A properly configured home battery disconnects from the utility grid when power fails and supplies the circuits set up for backup. It may not run every appliance, and solar panels recharge it during an outage only if the system is designed to operate while isolated from the grid.
What happens when the grid goes down?
- The system detects the outage and separates from the grid. Grid-tied solar systems normally stop exporting electricity when utility service fails. A backup-capable system can detect the loss and switch into islanded operation, isolating the home from the utility for safe local power. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this transition in its Solar and Resilience Basics.
- The battery powers selected circuits. The inverter converts the battery’s stored energy into household AC power, while a controller or transfer equipment manages the connection. Which circuits receive power depends on how the system was configured; a battery does not automatically mean whole-home backup.
- Loads draw down stored energy. How long power lasts depends on usable energy in the battery and how much electricity the backed-up loads consume. The inverter’s output limit matters too: stored energy cannot run an appliance whose instantaneous demand exceeds the system’s capability.
- Solar may contribute power during daylight. If the inverter and controls support solar operation while islanded, panels can serve loads and recharge the battery. Whether generation keeps up depends on sunlight, clouds, time of day, household use, and system design.
- The system reconnects after utility service returns. Backup equipment is designed to reconnect after restoration, but the exact behavior depends on the installed system. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and confirm its operation with the installer.
Will the battery keep the whole house running?
Only if the system is designed and sized to do so. Some installations back up selected circuits rather than the entire home. Even when a circuit is backed up, the battery inverter has limits on continuous and short-duration peak power. A large appliance or several loads starting at once can exceed those limits.

Before an outage, check which circuits are connected to backup and whether essential appliances fit within the system’s output. Useful figures to review are usable capacity in kilowatt-hours (kWh), continuous output and peak output in kilowatts (kW). Capacity describes energy available over time; output describes how much power the system can deliver at once.

There is no reliable runtime answer from capacity alone. A battery’s duration depends on its usable stored energy, its current charge, and the combined consumption of the backed-up circuits. A home using only a few essential loads will draw energy more slowly than one running many appliances. Solar generation can extend operation if the system supports charging while islanded, but it is variable and may not keep pace with demand.

For scale, a Tesla Powerwall datasheet hosted by EnergySage lists 13.5 kWh of usable energy. That is a model-specific figure from a datasheet whose document date was not confirmed in the search result—not a specification for every battery or necessarily the current version. It does not, by itself, establish how long a particular home would stay powered.
Do solar panels work during an outage?
Ordinary grid-tied solar panels generally shut off when grid power disappears. This protects against sending electricity onto lines that utility workers may be repairing. Solar can continue contributing during an outage when a compatible system has storage, suitable inverter and control equipment, and the ability to operate in islanded mode. Panels alone are not enough: the Department of Energy says, “Technically, residential solar panels alone are not enough to make your home resilient.”

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
Even in an islanded system, solar output changes with daylight and weather. At night there is no solar generation, and clouds or heavy household use can mean the panels do not replenish the battery as quickly as loads use electricity.
What should you check about a battery backup system?
- Backed-up circuits: Identify exactly which circuits stay powered and whether the installation offers partial-home or whole-home backup.
- Capacity and output: Compare usable kWh with continuous and peak kW; these answer different questions about stored energy and simultaneous loads.
- Islanded solar capability: Ask whether the specific inverter and controls allow solar to operate and recharge the battery during a grid outage.
- System compatibility and requirements: Confirm compatibility with the utility and existing equipment, metering arrangements, installation needs, and applicable local building and fire-code rules. The Department of Energy’s Solar + Storage for Homes: A Builder’s Guide discusses planning and local requirements.
For a dated cost reference, EnergySage reported an average installed cost of $15,647 for a 13.5 kWh home battery before incentives in the first half of 2026. Its article was updated August 25, 2026; the marketplace average is not a quote for a particular home or location.

What to ask your installer before an outage
- Which circuits are backed up, and what happens if a backed-up appliance exceeds the system’s output?
- Can the solar array recharge the battery while the system is isolated from the grid?
- How does the system behave when utility power returns, and are there model-specific instructions to follow?
- Are the battery, inverter, service equipment, utility requirements, and local codes compatible with the planned configuration?
Do not bypass grid-isolation equipment or modify service equipment to keep solar running. The safety behavior of grid-tied systems is intentional; have a qualified installer assess any changes.
