What Google Photos can edit on mobile
Google documents a shared set of basic editing tasks for Android and iPhone: trimming, speed changes, cropping and rotating, exporting a frame, adjusting the image, and applying filters or effects. These controls are for editing a clip; exporting a frame instead saves a still image from it.

Google’s Android guide also notes that some crop, straighten, and filter features need Android 6.0 or later and 1 GB RAM, and that video editing is not supported on non-Pixel devices running Android 9. The iPhone and iPad guide requires iOS 16 or later. These are requirements attached to particular tools, not a guarantee that every control will appear on every compatible device. Google does not give one app-version number that guarantees all tools; menus and availability can vary.

Stabilize shaky footage or enhance its appearance
On Android, Google places these options under Auto. Choose Stabilize to address shaky footage or Enhance to adjust color and lighting. The cited iOS guide does not establish the same Auto workflow for iPhone and iPad.
Crop, rotate, or straighten
- Open the clip’s editor and select Crop.
- Choose an aspect ratio if you need a particular frame shape.
- Rotate in 90-degree increments, or use the straighten control where available.
Android’s guide also lists mirroring and automatic straightening for some videos. Those controls are not documented as universal across devices.

Adjust brightness, color, or filters
Available adjustment controls can include brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, warmth, tint, and vignette. Select an adjustment and change its value to suit the clip. To use a filter, choose one and adjust its strength where that control is offered; effects appear as a separate control in Google’s instructions. Access to selected adjustments and effects depends on the platform’s OS and RAM requirements in the comparison above.
Change the playback speed
- Open the video editor and select the speed control.
- Use the trim handles to select the segment whose speed you want to change.
- Choose 2× or 4× to speed it up, or ½× or ¼× to slow it down.
- Save the edited copy using the control shown in the app.

Extra video tools documented for Android
Add text
Google’s Android video-editing guide documents adding text to a video. The cited iOS guide does not list this workflow, so do not assume it is available on iPhone or iPad.
Add downloaded music
On Android, Google describes selecting a downloaded song, choosing the portion to use, and balancing the soundtrack against the video’s original audio. Google Photos needs permission to access music and audio on the device. Google’s Highlight video guidance says accompanying music is for personal, non-commercial use only; the documented workflow does not establish rights for monetized use.

Mute or reduce unwanted sound
The Android guide documents muting on non-Pixel devices and Audio Eraser on Pixel 8 and later. These are distinct, device-specific controls; they are not a universal Android feature set. The iOS guide documents muting.
Separate AI creation tools
Photo to video and Video remix are creative tools, not ordinary trim or color controls. Google describes Video remix templates for background replacement, relighting, and art styles. Its Android and iOS guidance says the source video must be backed up and under 60 seconds, and the selected portion must be one to 10 seconds. Access and generation limits can vary; Google says a Google AI subscription can provide more generations after a user runs out, and those details may change.
