Pixel Search is the better starting point for finding things on your phone as well as the web. Search in the Google app is Google Search, with web results, filters and optional Google Account-based personal results. For searching something you can already see in another app, use Circle to Search—a separate feature, not another name for either search box.
What’s the difference?
The key difference is the search surface and its scope. Pixel Search combines documented phone sources with web results. Google app Search focuses on Google Search and its tools; optional personal results can draw on information associated with your Google Account. Neither interface guarantees that every possible item or answer will appear: available results depend on the query, settings, device, account and other factors.

What Pixel Search can find
Google says Pixel phone search can find content from both the phone and the web. Its documented sources include apps and content from apps, contacts and apps used to connect with them, settings, apps in the Play Store, recent screenshot thumbnails, Google Assistant actions and Pixel tips. Search by swiping up on the Home screen, entering a query and tapping a result. See Google’s Pixel phone search instructions.
That list describes available source categories, not a promise that every app’s internal content is indexed on every Pixel. Google specifically says Pixel 11 series users can search for particular information in Gmail, Clock and alarms, Messages, Drive and Photos. Treat that in-app capability as model-specific; it does not establish the same depth of search on other Pixel generations.

Choose which app sources appear
To adjust the apps included in Pixel Search, open Home settings → Search settings → Control search results. Google documents this control for turning app sources on or off. The available sources and their behavior may depend on the phone and enabled features.
Use Pixel Search for web-only results
Pixel Search can include device results, but Google documents tapping the Home-screen search bar as the route to search the web only. If you want Google Search’s filters or account-linked options, the Google app Search experience is another place to start.

What Google app Search adds
Search in the Google app is Google Search, not the same thing as Pixel’s list of device sources. Google documents filters for content types including Images, Videos, News and Shopping. It also describes a Personal tool for finding content shared with the signed-in user in Google products such as Gmail. That Search tool is distinct from Pixel Search’s broader phone-source controls.

Personal results are optional
When enabled, Google app personal results may include autocomplete predictions based on Search history, personal answers based on Google Account information—Google gives upcoming flights from Gmail as an example—and recommendations based on activity, such as ideas for what to watch or where to eat. These are possibilities, not guaranteed answers for every query. Google says personalization may affect only some results, their order or the placement of result blocks. Even with personalized recommendations off, Search can still use context such as location, language, device type and current searches to improve relevance. Read Google’s Google app settings help and personalization guidance.
Discover is a feed, not a search box
Discover in the Google app can show updates about interests without you entering a search. It is useful for browsing, but it is not a way to search phone files or a substitute for a typed query. Google says Discover availability varies across languages and countries; its recommendations can use account activity, location and other settings. Details are in Google’s Discover help.
When Circle to Search is the better choice
Circle to Search is for content already displayed on screen. Hold the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble over or tap the text or image you want to look up. Search results appear while the original app remains available underneath. Google’s help page says the feature is available on Pixel 6 and later, but it may not work in some confidential apps, including banking and medical apps. Follow Google’s Circle to Search instructions for the supported-device details.
