Google explains broad factors that can shape Play recommendations, while Valve describes Steam’s features and placements. Neither platform’s cited public documentation gives a complete current ranking formula.
Where you discover games
Google Play Games
Finding a game through Google Play Games is connected to Google Play’s wider storefront. Depending on the device and interface, discovery may involve recommendations, search, browsing, game pages, or editorial selections. Google says discovery can differ by surface and device, so the options and presentation should not be assumed to be identical on Android phones and tablets and Android TV. See Google Play’s instructions for finding games.

Google describes Play discovery as an evolving experience: “We constantly test and optimize the discovery experience on Google Play, from adding new discovery pages, to experimenting with different visual formats and layouts, and enhancing our ranking algorithms.” (Google Play Console Help.)
Steam
Steam makes its discovery routes more explicit. Its store documentation describes recommendations, curator recommendations, friends’ reviews, popular releases, genre and tag browsing, and the Discovery Queue. Valve’s Steam Discovery Update page dates its original Discovery Queue description to the 2014-era update: “Your Steam Discovery Queue is a powerful, new way of exploring the most popular new releases that you haven’t yet seen.” That is historical launch-era wording, not a claim that the feature or its description was newly introduced.

What can shape recommendations
Google Play: account and store context
Google says Play personalization may use Play History, Play content such as purchased or downloaded items, and Google Account information. It also describes broader discovery and ranking factors, including the surface, query, device, app quality, editorial value, user experience, advertising, and personal preferences. The factors and their relative importance vary by context; Google does not publish a complete formula on the cited ranking page.

Google’s personalization settings let users limit the use of account information for Play personalization. Turning personalization off does not mean every result becomes identical for every user: Google says device, country, and installed apps may still affect the experience. Details and controls are documented in Manage personalization and history on Google Play.
Steam: activity and community signals
Valve’s Discovery Update materials describe recommendations connected to activity and community signals, including games played, wishlist items, and friends’ recommendations. That page documents features from the update era; it should not be read as a complete or current specification of Steam’s recommendation algorithm. Valve’s current public-facing developer documentation describes discovery placements, but not a full formula for ranking individual recommendations.

What controls do you get?
On Google Play, the main documented personalization controls concern Play personalization and history. The available game-finding experience depends on where you use Play, including your device and the particular surface.
Steam’s discovery tools let users respond to suggestions and customize discovery areas. Depending on the feature, users can follow a curator, wishlist or purchase a game, or ignore a suggestion. The practical difference is that Steam presents several distinct routes and actions in its store, while Google Play’s game recommendations sit within a wider app-store discovery and personalization system.

Which discovery experience fits your browsing style?
- Use Google Play Games when you want to find games within the Android app-store context and are comfortable with recommendations alongside search, browsing, and other Play surfaces.
- Use Steam’s discovery tools when you want to deliberately move among distinct routes such as tags, curator opinions, friends’ reviews, or a queue of suggested games.
- For either service, treat a recommendation as a starting point. The public materials explain some signals and controls, but do not establish that one platform is objectively more accurate or better at matching a particular player.
