No—not with AltStore Classic’s documented workflow. Its “Refresh All” button does not remove the need for AltServer, which runs on a computer. AltStore Classic apps expire after seven days unless refreshed through that workflow. If you qualify, AltStore PAL is a separate computer-free option, but it is not a full replacement for Classic.
Why AltStore Classic needs a computer to refresh apps
AltStore describes AltServer as a companion application for a computer that lets AltStore sideload apps onto an iPhone or iPad. For Classic, the device must communicate with the computer running AltServer over the same Wi-Fi network or through a USB connection.

AltStore says apps installed with AltStore expire after seven days and can no longer be opened unless they are refreshed. That seven-day period is the duration stated on AltStore’s current Getting Started page; the page does not state a publication year for the figure.

What background refresh does—and does not do
AltStore says it attempts to refresh apps in the background during the week. An attempt is not a guarantee: the computer running AltServer still needs to be reachable. If an app is approaching expiration, open AltStore and make sure AltServer is running and available rather than relying solely on background refresh.
If AltStore cannot find AltServer, its troubleshooting guidance is to check that the computer is running and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Public, work, or school networks may block device discovery; trying another network or connecting by USB may help.

Computer-free alternative: AltStore PAL, if you’re eligible
AltStore PAL is a distinct official marketplace, not a computer-free mode for AltStore Classic. AltStore’s comparison says PAL apps do not expire on Classic’s seven-day schedule and that PAL does not require a computer.

- You are physically located in the European Union, Japan, or Brazil.
- You use an App Store account for one of those regions.
- Your device runs iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later.
PAL has important capability differences: according to AltStore’s comparison, it does not install IPA files and does not support JIT. If you depend on either feature, PAL is not a direct replacement for Classic.
How the options differ
| Option | Computer requirement | App expiration | Availability and requirements | Capability notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AltStore Classic | AltServer on a computer, with the device on the same Wi-Fi or connected by USB | Apps expire after seven days unless refreshed | Official setup describes Mac or Windows; check AltStore’s current setup guidance for requirements | Supports IPA sideloading and JIT, according to AltStore’s comparison |
| AltStore PAL | No computer required | No seven-day app expiration, according to AltStore’s comparison | Physical presence in the EU, Japan, or Brazil; matching-region App Store account; iOS/iPadOS 18.0 or later | Does not install IPA files or support JIT, according to AltStore’s comparison |
| Remote AltServer hosting | AltStore’s official pages reviewed do not establish whether a hosted setup is supported | Not stated in the official pages reviewed | Not established in the official pages reviewed | No endorsed provider is established in the official pages reviewed |
What about using a remote computer?
A remotely accessible computer running AltServer may sound like a workaround, but AltStore’s official pages establish the computer dependency without documenting an endorsed remote-hosting service. Treat claims that a particular hosted service is officially supported—or that a newer Classic version removes the requirement—as unverified unless a current AltStore source confirms them.
