Google Photos is rolling out a Collections redesign that’s replacing the traditional Library tab. If you rely on Library to hop into albums or manage your saved content, expect a different navigation path and a slightly different mental model.
This guide breaks down what changed, where to find what you’re used to, and what to do when Collections don’t appear (or don’t look right) after the update.

Google Photos has introduced a redesigned Collections area to organize your memories in a more glanceable way. The intent is to make it easier to get to themed groupings—like highlights, people-based groupings, and time-based sets—without treating everything like a manually curated inventory.
#1 Best Overall
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Instead of starting from “Library,” you’ll typically start from “Collections” and then use Search or filters when you need something very specific.
Which users see the change (and what you might notice)
Google Photos rollouts are typically gradual and server-driven. That means you might see the new Collections experience on one device first, while another device still shows the older Library tab.
- You may notice the bottom navigation changes: Library may be removed or replaced with Collections.
- Some “album-like” entry points may appear in Collections, even if you previously accessed them via Library.
- UI labels and ordering can vary by app version and region, even for the same account.
If you can’t find the Library tab after updating, that’s expected—your entry point has moved.

How the Library tab is being replaced
Historically, the Library tab was the main hub for albums, archives, and other organization tools. In the redesigned experience, Collections becomes the more prominent hub.
Practically, it changes your workflow like this:
- Before: Library → Albums (and other library items)
- After: Collections → look for themed groupings first, then use Search or switch to album management when you need a specific set
The important nuance: Collections doesn’t always mean “your manual albums.” It’s a broader organization layer that can surface curated groupings and automated sets.
How to find your photos and albums after the redesign
Most users want two things after an interface change: (1) access to their manual albums and (2) a reliable way to browse by time. Here are the fastest routes.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
On Android (Google Photos app)
Follow these steps to locate albums and other organization features after the Library tab disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Google Photos.
- Tap the bottom navigation item labeled Collections (it may appear as a tab or as the primary hub).
- Look for an area that includes Albums. If you don’t see it immediately, use the app’s internal navigation (often a menu icon or an item list within Collections).
- If you just want to browse by time, go to Photos (or the main feed tab), then scroll to relevant dates.
- For something specific (like a trip), use Search at the top and type the keyword, location, or person name.
On iPhone and iPad (Google Photos app)
On iOS, the layout can differ slightly, but the goal is the same: use Collections as the hub and Search when you need precision.
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap Collections in the bottom navigation bar.
- Find Albums inside Collections (it may appear as a subsection or as a selectable category).
- If you can’t find albums where you expect, open Search and try filtering terms like the album name (if applicable) or a trip/location keyword.
- To browse naturally, use the Photos feed and scroll by date.
How Collections works in the new layout
Collections is designed to group photos into sets that feel more memory-like than “folders.” Depending on what Google Photos detects, you may see groupings generated from your library activity.
Think of Collections as a front door. When you need certainty, Search and manual albums still matter.
Common Collection types you’ll run into
- Time-based sets: things like recent highlights or seasonal groupings.
- People-based groupings: Photos that are associated with faces or recognized people (availability depends on your settings and region).
- Trip-like groupings: clusters based on location and date proximity.
- Highlights: curated “best of” sets based on engagement and content.
How it differs from traditional albums
Manual albums are the sets you created (e.g., “Summer 2022—Road Trip”). Collections can surface automatically generated or hybrid groupings that aren’t necessarily the same as your custom albums.

Manage Collections: what you can control
You can’t assume every Collection is editable. But you can manage the underlying settings that affect what Google Photos groups and surfaces.
Turn features on/off that affect Collections
Look for settings related to suggestions and organization. The exact labels can vary by app version, but you’ll generally find them under your profile menu.
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile icon (often top-right).
- Go to Photos settings or Settings.
- Check toggles that relate to people, memories, or recommendations. Revisit Collections after changing settings to see updated results.
Adjust what shows up (and what can’t be edited)
Common gotcha: you might be able to hide or remove items from certain groupings, but you won’t necessarily be able to fully rewrite automatic Collections the way you can with an album.

- Ensure your device is signed into the correct Google account.
- Check photo backup status (missing uploads can lead to missing Collections).
- Verify people/face settings if you expect people-based groupings.
Collections, albums, and search: best way to locate specific memories
Google Photos gives you three different ways to find content: Collections (thematic), albums (curated), and Search (keyword/location/person). The fastest workflow is knowing when to use each.
Use Search for fast targeting
Search is still the most reliable path when UI changes make browsing feel slower. Try typing names, places, or even events you know were recognized.

- Examples: “Eiffel Tower,” “Hawaii,” a person’s name, or “2023 wedding.”
- For visual matches, Search may show suggested categories—choose the relevant chip or result.
Use date and location cues
If you remember roughly when something happened, use date-based browsing in the main Photos feed. Collections may group by time, but Search is better when you’re sure of keywords or locations.
Know what Search can and can’t find
- Search works best for recognizable tags: places, people (if enabled), and common objects/events.
- If you uploaded photos long ago or from another device that wasn’t properly backed up, Search may not include everything until backup completes.
Troubleshooting when Collections look wrong or are missing
UI rollouts can create “phantom problems” that are really sync or account issues. Use these checks in order.
Collections not showing at all
If you don’t see Collections where expected:
- Update Google Photos to the latest version from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
- Confirm you’re signed into the right Google account in Google Photos settings.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Check for a pending network connection issue; Collections and indexing may take time after connection resumes.
Collections show fewer items than expected
When Collections appear incomplete, the most common reasons are delayed backup or feature settings.
- Backup not finished: open settings and look for backup status. Let it finish on Wi-Fi.
- Content filtering: people/memories settings may reduce what’s grouped.
- Indexing lag: after large uploads, wait several hours (not minutes) for organization to catch up.
Images moved or archived behavior seems off
Another frequent “gotcha” is confusing Collections grouping with the archival state. Collections may surface content that’s categorized, but archive/unarchive behavior follows your archive controls—not just what Collections shows.
If you can’t find a photo:
- Search for it by date or keyword.
- Check archive-related areas via Settings or the relevant menu entry for archive (labeling may vary).
- Look at the photo’s state indicators (if shown) and whether backup is complete.
App keeps reverting to an older layout
Some devices toggle features at different times. If you keep seeing different layouts:
- Leave the app updated and avoid downgrading.
- Sign out/in only if needed (signing out can delay re-indexing).
- Be patient: server-side experiments can update gradually over days.
Privacy and sharing changes to watch for
Collections can change how you discover content, which can indirectly affect sharing. If you share albums or collections externally, confirm what you’re actually sharing.

- If you share a link, make sure it points to a manual album if that’s what you intended.
- Review sharing permissions inside shared items. UI labels can shift, but privacy boundaries should remain tied to the actual shared object.
If something is shared unintentionally after the redesign, remove access from the shared item, then verify visibility on another device.
Comparison: old Library tab workflow vs the new Collections workflow
| Task | Old approach (Library tab) | New approach (Collections redesign) |
|---|---|---|
| Browse themed groupings | Limited: often relied on albums or search | Start with Collections for memory-style groupings |
| Find a specific trip | Library → Albums (if you created one) or Search | Collections for discovery, then Search for precision |
| Open a manual album | Library → Albums | Collections → Albums subsection (or internal navigation) |
| Organize and curate | Manual album management in Library | Manual album management still exists; accessed from within Collections |
FAQ
Did my albums disappear when Library was replaced?
No. Your manual albums aren’t supposed to vanish. You may need to open them from inside Collections, or you can use Search to locate the album content by keywords and dates.
Why do some Collections not include all my photos from a date or trip?
Collections may be generated automatically and can lag behind backup or indexing. Also, some groupings may be “highlights” or curated sets rather than a complete archive of everything shot during that trip.
Can I edit a Collection like I edit an album?
Often, you can’t fully edit an automatic Collection the same way you can with a manual album. If you need full control, create or use a manual album for that purpose.
Is this change permanent, or will Library come back?
Rollouts are typically progressive and server-side. If you want the most stable workflow, rely on Search and manual albums even if the navigation hub changes.
How do I report a bug with the Collections redesign?
Use the in-app feedback or help option from your profile menu. Include your device model, app version, and what you expected to see versus what you got.
Bottom Line
Google Photos is moving your default entry point from Library to a Collections-first experience. The change is mostly about navigation and discovery, not about deleting your content.
Recommended Free Tools
If you can’t find albums or your expected groupings, use Search and check backup status, then revisit Collections after indexing finishes. With that workflow, the redesign becomes a net improvement rather than a daily annoyance.
