Google Play offers a managed app-distribution channel and Google Play Protect checks apps from Play and other sources. Android also allows installs from alternative stores, but those stores set their own review, update, payment, and support policies. Neither a Play listing nor an alternative store is proof that an app is safe: compare how each source identifies developers, handles harmful apps, and delivers updates, then keep Android’s installation controls and Play Protect enabled.
What Google Play Protect does—and what it does not
Google says Play Protect checks apps obtained through Google Play before download and periodically scans the device. It also checks apps installed from outside Play. When it encounters an unknown app, it may prompt you to send the app to Google for analysis. If an app is identified as harmful, Play Protect may warn you, disable the app, block its installation, or remove it. These checks reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that every app is safe.

That device-level scanning is different from a store reviewing every app it distributes. Google says it does not review every app in third-party stores, and those stores may have different security and privacy policies. How to compare app stores
“Alternative app store” covers services with different operators and practices, so there is no supported blanket ranking of every store against Google Play. Use these distinctions when deciding where to get an app:

There is no directly comparable current malware-rate statistic in the cited official material that establishes how much safer one category of store is than another. Store policies and app outcomes vary, so a numerical safety ranking would overstate what is known.
What changes when you install outside Google Play
Android puts an explicit permission between you and an installation from an outside source. The exact menu labels differ by device maker and Android version.

- Android 8.0 and later: allow the particular app or source you are using to install unknown apps. After the installation, review that permission and turn it off if you no longer need it.
- Android 7.1.1 and older: the setting is the broader Unknown sources switch. Some installation flows may instead offer a one-time install.
Grant permission only when you intentionally use a source you trust. Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put the device and personal information at risk, including damage, data loss, or hacking. Google also says information about apps installed outside Play—including app-related URLs and device information—may be received to help detect harmful apps. That is a privacy consideration, not evidence that a breach occurred or that every scan sends the same information. Download apps to your Android device; Alternative distribution options.

As of October 4, 2026, Android’s developer-verification protections begin on September 30, 2026 for certified Android devices running Android 8 or later in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The initial stores named by Android Help are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. This is not a Google Play-only requirement.

Android says a wider rollout for all apps on certified devices is planned for 2027. The requirements do not apply to AOSP and non-certified devices, and Android Help also lists regional and Google Mobile Services exceptions. Users may be able to proceed with an unverified developer through an advanced flow with security checkpoints and a waiting period; Android Help describes a 24-hour delay in its user guidance. A safer routine for choosing and installing apps
- Start with the app maker’s official channel. Use Google Play or the developer’s verified site, and be cautious of download links reached through ads, messages, or unofficial mirrors.
- Check the publisher and store. Confirm the developer identity and read the store’s stated review, privacy, and harmful-app reporting policies. A familiar store name alone does not establish what it checks.
- Keep Play Protect enabled. It can check apps beyond Play, but treat its warnings as a safety layer rather than a guarantee.
- Limit outside-install permission. On Android 8.0 or later, grant it only to the source you mean to use and revoke it afterward; on older versions, be aware the setting may cover sources broadly.
- Know who is accountable. Before installing or paying, identify which store supplies updates and handles support or payment problems—Google Play does not take over those responsibilities for a third-party store.
