You can’t force Google to reset its search algorithms or guarantee that a site will regain rankings. What you can do depends on the problem: diagnose a traffic decline, request a crawl of a page you own, address a reported manual action, or ask Google to refresh an eligible outdated result.
What does “reset Google” mean?
People use “reset” for several different Search problems. Identify which one you have before taking action:

- Rankings or traffic fell: investigate the change in Search Console. There is no site-level reset button.
- A page you changed is not updated in Search: request indexing or submit an updated sitemap. These steps can prompt discovery, not guarantee indexing or ranking.
- Google reports a manual action: fix the policy issue identified in Search Console and request a review.
- A result for a page you do not own is outdated: Google’s Refresh Outdated Content tool may apply if the page is gone or has changed substantially.
- You want a live page removed from the web: refreshing a Google result does not remove the page from its host.
Why a Google update does not have a site reset
Google describes core updates as broad changes to its ranking systems, not targeted penalties against particular sites or pages. A page can lose position even when it has not changed—for example, if other pages become more useful or relevant. Search positions are not fixed. Google’s core updates guidance says these changes “don’t target specific sites or individual web pages.”

How to diagnose a traffic or ranking decline
Compare the right dates, pages, and searches
- In Search Console, open Performance and compare the affected period with an appropriate earlier period. Identify which pages and queries changed rather than relying only on a site-wide total.
- If the decline coincides with a core update, wait until Google says the rollout has ended, then wait at least a full week before comparing performance, as Google recommends.
- Separate Web Search from other applicable search types, such as Images, Video, and News. A change in one type may not appear in another.
- Judge the scale and persistence of the movement. A small fluctuation is not a reason for drastic edits; a sustained, large decline across the site merits deeper investigation.

Rule out technical and measurement problems
- Confirm that the Search Console property covers the site’s actual protocol and hostname.
- Inspect affected URLs and crawl or indexing reports. Check for a robots.txt block, a
noindexdirective, availability problems, or security issues. - Look for accidental removal requests and recent URL or domain moves.
- Check whether the decline reflects seasonality or weaker demand. Google recommends examining affected queries and using Google Trends to see whether interest has fallen more broadly.

Choose the action that matches the problem

Requesting a crawl is not a ranking reset
For a page you own, use URL Inspection in Search Console to request indexing after making a meaningful update. If many URLs need discovery, submit an updated sitemap. Google says requests do not guarantee that a page will be included in Search, and repeatedly submitting the same URL does not make it happen faster. Recrawling can take days to weeks. These tools help Google discover or revisit URLs; they do not instruct its ranking systems to restore a previous position. Google describes its systems as considering signals across “hundreds of billions of web pages and other content” in the Search index. That scale is context, not a prediction of how quickly any particular page will be indexed or rank.
What to do about a manual action
A manual action is different from an algorithmic ranking shift. Check the Manual actions report in Search Console. If Google has listed a manual action, address the specific issue described there, then submit the review request available in the report. The review process is for a reported policy problem—not a way to ask Google to reconsider an ordinary ranking decline. Follow Google’s manual actions guidance.
Do not use disavow as a routine reset step
Google warns against disavowing backlinks indiscriminately. If unnatural links are relevant to a manual action, make a good-faith effort to address them and follow Google’s specific instructions before considering the disavow tool. See Google’s disavow links guidance.

When an outdated result belongs to someone else
If a page or image has disappeared, or its content has substantially changed, the Refresh Outdated Content tool may help update the result shown by Google. It is not intended for content that remains unchanged on a live page, and it does not take that page off the web. How to respond to a sustained decline
If you have ruled out measurement, technical, security, removal, migration, demand, and manual-action explanations, review the affected pages for usefulness, reliability, and a people-first purpose. Base changes on evidence about the pages and queries that moved. Do not delete sections or rewrite pages reflexively: a ranking shift alone does not prove that the content is defective, and small movements may not warrant changes.

There is no guaranteed recovery date. Google says improvements may take days to several months to be reflected as systems recrawl and reassess a site, and there is no guarantee of a noticeable impact. The practical goal is to fix identifiable problems and improve pages for their intended readers—not to trigger a reset.
