Google lists the same runtime estimates for each matching case size and similar display, chip-family and sensor specifications. The more concrete changes are Wear OS 7.0, twice the listed storage, touchless gestures, a revised band material and a newer minimum Android requirement. Whether those are worth paying for depends on your phone, the price gap and which new features you will use.
Pixel Watch 5 vs. Pixel Watch 4: the main differences
Comparing the same case size avoids mixing model changes with the different capacities and runtimes of the 41 mm and 45 mm watches. Here is what Google lists for each generation:

| Specification | Pixel Watch 5 | Pixel Watch 4 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case sizes | 41 mm and 45 mm | 41 mm and 45 mm | Choose by fit; compare like sizes. |

| Processor | Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated, with Cortex-M55 co-processor | Snapdragon W5 Gen 2, with Cortex-M55 co-processor | Both use the same named chip family. Google separately claims the Watch 5 is 20% faster, but its product page does not explain the basis of that comparison. |
| Operating system | Wear OS 7.0 | Wear OS 6.0 | The Watch 5 ships with the newer listed version; these specifications do not establish a support period. |
| Storage | 64 GB eMMC flash | 32 GB eMMC flash and 2 GB SDRAM | The Watch 5 has twice the listed flash storage. |
| Phone compatibility | Most phones running Android 12.0 or newer | Most phones running Android 11.0 or newer | Some phones that meet the Watch 4 minimum do not meet the Watch 5 minimum. |

Does the Pixel Watch 5 have better battery life?
Not according to Google’s published estimates for equivalent sizes. The Watch 5 has slightly larger listed battery capacities, but its stated runtimes match the Watch 4. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
| Case size | Watch 5 battery and estimate | Watch 4 battery and estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 41 mm | 332 mAh; up to 30 hours with always-on display, or 48 hours in Battery Saver | 325 mAh; up to 30 hours with always-on display, or 48 hours in Battery Saver |
| 45 mm | 465 mAh; up to 40 hours with always-on display, or 72 hours in Battery Saver | 455 mAh; up to 40 hours with always-on display, or 72 hours in Battery Saver |
The 45 mm versions have higher capacity and longer Google estimates than the 41 mm versions in either generation. That is a case-size difference, not evidence that the Watch 5 lasts longer than the Watch 4.
Are the display, chip and sensors substantially different?
Google lists the same display resolution and peak brightness for both generations: a 320 ppi AMOLED LTPO display rated up to 3,000 nits. Both use the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip family with a Cortex-M55 co-processor. Google’s Watch 5 page describes its processor as “Accelerated” and claims a 20% speed increase, but does not explain the comparison method; treat that as Google’s claim rather than an independently verified result.

The official sensor lists are broadly similar. Both include ECG-compatible electrical sensors, multi-path optical heart-rate sensing, SpO2-related sensors, cEDA and far-field skin-temperature sensing. The specifications do not support calling the Watch 5 a major sensor-generation upgrade.
Both generations list health and fitness features such as ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, continuous heart-rate monitoring, sleep insights and workout tools. Google’s comparison page marks some Google Health options—including advanced strength training, a custom workout builder and certain health trends—as “Coming soon.” Availability can change by rollout, date and region, so check Google’s current feature listing. Health metrics and notifications are not medical diagnoses.

Will your Android phone work with the Pixel Watch 5?
Google specifies Android 12.0 or newer for the Watch 5, compared with Android 11.0 or newer for the Watch 4. Both require a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. If your phone is on Android 11, it may meet the Watch 4 requirement but not the Watch 5 requirement. Check your phone’s Android version before choosing the newer watch.

The LTE Watch 5 can be used away from the phone after activation with a compatible carrier. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi requires the phone nearby or a Wi-Fi connection for connectivity. Carrier availability and plan terms vary; check the US configuration page and Google’s product connectivity FAQ, then confirm details with your carrier. The listed Google Store prices and configurations may change.

Consider the Pixel Watch 5 if…
- You want Wear OS 7.0 and 64 GB of listed flash storage.
- You expect to use touchless one-handed gestures.
- You prefer the Watch 5’s revised HNBR Active Band material.

- You value the same published battery estimates, display figures and broad sensor set at a lower price.
