A warning will not necessarily disappear as soon as you make the fix: Google says a security review can take a few days to a few weeks, and status updates across its services can lag.
First identify which Google warning you have
“Google security warning” can mean a warning in Google Search, a Chrome interstitial, or a notice in Search Console. Those signals do not all point to the same issue, so start with the report and wording rather than assuming your site was hacked.

| What you see | What it usually indicates | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| A Security Issues notice, or wording such as “This site may be hacked” or “This site may harm your computer” | Google detected evidence of hacking or behavior that could harm visitors or their devices. | Search Console’s Security Issues report; check the site in Chrome and, if needed, Safe Browsing site status. | A notice in the Manual Actions report | Google identified a violation of its Search policies. It may affect ranking or inclusion without producing a browser security warning. | Search Console’s Manual Actions report and its policy-specific details. Manual Actions report |
| A search-result warning but no notice in Search Console | Google says it may have detected the issue algorithmically. | Check Safe Browsing site status and monitor Google’s warning guidance. Google Search Central guidance |
Use the report that matches your notice: a security review is for a security issue, while a manual action requires the policy-specific repair and review flow.

How to remove a warning caused by a security issue
- Verify the site in Search Console. Open the property for the affected website and select Security Issues in the report navigation. If the report shows an issue, read its category and affected sample URLs before changing the site. Google’s Security Issues report instructions describe the categories and review process.
- Inspect the sample URLs and reported behavior. Google’s categories include malware or unwanted downloads, links to harmful downloads, phishing or deceptive content, and unclear mobile billing. A compromise may be hidden from the site owner or shown only to some visitors. Check sample URLs with URL Inspection; if the content is not visible in your usual session, inspect from another account or device as appropriate. Google explains how to interpret the report and check affected pages.
- Remove harmful content and repair the entry point. Depending on the report, remove injected pages or links, harmful downloads, phishing behavior, or other flagged material. Then investigate and fix the weakness that enabled it, such as an outdated site component where that is the cause. Cleaning visible symptoms alone can leave the site open to reinfection. Google’s hacked-site guidance discusses restoring affected files from a known-good backup or removing spammy content. Scanning hosted binaries can help, but antivirus software does not detect every kind of malware.
- Check the whole website, not just the examples. Review all affected pages, downloads, and other relevant files. Google’s review instructions say to request review only when the entire website is clean and secure.
- Request a security review in the Security Issues report. Use the review option there and describe what you found, what you removed, and how you addressed the cause. Be specific enough to explain the cleanup rather than merely stating that the site is fixed. Google’s report guidance covers the request.
- Monitor the result. Watch for Search Console messages and check the warning again after Google processes the review. If Google detected the issue algorithmically and there is no review option, the warning may clear after Google crawls the site again. Google describes warning checks and update delays.
If Search Console reports a Manual Action
A Manual Action is not the same as a security issue. Read the specific policy violation in the Manual Actions report, correct every affected page or practice, and request review through that report. A security cleanup request will not resolve a policy violation, and a manual-action request is not a substitute for cleaning a compromised site.
#1 Best Overall
Google calls a request to review a site after fixing problems identified in a manual action or security notification a “reconsideration request.” Follow the workflow shown in the report that contains your notice. Google’s reconsideration-request guidance
Why hiding the result does not clear the warning
The Removals tool can temporarily block a page from Google Search, and Refresh Outdated Content can update a search result after content changes or disappears. Neither repairs a security problem on the website. Clean the site and use the review process that matches the notice instead.

How long it takes for the warning to disappear
Google says security reviews may take a few days to a few weeks. It also says warning statuses can take a few days to update across Safe Browsing, Chrome, and Search Console. These are service estimates, not a guarantee that every case will clear within that interval. A delay by itself does not establish that the cleanup failed; check Search Console for the review result and verify the site remains clean while statuses catch up. When to get professional incident-response help
If you cannot confidently identify the compromised files, contain the intrusion, or fix the entry point without risking more damage, seek qualified website incident-response help. Google’s security guidance points site owners toward support resources when cleanup is beyond their skill level. Whoever handles the cleanup should address both the harmful content and the vulnerability, then verify the full site before a review is requested.
