Google Search Console Country Filter: What Has—and Hasn’t—Changed

Google’s recent Search Console changes include country breakdowns in generative AI reports, experimental AI configuration, and a separate multimodal search-type filter—not a confirmed redesign of the standard country filter.

Google has not announced a general redesign of Search Console’s standard country filter. The recent changes that may be causing confusion are country reporting in new Search Generative AI reports, an experimental AI feature that can apply country filters, and a separate multimodal search-type filter. They affect different reports or controls.

What the country filter does

Country is a geographic dimension for breaking down Search Console performance data. It helps you inspect how reported performance varies by country; it is a reporting control, not a change to your site’s rankings. Google’s explanation of Performance data describes dimensions and how they can be used in report filters or the dimensions table: Search Console performance data filtering and limits.

The phrase “country filter update” does not appear to name one specific Google release. The announcements below describe separate capabilities, not a confirmed overhaul of the standard country filter.

Which recent Search Console changes involve country data?

Change What it affects Availability described by Google
Country breakdown in Search Generative AI performance reports Country-level reporting in dedicated Search and Discover views for visibility in generative AI features. Google said the worldwide rollout to all websites was complete on August 31, 2026.
AI-powered configuration An experimental natural-language feature that can set filters, comparisons, and metrics—including country—in the Search results Performance report. At its December 4, 2025 announcement, Google described a rollout to a limited set of sites; availability should not be assumed for every property.
Multimodal search-type filter A search-type control for traffic from Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click “Search this image” feature. It is separate from country. Google announced a global rollout beginning September 24, 2026, with metrics visible for sites receiving this traffic.

How to tell which update you are seeing

A country breakdown in a generative AI report

This is country-level visibility reporting in the dedicated Search Generative AI views, not evidence that the existing country filter in the standard Performance report has been replaced. Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement describes impressions, pages, and country reporting, and says rollout to all websites worldwide was complete August 31, 2026.

An AI-generated report configuration

This feature is intended to configure the Search results Performance report from a natural-language request. Google says it can apply country filters, but it is experimental and may misinterpret what you ask. Google advises users to review the suggested filters before analyzing the data. The feature was rolling out to a limited set of sites when announced on December 4, 2025.

A new multimodal search option

The September 24, 2026 announcement concerns the search-type filter, not the country dimension. It covers searches made with Lens, Circle to Search on Android, image uploads to Google Search, and Chrome’s right-click image-search feature. The reported metrics are relevant to sites that receive this kind of traffic.

What country performance data can and cannot tell you

A country breakdown lets you compare reported performance geographically. It does not by itself establish why performance differs, prove a ranking change, or show that a country filter altered how Google ranks a page.

Performance reports also have privacy and reporting limits. In an October 19, 2022 explanation, Google said anonymized queries could be omitted from tables for privacy while remaining included in chart totals, unless a query filter was applied. That post also described row limits for certain exports and data requests. These are dated details, not a reliable statement of today’s operational limits; consult Google’s current Search Console documentation before relying on specific row counts or export behavior.

Practical takeaway

If you see a new country-related view, first identify the report and control: the existing country dimension, country reporting in the generative AI views, or a country filter suggested by experimental AI configuration. If the new option is about Lens or other image-based searches, it is a search-type filter. Google’s announcements do not establish that the standard country filter itself has been redesigned.
