The update also lets owners choose a category, rename a tag and set options such as Left-Behind Reminders during registration. Google lists the changes as phone features in release notes dated October 5, 2026; they are not a promise of immediate availability on every phone or compatibility with every tag.
What the NFC update does
Google’s Google Play services v26.39 release notes say: “With NFC support, you can quickly access Find Hub tag details and settings or identify lost tags when you tap the tag with your phone.” In practice, that covers two situations: an owner can tap a tag to reach its Find Hub information and settings, while someone who finds a lost tag can tap it to identify it, depending on the tag’s supported behavior.

This is an NFC feature for Find Hub network tags, not a claim that any NFC-equipped tracker or generic NFC tag will work. Google’s release note does not list compatible brands or models, nor does it say that every tag will reveal its owner’s personal details.

- Use a phone with NFC and hold it near the lost tag. The update describes identification by tapping, but Google has not published a device-by-device availability schedule in these notes.
- If the tag supports the behavior, the tap can open information that helps identify it. What information is available depends on the tag; the update does not guarantee that every tag displays owner details.
- Follow the information shown on the phone. Google documents an NFC identification step for AirTags in its unknown tracker alerts help page, including that some devices may share a serial number or other owner information. That AirTag guidance is not a guarantee about Find Hub tags.
Tag setup gets more options up front
During registration of a Find Hub network tag, v26.39 adds the ability to select a category, rename the tag and configure features such as Left-Behind Reminders. These choices can be made during setup rather than requiring a later trip back into the app to adjust them.

What you need—and what is not yet clear
The change is software in Google Play services; it does not make a particular tracker brand necessary. To track belongings, you still need a Find Hub-compatible Bluetooth tracker tag or other supported item. Google’s Find Hub app listing describes finding phones, tablets, headphones and other accessories, including offline devices, through the network.
- Version: Google lists Play services v26.39 with a date of October 5, 2026.
- Scope: The NFC and registration additions are labeled “[Phone]” in the notes. The release does not specify a complete rollout schedule by phone or region.
- Compatibility: The notes do not provide a brand-by-brand list. Check that a specific tag supports Google Find Hub and the relevant NFC identification behavior before buying.
- Availability: A phone tap may not work until the feature reaches that device, and the release notes do not say it is live for everyone at once.
Privacy: identification is not the same as tracker alerts
Tag identification and unknown-tracker alerts are related safety features, but Google describes their data handling separately. The Find Hub app listing says network location data is encrypted and not visible even to Google. For unknown-tracker alerts, Android Help says location and detection timestamps are temporarily processed and stored in encrypted form on-device, not shared with Google or other users. Those descriptions concern distinct data flows and should not be treated as one explanation of what happens when a finder taps a tag.

A separate travel use: sharing a tag’s location with an airline
Find Hub’s luggage-recovery feature is separate from the NFC update. Google announced in March 2026 that users could share the location of a compatible tag with participating airlines when luggage goes missing. The app creates a secure link that the owner can stop sharing at any time; links expire after seven days, and sharing is disabled when the phone detects that the item has returned to its owner. Google said at announcement that more than 10 major global airlines accepted Find Hub locations, naming Ajet, Air India, China Airlines, Lufthansa Group airlines, Saudia Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. That is Google’s dated announcement, not a current independently verified airline count. Google also said it was working with Samsonite on compatible suitcase designs; this is not required for NFC tag identification, and availability depends on the specific model.
