Get a flu vaccine each season, then combine it with practical steps that reduce exposure and transmission: stay away from people who are sick, cover coughs and sneezes, clean your hands, and improve indoor air where possible. No single measure guarantees you will avoid influenza. U.S. CDC guidance recommends annual vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older, subject to current clinical guidance; recommendations may differ by country.
Start with a flu vaccine each season
The CDC calls annual vaccination the single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and potentially serious complications. Vaccination can also lessen illness severity if you still get flu, but it does not provide complete protection. See the CDC’s current seasonal flu prevention guidance for U.S. recommendations, which can change from season to season.

Where possible, get vaccinated before flu begins circulating locally. The WHO says it can take up to two weeks for vaccine protection to develop; vaccination later in the season can still help. Recommendations are not identical in every jurisdiction, so follow the guidance where you live. (WHO, March 4, 2026.)

Use everyday measures to reduce exposure and spread
Influenza spreads mainly through respiratory droplets when someone with flu coughs, sneezes, or talks. WHO also describes spread through small airborne particles and contaminated hands. Because transmission can happen in more than one way, combine measures rather than relying on just one. (CDC; WHO.)

| Action | How it helps | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Keep distance from people who are sick | Reduces close contact with someone who may be transmitting flu. | At home, work, school, and in shared indoor settings. |
| Cover coughs and sneezes | Helps limit the spread of respiratory droplets. | Whenever you cough or sneeze; dispose of tissues and clean your hands. |
| Wash hands often; use alcohol-based hand rub when soap and water are unavailable | Reduces the chance of transferring germs from hands. | Throughout the day, especially after coughing, sneezing, or handling used tissues. |
| Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth | Helps limit transfer from contaminated hands. | As an everyday habit, particularly in shared settings. |
| Clean frequently touched surfaces | Supports hygiene by addressing commonly touched surfaces. | As one part of prevention, not a replacement for vaccination, hand hygiene, or staying home when ill. |
These steps complement vaccination; they do not guarantee that you will not catch or spread flu. CDC’s healthy habits guidance covers these actions.
Improve indoor air when you can
Cleaner air can reduce exposure to respiratory viruses. CDC suggests bringing in fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors. Choose what is practical for the setting: open windows or increase outdoor air when feasible, meet outside when appropriate, or use available air purification indoors. A purifier is one possible tool, not a guarantee against flu and not a substitute for vaccination or other prevention steps. (CDC cleaner-air guidance.)

Stay home when you are sick
If you have respiratory-virus symptoms, stay home and away from others until both conditions have been true for at least 24 hours: your symptoms are improving overall, and you have had no fever without using fever-reducing medicine. This is not simply a 24-hour wait from when symptoms begin or a fever-free period on its own. After returning to normal activities, take additional precautions to protect others, as described in CDC’s current guidance.
Use masks according to the situation
CDC’s influenza-specific interim guidance does not recommend community mask use by people without symptoms as a general measure to prevent influenza exposure. If you have symptoms and cannot stay home, CDC says you may consider wearing a mask around others. (CDC influenza mask guidance, January 5, 2026.)

Broader CDC respiratory-virus guidance presents masks as an additional prevention strategy in circumstances such as crowded spaces, periods of increased virus circulation, or time spent around people at higher risk. Fit and context matter. This broader advice is not the same as a general recommendation for asymptomatic people to mask specifically to prevent influenza. (CDC respiratory-virus mask guidance, August 18, 2025.)

WHO identifies pregnant people, children under 5, adults over 65, people with chronic conditions, immunocompromised people, and health-care workers with increased exposure as groups at higher risk of severe seasonal influenza. If you are in one of these groups and become ill, seek clinical advice promptly about treatment. Contact a clinician promptly for severe symptoms as well. This is general prevention guidance, not a diagnosis or individualized medical advice. (WHO, March 4, 2026.)
