says Project Astra works on Android phones and prototype glasses, with cross-device memory intended to let a user move between devices and continue a conversation. DeepMind describes Astra as a research prototype being used and refined by a limited number of trusted testers. That status does not mean Google’s glasses are generally available or that Astra’s capabilities constitute a finished consumer product. See Google DeepMind’s Project Astra page.

What to check before buying
There is no confirmed consumer Google smart-glasses model or compatibility list in the cited official sources, so a buyer cannot yet verify fit with a particular Android phone. When a product is announced, look for its supported handset and Android-version list, connection requirements, battery claims and test conditions, display specifications, supported apps, privacy controls, availability and price. For performance comparisons, look for independent results rather than demonstrations of intended features.
