One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Google Play is requesting location to show local recommendations, it’s trying to tailor what you see based on where your device is (or appears to be). This can affect items like app availability, promotions, and region-specific content.
You don’t have to blindly accept every prompt. With a few Android settings changes, you can allow location when you want it, deny it when you don’t, or restrict it to approximate location so you get recommendations without unnecessary precision.

This guide covers the real-world options, where the toggles live in Android, and what to do when the prompt keeps coming back.
Why Google Play is requesting location
Google Play may request location when it needs to estimate your region more accurately than IP-based estimates. Even if you’re in the same country, local targeting can change things like featured apps, event-based promotions, and “near you” style recommendations.

Common triggers include:
- First-time setup: after an update, a fresh install, or when the permission hasn’t been decided yet.
- Changes to your location environment: new SIM, travel, or turning Location Services off and back on.
- Device profile updates: Android privacy changes (e.g., “approximate vs precise”) or updated Play components.
- Google Play’s personalization: services that support recommendations may ask for location to improve relevance.
Before you change anything: prerequisites and what to check
Before granting or denying, verify you’re seeing the prompt in the right place and your device is functioning normally.
- Confirm it’s Google Play: the prompt should mention Google Play or Google services, not a random app.
- Check Android version: the exact menu wording varies by Android 10/11/12/13/14 and by manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, etc.).
- Make sure Location Services exist: go to your Android Location settings and confirm Location is not fully disabled system-wide.
- Know your preference: if you only want local recommendations sometimes, pick an approach you can toggle quickly later.
What location permission actually does in Google Play
On modern Android, “Location” permissions are typically granular. You may see choices like:
- Allow only while using (temporary access while Play is open)
- Allow all the time (persistent access)
- Approximate location (less precise)
- Precise location (GPS-level accuracy)
If you don’t see the exact option, it may be because your Android version or device manufacturer uses a different privacy UI. The goal is the same: reduce precision if you don’t want detailed tracking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOption A: Allow location so local recommendations work
If you’re fine with local targeting and want the recommendations to match where you are, allow location—but choose the least invasive setting available.
From the prompt
When the Google Play prompt appears, select the option that matches your comfort level. If you’re given a choice between “While using” and “Allow all the time,” choose “While using.”
- Open Google Play.
- When the location prompt appears, tap Allow or Allow while using.
- If you see a choice for Approximate vs Precise, pick Approximate.
From Android Settings
Use Android’s app permission screen to confirm the permission is set the way you want it.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy or Location (menu names vary).
- Tap App permissions or Permissions.
- Find Google Play.
- Tap Location and choose Allow only while using (or deny if you prefer).
Option B: Deny location but stop or reduce local targeting
If you don’t want Google Play to use location, denying permission is the simplest approach. The tradeoff is that “local” features may look less relevant or may switch to IP-based guesses.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select Google Play.
- Tap Permissions or App permissions.
- Tap Location.
- Choose Deny.
If the “request location” prompt reappears, it usually means either the permission is still effectively allowed (maybe a different Google component) or you denied it in one place but not in another (common with “Google” and “Google Play services”).
Option C: Keep location enabled, but restrict precision and reduce sharing
You can often keep the benefits of region-based recommendations without granting precise GPS location. If your device supports it, set Google Play to use approximate location.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Location settings.
- Ensure Location Services is turned on (so the permission mode matters).
- Open Apps > Google Play.
- Tap Permissions > Location.
- Select Approximate location if available.
If approximate location isn’t offered, look for “Precision” toggles elsewhere in your Android privacy menus. Some manufacturer skins place this under “Location permission” or “Improve accuracy.”
Stop the permission prompt from returning (common fixes)
When you deny location, Google Play shouldn’t keep prompting repeatedly. If it does, work through the following fixes in order. Most cases are one of the issues below.

Confirm the right permission toggle for Location
Sometimes the prompt is driven by a related service (like Google Play services) rather than Google Play itself. Check both.

- Open Google Play services and check Permissions > Location.
- Open the Google app and check its Location permission (if shown).
Set each one to the same behavior you want: denied, while using, or approximate.
Turn on Location Services and device-level settings
This sounds backward when you’re trying to deny, but it helps when the prompt keeps appearing due to a mismatch. Android may keep requesting because it can’t satisfy an expected location state.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Turn on Use Location or Location Services.
- Check whether you have an option like Improve accuracy (Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth scanning).
- For a privacy-light approach, prefer Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth-based approximation only if it’s clearly separated in your UI.
If you truly want no location at all, you can keep Location Services off, but then expect some app features to degrade and the prompt may behave inconsistently depending on device firmware.
Fix Google Play services and Google app dependencies
Permission prompts can become “sticky” if Play components are misconfigured or partially updated. Clearing the right cache can help without wiping your downloads.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Open Google Play services.
- Tap Storage > Clear cache.
- Return to Apps and open Google.
- Tap Storage > Clear cache.
Avoid “Clear data” unless you’ve tried cache first. Clearing data can reset some personalization and sign-in flows depending on your configuration.
Update Google Play and Google app
Outdated components can keep an older permission flow. Make sure Google Play and Google app are current.
- Open Google Play.
- Tap your profile icon > Manage apps & device.
- Tap Updates available and install all updates.
Then update the Google app the same way if you use it for account-related permissions.

Reset app preferences (only if needed)
If you changed permissions, stopped services, or disabled toggles accidentally, “resetting app preferences” can restore default states that stop repeated permission nags.
- Go to Settings > Apps.
- Tap More (three dots) > Reset app preferences.
- Confirm.
- Recheck Google Play services and Google Play location permissions after reboot.
This doesn’t delete your apps, but it can reset defaults like notification permissions and background restrictions. Only use it when needed.
Edge cases and gotchas
- “Deny” but still prompted: Check both Google Play and Google Play services permissions. Denying one may not stop the other.
- Permission is set to “Allow while using,” but prompt appears on startup: Some devices interpret “using” differently (e.g., background checks after a Play update). Switching to “Approximate” can reduce intensity.
- Developer options / mock locations: If your device has a mock location app enabled, Google may request updated location signals or behave differently in recommendations.
- Location mode is off: If Location Services are fully disabled, Google Play may fall back to region estimates but could still prompt if it expects a specific permission state.
- Work profile or managed device: In corporate or school-managed Android profiles, permissions may be controlled by an admin policy, causing repeated prompts.
- Travel and SIM changes: If you switch carriers or regions quickly, you may see repeated “local recommendations” logic.
Comparing choices: allowing vs denying vs approximate location
Use this decision table to pick a settings posture that matches your privacy comfort.
| Choice | What you get | Privacy impact | What to expect in Google Play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow location while using | Better local relevance | Moderate (temporary) | Local recommendations update more accurately |
| Allow all the time | Most consistent targeting | Higher (persistent) | Fewer “why is it asking” moments |
| Approximate location | Region-level recommendations | Lower (less precision) | Local content works without GPS-level detail |
| Deny location | Basic recommendations | Lowest | Local targeting may be weaker; prompt should stop if configured correctly |

If you change permissions and the prompt still returns, use this checklist to systematically isolate the cause.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check Google Play location permission again (confirm it didn’t reset after an update).
- Check Google Play services location permission (set it to the same decision).
- Toggle Location Services: turn Location off, reboot, then turn it on (or leave it off) depending on your goal.
- Clear cache for Google Play services (and Google app) without clearing data.
- Update both Google Play and Google app from Manage apps & device.
- Restart the phone and re-open Google Play after the restart.
- Reset app preferences if you previously disabled related services or changed background settings.
- If it’s a managed device: check with your IT admin policy; you may not be allowed to deny location.
FAQs
Why does Google Play ask for location even if I already denied it?
Most of the time, you denied location for Google Play but not for Google Play services (or the reverse). Confirm location permission for both. Also check whether an update reset permission toggles.
Will denying location prevent me from downloading apps?
Usually no. Google Play generally downloads apps normally. The main difference is that “local recommendations” and some region-targeted features may become less accurate or less frequent.

Can I allow location but keep it approximate?
Yes, if your Android version offers the precision choice. Look for “Approximate location” in the Google Play permission screen or in the location permission precision settings. Choosing approximate reduces how precise the location can be.
Does Google Play use my exact GPS coordinates?
Only if you grant precise location permission. If you select approximate (or deny location), Play should use less detailed region signals. Your exact behavior depends on your permission mode and Android’s location settings like Wi‑Fi scanning.
What if the prompt keeps popping up after every app update?
That pattern suggests permission state mismatches across related services. Update Google Play and Google Play services, then verify location permissions for both. Clearing cache for Google Play services can also help.
Is there a way to get local recommendations without location permission?
Sometimes Google uses IP-based region estimates. You can deny location and still see a degree of regional relevance, but it won’t be as accurate as device location-based targeting.
Bottom Line
Google Play requests location to make local recommendations more relevant, usually by improving regional targeting. You can allow it temporarily, restrict it to approximate location, or deny it—without breaking app downloads.
If the prompt keeps returning, check permissions for both Google Play and Google Play services, then update Play components and clear Play services cache. That combination resolves the majority of repeated-request issues on Android.
