Google is rolling out Nest Protect support to the Google Home app, bringing smoke and carbon monoxide awareness into the same hub you already use for lights, cameras, thermostats, and more.
If you’ve been managing Nest Protect in the Nest app (or only through web history), this change matters because it consolidates control, visibility, and notifications in one place—without you having to switch apps during a safety event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is especially useful if you already depend on Google Home for daily automations and shared access. Instead of treating Nest Protect as a separate ecosystem, you can make it part of your home’s overall automation and monitoring setup.
Prerequisites before you try
Before troubleshooting or re-adding anything, confirm the basics. The rollout is staged, so your device support depends on app version and account linking.
Check you’re using the latest Google Home app
Open the Google Home app listing in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the latest version available for your phone. Rollouts often require a newer app build before devices appear.

Your Nest Protect must be linked to the Google account that is currently signed into the Google Home app. If you use multiple accounts (work vs personal), it’s easy to end up in a “half-linked” state.
Confirm your Nest Protect is online
Alarms that haven’t checked in recently may not surface immediately in Google Home. If you recently changed Wi‑Fi, upgraded your router, or reset your home network, give the device a few minutes to reconnect.
How to add and view Nest Protect in the Google Home app
Depending on your current setup, Nest Protect may appear automatically after the rollout. If it doesn’t, use the steps below to ensure it’s connected and visible.
Step 1: Update and open Google Home
Update the Google Home app, then open it and wait for it to finish loading your home. If you’re on Wi‑Fi, it’s usually best to stay on Wi‑Fi until setup completes.
Step 2: Check the Home screen for your devices
Go to your home dashboard and look under the devices list for labels like Nest Protect, Smoke/CO Detector, or a Protect device name you assigned previously.

Device settings
Look for a Settings gear icon inside the Protect device page. Common categories include notification preferences, device information, and alarm-related options.
Notification behavior
Some alert preferences may be controlled directly at the device level, while others are governed by global notification settings in the Home app and your phone’s OS settings.
Notifications and safety alerts: how to make them reliable
Safety notifications are only useful if they actually reach you. After the rollout, verify both in-app and system-level notification permissions.
Verify Google Home app notification settings
- Open the Google Home app.
- Go to Settings (often from your profile icon).
- Find Notifications.
- Confirm alerts relevant to Nest Protect are enabled (wording may include safety, alarm, or device events).
Verify iPhone or Android notification permissions
On iPhone, check Settings > Notifications > Google Home. On Android, check Settings > Apps > Google Home > Notifications. Enable all relevant categories and ensure no “Focus mode” or “Do Not Disturb” rule is blocking them.

Automations you can build with Nest Protect events
Once Nest Protect is visible in Google Home, you can incorporate it into routines and automations—useful for turning on lights, sounding other devices, or alerting through speakers when your area supports it.
Use routines for non-alarm responses
Depending on your region and device capabilities, you might be able to create routines that respond to event triggers (such as an alert state) by enabling actions like turning on lights, starting announcements on compatible Google devices, or sending notifications to your household.
What to watch for
- Not every Protect event is available as a routine trigger.
- Some alarm states may behave differently than informational states (like battery warnings).
- Voice/announcement actions depend on which speaker displays and services you have enabled.
Troubleshooting: Nest Protect not showing up
If the Google Home app rollout hasn’t surfaced your Nest Protect, use this checklist in order. Most fixes are account or permissions related.
1) Force a relink by verifying your account
In the Google Home app, confirm the Google account in use matches the one that owns Nest Protect. If you recently changed passwords, enabled 2FA, or switched devices/accounts, relinking may be required.
2) Re-scan your devices
- Open Google Home.
- Tap Add (+).
- Choose Set up device > Works with Google.
- Go through prompts to re-discover Nest Protect.
3) Restart the phone app (not just the phone)
Close the Google Home app completely, then reopen it. If you’re on Android, remove it from recents; on iPhone, swipe it away from the app switcher.
4) Check network connectivity
If your Protect device recently changed Wi‑Fi or network settings, allow several minutes for reconnect and state sync. Unstable connectivity can delay discovery.
5) Confirm the rollout is complete for your account
Rollouts are staged. Even with the latest app installed, some accounts may not get Nest Protect integration immediately. If it still doesn’t appear after updating and re-adding, try again later.
Troubleshooting: alerts, history, or sound not behaving
Seeing the device is one problem; getting accurate alert behavior is another. If Nest Protect events aren’t showing in Home, check these areas.

Verify notification toggles in both places
It’s common to have in-app notifications enabled but OS-level permissions disabled. Re-check both settings screens after the update.
Clear and re-check Do Not Disturb / Focus
If you use iPhone Focus or Android notification schedules, they can block Google Home alerts. Temporarily disable relevant restrictions to confirm behavior.
Restart any required Google devices for announcements
If you created routines that announce alerts on speakers or displays, make sure those devices are online and that their Home permissions are still valid.

If you rely on history, confirm which app holds it
Some event history views can still be tied to the Nest app experience depending on feature availability and region. If you need a complete safety timeline, check both apps until Google Home fully matches your expectations.
Comparing options: Nest app vs Google Home app
The biggest difference is workflow. Google Home is your central control panel; the Nest app can still serve as the deeper Nest device management interface.
Google Home app strengths
- Unified device dashboard for your whole smart home.
- Consistent notification and access management across household members.
- Routines/automations tied to other Home devices.
Nest app strengths
- Potentially more detailed Protect-specific configuration depending on feature coverage.
- Event history and device management that may be more complete for some users.
Privacy, account linking, and device access
Because this integration is account-based, it’s important to understand who can view Protect status and receive alerts.
Shared access and visibility
When you share your Google Home, you’re sharing access to devices in that home. Review the people allowed in your home and their roles, especially if you have guests or temporary occupants.
Data handling expectations
Google Home and Nest services use your linked account to display device status. Keep an eye on sign-in sessions if you’ve recently used a new phone or computer.

- No notification permissions: You enable device alerts in Home but forget OS-level notification settings.
- Wrong home: You manage multiple Google Home homes and expect devices to appear in the wrong one.
- Assuming instant rollout: Staged rollouts may require waiting even with the latest app version.
FAQ
Will my Nest Protect automatically appear in Google Home?
For some users, yes after the rollout and app update. For others, you may need to re-add via Works with Google or ensure your Protect is fully online.
Do I still need the Nest app?
You might, depending on how complete the feature coverage is for your model and region. Many people can rely on Google Home for daily monitoring, while keeping the Nest app for deeper device management or history.
Can other household members get Nest Protect alerts?
They can, but each person must have their own phone notification permissions enabled. Also confirm they’re added to your Google Home and have access to the home where Protect is installed.

Bottom Line
The Google Home app starting to roll out Nest Protect support is a practical upgrade: it pulls smoke and CO monitoring into the same interface where most people manage their smart home and routines. If your Protect device isn’t showing up, update the app, verify the correct Google account, confirm device connectivity, and validate notifications at both the app and OS levels.
Once your setup is confirmed, you’ll be able to monitor Protect status and build more consistent home responses—so you’re not switching apps when you need the information fastest.
