Google Search vs. Bing: Privacy, AI Features, and Data Controls Compared

Google and Bing both offer activity controls, but search history, personalization, and AI data use are managed separately. Here’s what each setting covers and what it doesn’t.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither Google Search nor Bing is a categorical privacy winner. Both let signed-in users review and delete search activity, but history, personalization, AI features, advertising, and model improvement are governed by different controls. Google is rolling out separate Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations settings; Microsoft manages Bing search history through its privacy dashboard and gives Copilot its own controls. The right choice depends on which data you want to limit—and whether you use a personal or work or school account. This comparison reflects official Google and Microsoft guidance checked on October 4, 2026; settings and availability can change.

What Google and Microsoft mean by search history

Search history is not necessarily a record of query text alone. Google’s Search Services History may include queries, results viewed, generative AI responses, some uploaded media, information about sites visited through Search services, and context such as language, device, and general location. The service family Google lists includes Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. Google’s Search Services History guidance describes the scope.

Microsoft says Bing collects the terms searched along with contextual information including IP address, location, cookie identifiers, time and date, and browser configuration. Signed-in users can view account-associated Bing history in Microsoft’s privacy dashboard. Bing search history and Copilot conversations are separate data surfaces: clearing one does not, by itself, clear the other. See Microsoft’s Bing search-history and retention guidance and its Copilot privacy controls.

How to find and manage saved activity

Google Search

  1. Check which controls are available. Open Google’s Search privacy controls. Google is gradually rolling out Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations controls. If they are not available on your account, Google says history and personalization for Search services may still be managed through Web & App Activity.
  2. Turn off future saving or remove existing activity. Use the available history control to turn Search Services History off, delete past activity, or choose automatic deletion. Google documents automatic deletion intervals of 3, 18, or 36 months. Turning a control off does not itself erase activity already saved; delete it separately or use the available automatic-deletion setting.
  3. Review personalization separately. Google’s Personalized Recommendations guidance covers a separate control. Turning personalization off does not, by itself, pause or delete saved activity.

Google says that when Search Services History is off, future activity is not saved to that history and is not used for generative AI training unless you provide feedback. That setting does not govern every Google activity control: Timeline, YouTube History, Gemini Apps Activity, and Web & App Activity have their own settings. Google also says it may collect and use information not associated with an account for service operation, safety, and business purposes. Signed-out users may still receive search or ad customization based on search-related activity unless they turn off Search customization or browse privately. Google’s history guidance and activity-controls guidance explain these distinctions.

Bing search

  1. Open the Microsoft privacy dashboard and sign in to the Microsoft account whose activity you want to review. Microsoft’s Bing history dashboard guide explains how to view and clear account-associated searches.
  2. Clear Bing history there if you want to remove it from the account’s visible history. Microsoft cautions that clearing it may not immediately remove backup copies: “some copies may be retained within Microsoft’s backup systems for a limited time.”
  3. Manage Copilot separately if you use it. Microsoft lists separate personal Copilot choices for web search, chat history, memory and personalization, advertising, and data use for training. Consult the current Copilot controls; the available labels and options can depend on the app version, account, age, and country.

Bing searches made while signed out are not displayed in the account’s dashboard history. A private browser window mainly limits local device history; it does not prevent a provider from receiving a search, and signing in can associate activity with an account. Microsoft describes this distinction in its Bing privacy guidance.

What the controls do—and do not—cover

How AI features change the comparison

Google Search’s generative features

Google Search includes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s Search Services History guidance says the history may include generative AI responses and that Search activity can be used to provide, develop, and improve services, including training generative AI models. Google says that when history is off, future Search services activity is not used for that training unless you provide feedback.

Google also describes safeguards for history used in AI training or by trained reviewers: it says account identifiers are disconnected, filters are applied to remove identifying or sensitive information, and it will seek permission before sharing media with service providers for human review in model improvement. Google says data used for AI training is retained for up to four years after being disconnected from a Google Account. These are Google’s descriptions of its practices, not an independent audit. Microsoft Copilot

Copilot can use web search, but its chat history, memory and personalization, advertising, and training choices are not the same as Bing search-history settings. Microsoft’s personal controls distinguish the updated Copilot app from older versions; the relevant guidance for that updated app is dated August 18, 2026. Check the controls for the app and account you actually use rather than assuming a Bing history change also governs Copilot. Microsoft Copilot privacy controls

Microsoft’s Copilot FAQ describes training opt-outs and exclusions that vary by version, account, age, and geography, so a single rule should not be generalized to every user. For work or school Copilot Chat, Microsoft says prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models, but prompts, responses, and Bing queries triggered by prompts are logged and may be accessible to the organization’s IT administrator through Microsoft search and audit tools. Consult Microsoft’s Copilot privacy FAQ and its work or school data-protection explanation.

Microsoft: 18 months Microsoft says cookies and other identifiers linked to a specific account or device are no longer used for personalized search experiences after this period. Bing search-history guidance
Microsoft: up to 5 years Microsoft describes this as a planned retention period for authenticated-user data to help improve products and services, after sensitive information is removed and safeguards are applied. The documentation presents it as an upcoming change, not a statement that this period already applies to all users. Bing search-history guidance

Which setup fits your needs?

  • You want less account-linked search history: review and turn off the relevant Google history control or clear Bing history in Microsoft’s dashboard. Treat turning off future saving and deleting past activity as separate tasks.
  • You want to limit personalization: check personalization controls independently of history. In Google’s rollout, Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations are separate; Microsoft also separates Bing personalization from Copilot memory and personalization.
  • You use AI answers or chat: review the service-specific AI settings as well as ordinary search history. Google Search’s generative responses can fall within Search Services History; Copilot activity is separately controlled from Bing history.
  • You use a work or school account: check your organization’s rules before entering sensitive information. Microsoft says work or school Copilot Chat interactions are logged and may be available to an IT administrator, even though those prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models.

No single switch makes searches invisible to the service provider or governs every related account activity. Google says its search controls do not replace settings such as YouTube History or Timeline; Microsoft likewise separates Bing history, Copilot activity, and organizational Copilot data handling. Use the linked official settings pages for the account and product version you have.
