Review activity history, Timeline and location, ad personalization, YouTube history, connected apps, devices, profile visibility, and optional audio recording. These are separate controls—not one master privacy switch—and turning off future saving does not necessarily delete data already stored. Google is gradually updating its Search activity controls, so labels and available options may differ by account.
Start in Privacy Checkup, then review the activity controls
Google Privacy Checkup is a guided starting point for reviewing account privacy settings. Google says, “When it comes to privacy, we know one size doesn’t fit all.” Use it to find controls that match your priorities, then check service- or device-specific settings where relevant. Look for Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and YouTube History. They cover different kinds of activity. Depending on your account and the gradual rollout of Search controls, the exact label or layout may vary. Google says saved activity can support faster searches and more personalized recommendations. Google Account Help Google Search Help: Control what activity gets saved to your account
- Keep activity saving on if you value the associated history and personalization.
- Pause a category if you do not want new activity of that type saved to your account. Consider which history-based features you may lose or reduce.
Choose retention separately from whether activity is saved
Pausing future collection and deleting saved records are different actions. Use My Activity to find, filter, and delete activity already associated with your account. Google documents automatic deletion periods of 3, 18, or 36 months for Search Services History and Timeline; these are available setting choices, not a guarantee that every kind of data is covered by the same retention rule. Review the activity categories separately and select a retention period—or delete particular records—according to what you want to keep. Browser history is separate from My Activity, so deleting account activity does not necessarily clear a browser’s local history. Google Search Help
Check Timeline, location permissions, and photo data
Timeline can save precise location to your device regularly, even when Google apps are not in use. An encrypted backup to Google’s servers is optional. Pausing or deleting Timeline does not necessarily remove location-related information saved through Search Services History or Web & App Activity. Google Account Help

- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- Review Timeline and its backup option in your Google Account.
- Check location permissions on your phone and in individual apps; account controls do not replace device permissions.
- If location in photos concerns you, check the camera’s location-metadata setting as well.
Turning off or clearing one location control can reduce what is saved in that category, but it is not a universal deletion action for location data elsewhere.

Review Ad Settings or My Ad Center to manage interests and whether personal information is used to make ads more relevant. Turning off ad personalization addresses ad targeting; it does not itself pause Search Services History, Web & App Activity, or YouTube History. Review YouTube search and watch history before changing it
YouTube History covers searches and videos watched while signed in. Google says these histories help you find watched videos and improve recommendations; they may also be used for relevant ads. You can review or pause the history controls if you do not want new YouTube searches or views saved to the account. YouTube Help: Understanding the basics of privacy on YouTube apps
Consider the recommendation trade-off before pausing it: YouTube says that if history-based recommendations are turned off and there is no relevant recent watch history, homepage recommendations may be removed. Pausing history is not the same as deleting what is already saved.

Remove access you no longer recognize or need
Privacy Checkup and account settings can also help you review access and visibility, not just activity history. Check for unfamiliar signed-in devices, third-party apps you no longer use, and profile information whose visibility you want to change. Removing an app’s access limits its connection to your account; it is separate from deleting account activity. Google Account Help: Find, control & delete the info in your Google Account

Check optional audio recording separately
Voice and audio activity storage under Web & App Activity is off unless enabled. If it is on, turning it off stops new Assistant recordings from being saved with Web & App Activity. It does not delete earlier recordings or control audio stored by other Google products or on a device; deletion is a separate action. A practical review order
- Open Google Account and choose the Privacy Checkup workflow.
- Review Search Services History, Web & App Activity, and YouTube History, noting which categories you want saved for convenience or personalization.
- For each category you keep, check its retention controls; use My Activity when you want to inspect or delete existing records.
- Review Timeline, optional backup, device and app location permissions, and camera location metadata if location privacy is a priority.
- Open Ad Settings or My Ad Center to make a separate decision about personalized ads.
- Check signed-in devices, third-party app access, profile visibility, and the optional audio-recording setting if it applies to you.
For any setting, weigh four questions: what type of data it saves, which personalization or convenience it supports, how long it remains available, and whether related information may also exist in a browser, device, app, photos, or another Google service.
